Go mesh WiFi. People have mentioned it a lot in this thread. I finally made the switch last week and it’s been fantastic. My man cave would be lucky to keep a steady 25 mpbs, but the line in always tested at 350+. Now i easily get over 200 Mbps in that room and almost 300 in all other parts of house over the WiFi

I’ll try that next, TSP too. To my amazement muriatic acid did nothing. I even tried it undiluted on one stone to no affect.

Honest question, why? Does your fridge ice maker not make enough ice? Seems kind of annoying that you'd have to run a water line to this machine on the counter or constantly refill it with water

you wouldn't use a second modem, but you are probably meaning router and/or extender. You're probably better off using a mesh system.

Movers estimated 3 movers for 11 hours, were done in 8 hours, so no money out of pocket for us (builder paid for first 8 hours)

we have the dreaded Samsung French door fridge and had someone out about 8 different times to “fix” the ice maker. Last guy finally did but it has been almost two years since then and it is acting up again. We are well past the extended warranty I purchased and Best Buy isn’t coming out to fix stuff right now even though we pay out of our own pocket, if they even do that. I tried calling twice and the automated system transferred me to Samsung and fuck that.

Plus, in the few times a year we have family and/or friends over, the fridge ice maker can’t keep up. My wife stays home with the kids so she’s using it all day also. It isn’t a necessity but I’m willing to give it a shot.

An angle grinder with a wire brush will be much more effective than a wire brush on a drill. If that is the only thing that will work this will at least speed the process up. Go to harbor freight and buy an angle grinder for $20 and then get this brush that looks like this. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-4-in-Crimped-Wire-Wheel-Brush-48-52-5070/100015130

Either way that job is going to suck.

Getting this put on my outside electrical box.Allows me to hook my generator up to my entire house with a single easy step if the power goes out during hurricane season. Highly recommend it for everyone that is in hurricane territory.

Do newer fridge ice makers use filtered water? I started using old school ice trays so I could use filtered water for cocktail ice cubes cause my fridge ice tastes like shit.

Lets say you bought a new house....would you expect all the coaxial wall plates to be hooked up with the wires coming into the house? Also, would you expect the smart panel to connect the inside wires to the outside wires???

That was my internet problem. Nothing at all was hooked up. The outside wires fed into the smart panel, two wires, but the 7 wires into the house weren't hooked up. Then each of the 7 wall plates had nothing hooked up to them. They were just screwed into the housing and the wires dangling behind the cover.

I've never bought a house, but it seems like this should be hooked up. Maybe it's left on the new homeowner b/c there was both a DSL line and a cable line. I'm trying to word an email to the builder and not have it sound like I don't know the expectation...

I always assumed that the fridge filter was for ice also, but perhaps that is dumb in my part to make that assumption

I can see both sides, but why would the builder put coaxial jacks in the wall, if the weren't running wiring for it? Why waste your time cutting out holes in the wall and putting in jacks if you aren't putting the system behind it (even if there is no service/provider on it). I see it similar to a home telephone line with wall jacks, but no telephone line run to the actual jack.

I would have to guess you might get an apology or something, but what would they do materially to reconcile? Come back and run the cable drops? Did you hire someone to do that or are they still unconnected?

Obviously anything from a service providers tower/node to the outside of the house is outside of the scope, but I think you might be onto something.

So all the wires have been ran. Two inside to the smart panel, then 7 wires from the smart panel to the wall plates. Just nothing anywhere was connected.

So, let's say I didn't cut the cord/cable and had normal cord TV...for ever coaxial jack I'd have to manually connect it to the wall plate and then connect it in the smart panel.

I feel like the wires should be connected to the wall plates. :idk:

Yeah, this is a new house and the builder should have asked you what you planned to use and connected the wires. Fair expectation imo.

That was my take. Builder said it was for extra room for additional wires. That makes no sense.

I don't need them so whatever. Seems a little lazy

I actually somewhat thought about that. Put a switch/modem and run cat6 cables... But how do you feed the cable? It's not in a pipe or channel behind the dry wall, right?

Seems like it would be super difficult.

It might be to do yourself. Moderately I guess, depends on your familiarity with cabling but yes the cables need to be run (read: installed).

I paid a handyman roughly $300 to do it. He ran the cable underneath the house via the crawl space and did the drops (which includes cutting out holes/installing boxes/connecting jacks). Add maybe $250 more in supplies and I have 2 live ethernet jacks in every room that matters. I've posted the full details (ITT?) as it was part of my outfitting of my new house, and the way I did it really future proofed the house. Maybe in 10 years wifi is strong enough, but I haven't seen anything in the last 10 years to suggest the decision wasn't a no-brainer.

There are plenty of youtube videos showing how to do it....https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=how+to+install+ethernet+cable+in+house

For some people, a mesh wifi system will absoltuely be fine.

Just using one of the National guys, but I’m getting a new home in Downtown Columbus with everything I wanted except a garage rooftop space. Their floor plan options just happened to be what we wanted for urban living. We still got to pick and design everything but the floor plans were somewhat limited. It was mostly 3-5 bedroom/bathroom layouts, home office choice, and different fireplace/bar combos. I

I think in 5 years when we bolt to the suburbs I’ll use a true custom home builder, I have no interest in renovations

So I have no crawl space or attic. The wires are all currently run behind dry wall and in the floors. Seems like a messy job.

Yeah, I'd love a gig up and down. But with no mesh and the wifi on the bottom level. I'm still getting 200mbs on the third floor. Good enough for streaming needs
