I can name about 10 other rejects that we can take off our 40 man roster, and none of them would get claimed. That’s what years and years of bad drafting does.
1. Barbato 2. Chad Bell 3. Carpenter 4. Sandy Baez 5. Victor Reyes 6. Artie Lewicki 7. Reininger 8. Saupold 9. Turnbull 10. Moreno
There's no point in calling Stewart up right now. If he continues to hit like this in Toledo for another month and forces them to call him up, do it. There's no point in calling him up to a roster that has Castellanos and VMart on it already.
So matt manning sucks, huh? 3rd year in pro ball, still in low A, can't throw strikes. Great draft pick
From ESPN We're 32 days away from the 2018 Rule 4 draft, which means it's really still too early for a first-round projection, but I can't procrastinate too much longer on this. Please remember that this is not a ranking of player abilities or values (here is my most recent ranking of the players in this class), but a best guess as to which player each team might take in this scenario, based on the best information I could glean from industry sources right now. 1. Detroit Tigers: Casey Mize, RHP, Auburn. It is entirely possible the Tigers don't take Mize, cutting a deal with someone else, but at this point there's no real indication they're taking someone else. Imagine if the Tigers could trade this pick to a team in contention right now, though, given how advanced Mize is and the possibility he could work out of an MLB bullpen in September and October.
As much as this scares me, I'm starting to go to Vinegar Strokes side on Victor Reyes. What the hell is the point of keeping him on the roster if you're going to play freaking Niko Goodrum over him when injuries occur? I don't now if he has any chance of being good or not, but giving him 2 at bats per week isn't going to be the way you find that out. At this point it's just a waste of a roster spot. Also, they're mad about the play of their middle infield so they call up Kozma, who is hitting at the exact same level in AAA that Machado and Iglesias are hitting in the big leagues. What the fuck?
Not that it matters cause this team isn't trying to compete, but with the competence Jones and McCann have shown this year vs righties, a healthy lineup of that starts Martin, Candy, Miggy, Casty, VMart, Jones & McCann looks surprisingly ok. Would love to just send VMart out to pasture and stick Stewart in there as the DH eventually...
What’s everyone’s thoughts on Mize. I keep going back and forth, but I hope they go with a bat instead.
Ask the Cubs and Astros that. Draft is important. Lot of people think Mize doesn’t have ace stuff. That’s not type of kid you want at 1-1
If Mize isn't what you want at 1-1, no one else in this draft is even close. Who would you take at #1? Some people don't think Mize is an ace (Kiley McDaniel seems to be one of them). Other people think he is (Keith Law is one of them). Everyone agrees that he's the best player in the draft at this point. I haven't read a single person even suggest someone is even on a similar level as him. I wouldn't be mad if they took a bat at a discount, but the options there are what? I would be shocked if Madrigal is even a consideration. The only other choices are Bohm and Joey Bart, a catcher from Georgia Tech.
Also have to consider that we're probably not going to have great oversign options in the second and third rounds because of how many picks teams like Tampa and KC have in that range. KC is going to be able to do just about anything it wants.
Getting the draft right is important, sure, but the #1 overall pick doesn't have anywhere near the value it does in other pro sports. Your future MVP can just as well be a kid signed as a 16 year old out of the DR
You can't miss on the #1 overall pick. Mize scares me because of the injury risk of pitchers in general, but there's risk no matter who they take in this draft. The college bats aren't good, and most of the talent HS bats are from cold weather states and don't have much track record.
Sure, but Houston also tanked for years and took Correa, Bregman, several top prospects, and developed the hell out of players like Altuve, Keuchel and others. I don't think Houston's path to success through those failures is really hard.
Well that's kind of what I'm getting at. Yeah don't blow the pick but when building a farm system that can win titles down the road it's not all gonna come down to what you pick in the amateur draft. Trades and intl signings will have to be on point too ... Take Mize if he's the best player. Just dunno how much we need to focus on the draft as fans ...
The draft is important for anyone, but especially when you're a rebuilding team in an era where it's harder than ever to make the kinds of trades that kick start your system. I've always cared a lot about the draft because I like drafts and I think they're interesting to follow. I care more about this one because a) we have the #1 pick; and b) our big league team sucks and I need to follow something.
I hear that but ts hard to get wrapped up with being #1 when all these picks are still years away I guess. Just here for the Emily Waldon updates
I haven't seen the surgery part. Would be a bummer if he needs it. Lugo coming up makes sense. Hopefully he hits well enough to get a look at 2B whenever Candelario can come back.
He has 1 walk in 150 at bats in Toledo. He fucking sucks. MLB pitchers will eat him alive. Give me machado any day over that turd.
Its odd, I see lots of quotes about playing through pain and stuff, but it's also an issue he's been dealing with since his days with the Cubs. Sounds like there's one lil nerve deep under a lot of other tissue that they may want to correct, but it's a complicated procedure that will take a lengthy rehab since they have to cut up so much other stuff ...
Let him play through June, then shut him down for season. Sounds like guys who have had similar surgery in off season are not ready for spring training. Probably a 3-4 month recovery.
Nice park you have here. Was in town for work so decided to catch a game. Can't beat being 19 rows behind the dugout for $13.
