Don’t forget to factor the other costs like running gas line if you need and replacing the landscaping that gets torn up. Our pavers came in today so pool should be finished in the next 3-4 weeks.

Had a pool designer over to look at our project today and they recommended Ozone over Salt. Anyone have thoughts?

Assuming we officially enter a recession before the end of the year, what do we think will happen to pool construction prices? Wife is concerned about buying at the absolute high point right now and then the market cratering in six months. My retort is we live in an affluent area that’s not likely to be impacted by normal market conditions all that much. I can’t imagine demand drops all that much here and vendors have always upcharged here because of our zip code. Thoughts?

I’ve gone through this scenario in my head multiple times after we started the process. I honestly don’t know what I would do if I was at the beginning. I’d say I would be 75% holding off to see what happens and the other part pulling the trigger. If it was just me I would hold off but the wife and kids wanted it badly. It’s going to be great once done and we’ll enjoy the hell out of it but I would have loved to see the money stay in the bank account for the time being.

We had a pool growing up but my wife didnt so back in 2014 when we were looking for our first house she was adamant she wanted one. There were a few houses we liked that didnt have one and we said we could put one in and our realtor discouraged it saying even if only costs $50-$60K it doesnt immediately add that same value to the office like updating the kitchen or bathrooms would. We ended up buying a home that had a pool but I think it would be cool to put one in and design it to your liking.

Totally valid and part of me agrees with you. Another part isn’t so sure things are going to change that drastically here. And then another part is full-on:

Exactly. Our last Westchase house had one, but it was a very basic late 90s pool. The idea of starting from scratch and designing exactly what we want is exciting.

I think Ozone is an add-on to salt water pools? I have heard good things.

Ozone is a secondary sanitizer. It neither takes the place of salt generated chlorine, liquid chlorine, or tablets.

I would get a true UV sanitizer as a secondary sanitizer over ozone.

Imo the demand for pools is so high right now that the only people buying them are the people who are pretty recession proof. Maybe prices level off a little bit, but I think pool prices have found a new permanent floor.

Writing checks will be painful. One afternoon when you’re sitting out there and look around at kids/family/friends/pets enjoying it you’ll say “this is why I built it”. You’ll never financially justify it. You’re buying time and memories. Don’t let money ruin that for you. The build will have issues. Every construction project does. Just roll with it and try to enjoy the process.

any idea what the remedy is for my salt cell? I have the chlorine output set at 90% on the Pentair app, but on the physical system it reads 0 and won't let me manually increase it. push the button, nothing happens. It's 6 months old.

is it still generating chlorine? Could it be simply that display lights have burnt out?

I will be home after a bit and look into it.

No. it's not generating anything. When I test the water it shows no chlorine. I'm having to super shock the pool every few days to keep the algae at bay.

Watching the hole collapse during a heavy rain was the most stressful part of our build. Well that and the digger severing the neighborhood electrical line because the power company did such a terrible job marking it (they were at least 10 ft off).

That looks nothing like my Pentair Intellichlor IC60, otherwise I would try to help. Very weird that manually pushing the button does nothing.

edit: only thought is that the temperature sensor went bad and so it’s keeping it off because it thinks the temp is too high. You can run a diagnostic mode to check for that but I’m too drunk to explain right now

Zack Zedalis a.tramp thank you both for your service. Been a really informative read from the start.

Zack Zedalis saw you giving some recs for contractors outside of your area. We’re a couple miles down the road from poetictrojan and saw your San Luis Obispo rec, but my wife swears that hiring someone out of Bakersfield is the go to move based on combing through NextDoor and Facebook for the past few days. Know anyone out there by chance?

Anyone have any experience with retractable outdoor screens? My neighborhood has an awful mosquito problem and I'd like to be able to screen my patio for evenings but the get in cost is pretty high. Anyone with them think they are worth it?
