No blue bloods went after Christopher hard either because they thought it'd be a circus and he'd end up at asu with his brother. Christopehrs brother had no other d1 offers and Asu took him to specifically get Josh Christopher. Juwan got played and in turn all the um media got played. This is why Beilein said fuck it post 2016 and stopped recruiting 5 stars. I thought juwan could get um back to 80s and 90s style um recruiting but he needs to focus on the 30-100 range instead.

Did Sam Webb fly out to California just for this announcement? Hope he got some good 9700 word deep dive interviews from second uncle Laron about Josh Christopher's vigorous love of academics and the lord and savior Jesus Christ!!

Eh, Howard didn’t really have many options. 12 months ago he wasn’t even thinking about being a college coach. By the time he took the job, 75% of the top 100 kids were committed. In the future he certainly needs to be more selective with what high level guys to get involved with, but I don’t think he got “duped.” He made the best of who was available and it ultimately didn’t work out. I don’t blame him for trying.

He brought in the highest rated B10 class this year with less than a full year on the job, and got a grad transfer PG that was widely considered one of the best transfer guards in the country. I don’t think many people are worried about his recruiting.

Auburn didn’t even attempt to get in with Todd and Christopher. Bruce was focused on bigger fish in Greg Brown and Jalen Green. Come Friday this will be better than the Oden and Conley OSU class. War Darn Eagle!

I don't follow recruiting but i assume florida state is going to sign a bunch of 7ft athletes who can't play basketball but excel at turning the game into a miserable unwatchable slog that they win 75% of the time.

Would be stupid to go to college then. You know the G League team is going to giving him a large role even if he isn’t prepared for it due to that kind of salary.

College basketball is going to be in trouble if the G League and international pro league last start tossing out $100,000+ salaries to kids straight out of high school on a regular basis.

I wouldn’t say it’s a regular basis if it’s less than a handful of guys every year. I’m talking like a majority of the five-star type guys going pro.

I'm guessing there are already offers out there for a lot of these guys who still choose college.

The more interesting question to me is whether international teams keep offering that kind of money to 18 year old American kids based on the returns they've gotten so far. Ball played 12 games and basically quit after an injury at the end of November. Hampton played 15 games (four after November). Ferguson was bad in his year in Australia. Jennings was the first one a while back in Europe and had a rough year. If that stuff doesn't start to change, I wonder if those leagues are going to keep putting up that kind of money.

Am I missing an American HS player who went overseas and was a success? Those were just the guys I could think of off the top of my head. I think the G League putting up that money is different, but I'm not sure how much the G League wants to be in that business.

Well Hampton also got injured. Two guys getting injured isn’t exactly indicative of all players fresh out of HS. And LaMelo Ball increased his draft stock, so he must have been doing something right on the court.

And the G League is an official minor league for the NBA. It is their business to do stuff like this.

They both got injured, but neither ever really came back. Hampton came back for three games and then left to get ready for the draft. Ball never came back. That's always going to be an issue if you're signing players to big money who are only there to get bigger NBA paydays. I guess that's my part of my point, even if I explained it poorly.

I don't really know how the G League works with this stuff, so maybe this is well known, but who pays the salaries for these guys if they're playing there? Does the league have a fund to do that with HS kids? That would make sense and create more chances, because I don't see individual teams wanting to pony up that much for a HS kid when they're trying to develop their own young players at the same time.

any Updates on real sport recruiting that Kentucky unc Duke Kansas and Arizona state don’t dominate? At least UCLA has chip kelly and his state of the science nutrition program please be respectful of that Lmao wow he doesn’t have the infrastructure of mike cronin’s Bruin juggernaut!

Lot of patience is needed in this thread Nick Cronin and chip kelley are building UCLA the right way through relationships and family feel recruiting! throwing litecoin into josh rosens hedgefund like Pepperdine did is shameful, insulting, and contrary to David Shaw’s physical gold iras across the southeastern United States

One and done rule changed the dynamics.

If HS players could go pro then it would probably change how all of these things are playing out. It would force kids to go pro or go to college. You wouldn't have kids weighing options to go G League or to a foreign league like Australia or Europe.

Fwiw Kansas isnt going to dominate recruiting anytime soon. They signed one hs bluechip whose dad played for Self, one supposedly decent juco who is from KC & a couple of projects.

Nobody they signed is going to replace Doke or Dotson.

What does a G League team gain by paying a teenager $500K for one year?

Nba owners desperately want to make the g league a profitable venture. I believe the hope is getting top high schoolers will draw eyeballs and coverage. Imo it’s a big time long shot but it seems like the g league is trying.

its all just preliminary stuff for when they get rid of one and done, do the double draft and the g league reaches its complete form as a minor league

and most owners are gonna be fine shelling out 500k to get some publicity and be seen as player friendly to those seeking that option in the meantime

No maybe there may be a select few but the vast majority of these owners are not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts to be seen as good guys/player friendly. They are pushing for it because they have invested millions in the g league and want to see a return on their investment.

I don't think paying that kind of money for a potential high draft pick makes sense for NBA teams who own G League teams. Seems like you wouldn't want someone you can't bring to your main roster getting that kind of money and role on your developmental team. You'd rather have those spots available to your young NBA talent you control to go down and get opportunities.

I do agree with the second post, though, that all of this becomes far more viable as a strategy if/when one-and-done gets lifted. At that point, you can sign these kids to developmental deals after the draft and there is actually upside to it from the team's end.

Are you sure G League teams are even owned by NBA owners? Pretty sure they are completely separate franchises.

They’re pretty much all owned by the teams at this point. I think the rockets and pistons affiliates are the only ones that aren’t officially owned by the team.

I’ve heard agents say in the past they would never advise a high school player to go to the G League before the draft.

That league is full of grown men fighting to make a living. Have to think a high school kid bringing media attention and making 10x their salaries would get targeted and abused every night. They don’t send high school baseball players to AAA.

Well the G League is quite a few steps down from a significant # of international pro leagues. I’d imagine AAA baseball is probably a pretty high level relative to the rest of the international baseball market but I admittedly pay very little attention to baseball these days.

I think the G League was a step down from the best international leagues 5+ years ago. I'm not sure that's the case anymore. It's a legit minor league system at this point. Not only are guys on NBA rosters playing there every night, but I think the 2-way contract thing has also changed a lot. Every team gets 2 of them, I believe, and that keeps some of the undrafted guys who would have chosen to play in Europe 5 years ago in the US.

Agree, top European leagues have better teams because theres way more continuity of the rosters. However, the g league has a deeper amount of talent than top European leagues.
