Had no idea Ridley Scott purchased the film privileges for this series.... Not sure what kind of movie these books would make, seems more like a mini series or full out TV series. However; I love Ridley Scott, so this is awesome news.
Finished Book 3 Spoiler Juliette is a boss. Figured she would and was glad that she did put two and two together and figured out that was she was seeing wasn't real. I'm not sure why LKRFN88jp thinks she is still alive though, I just figured that she made it over the hill before she died since she had more time since she didn't clean. I think Bernard is afraid tht people will come to see the sunrise and notice that Juliette didn't clean and then not be able to see her body and figure that she got away alive which could lead to another uprising when in actuality she just died over the hill. Could be wrong but thats my thought after just finishing Book 3
Just finished Book 3. Spoiler There are fucking other silos. Oh shit... I really believed that THIS silo housed the only people left on the planet, save maybe some renegade groups roaming the outside. And I am still holding out hope that Jules made it somewhere and is still alive. Howey is almost as bad as GRRM at killing motherfuckers. I think the poison was meant for Jahns as well. The Pact made Bernard the Mayor and the head of IT if the Mayor died. That is a pretty fucking powerful position. And I think Marnes did kill himself. Dude was heartbroken.
Finished this morning Spoiler I really liked it, but for some reason I was kind of bummed there was a complete happy ending. Lukas and Juliette survive/end up together. Bernard died. Solo ended up being ok. Not that I wanted a total :( ending, but didn't really love that everything ended up being ok. Still liked it though. Am excited for book 6/prequel, because this world is so interesting. Thought it was cool that Lukas figured it all out when talking it through. Edit: Didn't know book 6 was out. Need to find a copy of it. Was a fun and easy read, especially coming on the heels of the ASOIAF series. Of the book club books I've read though, I'd go Ready Player One 11/22/63 Wool Though the first two are pretty much 1a/1b for me.
Finished the book last night Spoiler I was 99% sure it was going to be Bernard in the airlock with Jules because of the way Lukas's last chapter ended with Billings starting to change his mind. I didn't think it would end like that without some sort of twist. Was 100% sure when Bernard started freaking out and then 1000% sure when she commented on his small hands. I think he knew that it would be impossible to make it all the way to silo 17 and get inside and get the helmet off and safe without being too contaminated by the rapidly deteriorating heat tape (I don't think the cleaning takes very long). Figured he thinks the fire would be the fastest death. Silo 1 is very interesting to me as well. Sounds like they are in charge or at least that's where the upper upper level officials of the 50 silo project are housed. The red x is put there when a silo uprising leads to the death of basically everyone in it, or at least thats how I took it. They have radio contact between the silos and it seems like Silo 1 has a pretty good idea of whats going on in each of the Silos (the man on the radio telling Lukas to spend less time looking at the starts etc...) so I think they have a good idea when an uprising like what happened in 17. I think it said the Silo cluster Juliette is in is located where Atlanta used to be (Atlanta probably being the city they can see over the hill). And since they caused it, I think it is likely they are the only humans left, but who knows.
Spoiler I was too. Its not like everything was all happy though, Howey was killing off motherfuckers right and left. I wanted more out of it in regards to whats going on in other silos, rest of the world etc... but he is writing more books. Read a couple of reviews of part 6 that said it wasn't as good as 1-5 and it also wasn't about Juliette and them, possible a prequel. http://www.amazon.com/First-Shift-L...F8&qid=1350323986&sr=8-2&keywords=wool+part+6 (only 3.99 for a kindle. Will probably just buy it.)
Just finished Book 4 and I have to say, fucking love the way every book ends with a hard hitting, slap in the face revalation, a didn't-see-that-coming twist or a kickass bold statement like Book 4. Will probably finish this tonight here at work.Very, very enjoyable book.
