No. You learn more about Burn in the prequel trilogies though so I may be biased. But I don’t recall being disappointed. What reveal are you discussing and want disappointed you?
Some discussion here, but still not clear to me either https://www.tor.com/2014/04/16/malazan-reread-of-the-fallen-dust-of-dreams-chapter-eighteen/
The picture of Burn in my head was just completely different, wasn’t expecting her to be /species/race that she was. I also guess I stupidly associated her with being “good” since the crippled god is “bad” and they seem to be in opposition, but that’s just lazy, dumb thinking by me given how all the gods minus Mael act once actually present in the story. She’s just really shitty and I guess I expected her to be some grand, benevolent deity
I don't really remember Burn doing anything in the main series. Other than just being there at the end of Memories of Ice.
Spoiler: through chapter 19 Draconus and Ublala Pung as bff’s? Yes please. Also the fact that he can just randomly add characters like the new female Atri-Ceda in the end of the 9th book and make her a valuable character to help move plots forward is just awesome writing skills. Also, was not expecting the 3 Dal Honese women to be the main characters to explain the entire Malazan/Tavore plot thread to us. That was also an amazing use of minor characters.
Finished. Not as good as most of the other books in the series, too many loose ends and we didn't get the convergence of all the parties yet. I understand it's because it's not technically a stand alone book, more comments in the spoiler. But those 2 battles. Good lord, those were excellent. a lot more thoughts about this book as a whole: Spoiler So, I get that this isn't a full "book" by itself, merely a halftime until the Cripple God book finishes all the plot lines. However, I was a little disappointed that the "big bad guys" really didn't even come in the book until 92% of the book. Like, We saw the word Nah'ruk only once in the entire book when the K'Chain Che'Malle Destriant and her guardians were fleeing from an unnamed adversary, and then again once the 14 Jaghut came out to battle with them. Suddenly they randomly pop out of a warren and destroy the Bonehunters? A little disappointing, if you ask me. He foreshadowed something terrible was going to happen the farther east they went, but he kept foreshadowing a betrayal and kept intimating that the Bolkando/Perish were in danger as well, and yet the warren and Nah'ruk didn't even affect them at all. Maybe book 10 will solve some of Book 9's problems, but I thought this was one of the weaker overall books in the series. I gave it a 7/10. Once I know how Book 10 ends, I'll probably revise the score as I'm sure it will fix some of the book's issues, and clear up some of my misunderstandings about what's going on. Also, I'll be REALLY disappointed if that's how Icarium's story ends. Based on that ending, if he's not in Book 10, I'll be pretty upset.
I still have no idea wtf is going on with this Icarium/Tarlack shit Spoiler Didnt Tarlack get his head caved in by debris at the end of Reaper’s?
Wanted to reply “yeah that minor little detail” but in the course of 10 1200 page books as fucking complicated and convoluted as this series is, I miss and forget stuff all the time. I didn’t even realize 2 characters were Elder gods at one point.
I’m 50 pages into Crippled God. I feel like Erikson is gonna have to either start wrapping up a billion plot threads or start murdering off everyone, either way I’m game.
There are threads that will be left hanging. Remember this is just one series that takes place in the universe. Some threads will be continued in Esselmont's Novels of the Malazan Empire and in future Erikson books. He has begun work on a new trilogy and has published 2/3 books on a prequel trilogy. Hell, they killed off a very powerful player already in one of Esselmont's books, so obviously everything isn't going to occur within the 10 book Book of the Fallen.
I’ll say this if anything happens to Spoiler Fiddler I will stop reading at that point and leave this unfinished
I feel like all these little parts of members of the Bonehunters having doubts and getting all nostalgic is a set up for them getting fucking massacred and I am scared
Over 10000 pages of Erikson read, you should know better than to assume it’s all action. But there is a lot.
Draconus is fucking badass 180 pages in or so Spoiler he’s the fucking smoke monster from Lost! Also JADE FUCKING GIANTS? Those are definitely otataral right? I think we know that by now.
Motherfucking Stormrider. I think based on all the shit about him earlier, just before shit starts going down, he's actually an elder god. Complete speculation, but him and Draconus have beef and so I think he's an elder god we haven't been told about yet.
Ok so I’m really hoping Spoiler Icarium creating an Azath house in the Wastelands means an easy way for Kalam to show up and join the bonehunters Otherwise I’m gonna be mad