Its kind of a gimmicky literary device but I enjoy it. GRRM does it a lot as well as I'm sure you know. edit: I guess there's a fine line between gimmicky and a well done cliffhanger, I have to remember that each "book" is a short story (or more of a novella for the later ones I guess) so they're more like cliffhangers. GRRM does it at the end of every chapter where it becomes a little gimmicky JMO
I just finished book 4 and am hoping to finish the entire thing within a week. If I had to get nitpicky about the book, it would be that the characters seem very cliche. What I enjoyed about GRRM is the level of complexity you get in his character development. It is unfair because all these books are shorter stories and don't leave a lot of room for deep character development, but still, I am never surprised by the actions of any of the characters.
Finished the book tonight. Spoiler My first tMB Book Club participation. I thought this was awesome. Had me flipping pages just like another of my favorite post-apocalyptic novels, The Road. I loved the backstory and the world the author created. Best part of the whole book was the interaction with Lukas, Bernard and the voice from Silo 1. I loved how there was this good/evil grey area with the 'bad guy' in Bernard. It was obvious he firmly believed that what he was doing was the right thing to do, and that he was safeguarding the lives of many people by handling it that way. You could therefore make a read of it that he wasn't 'evil' in the traditional sense of the word. They kept coming back to the "we don't control the past, we only control the future" argument to justify his actions, which was spot on. I jumped right into Book 6. Looking forward to finding out how all this shit goes down.
Finished it. Spoiler Give it a 67/100. It was really good in the beginning, but leveled off to 'decent' and stayed there. The happy ending has already been discussed, but I agree. Seemed contrived and slightly out of place in the story. Also, Juliette seemed sooo concerned about those kids in Silo 17, then just left them and seemingly forgot about them. At the end, she wants to go see her dad? Odd that that is where her loyalty lies. And I really want to know about the world. What happened? How did one silo destroy the other (the part that we knew it was coming because we did it) or am I just dumb? I'd recommend it, but behind other books. Glad I read it. Send suggestions for next month. Right now, I only have one.
Spoiler I think she was still in contact with them based on what was said in the "epilogue" by Solo. I bet they are devising a way to get them to silo 18. I agree with you that the book trailed towards the end. Overall was good not great, was an enjoyable read though Trying to think of some good suggestions, my expertise is in fantasy, but I feel like that would turn a lot of people off I'll throw out a fantasy suggestion if I can't think of anything else.
Spoiler Completely agree about the grey area of Bernard. I couldn't help but find some sense in some of the things he was saying, but overall it was too deceitful and inhumane to be justified
Fuck, dude. Even if they turn some folks off, I'd love to get your recommendations. I'm a huge fantasy geek myself.
The other problem with fantasy is that most of the books are part of a series. I guess we could read the first in a series and then everyone can decide if they want to finish it on their own or not
Finished yesterday Spoiler Good but not great. I thought it ran out of steam after the first few books and the ending felt rushed. I would like to know more about Silo 1 and the overall background to the disaster and organization of the silo cluster. Like I mentioned earlier, the characters felt cliche and their actions were obvious. It was a fun read, but I felt like the book lacked depth.
Spoiler I just started First Shift (aka Book 6), which addresses a lot of your concerns in the middle part of your post.
I gave 3 suggestions, 2 are the same genre I guess, and 1 is completely different than anything else we've read. All have very solid reviews.
Spoiler First shift is really depressing. About 80% through with it, can't stop reading, but man it's dystopian.
Spoiler I thought that when they said we knew it was coming because we did it was referring the 'why they are in silos to begin with' and not what one silo did to another
I need to check this sub board more often, didn't realize this was a book of the month book...Finished Book 3 last night
Skipped over everything as I haven't read the books yet, but I should get around to it in a month or so. Thought some of you would like to know about this: J. Blakeson Eyed for Wool Adaptation Source: VultureNovember 28, 2012 Vulture reports that Twentieth Century Fox Film is in talks with The Disappearance of Alice Creed writer/director J. Blakeson to take onWool, the adaptation of Hugh Howey's series of seven sci-fi novellas, the first of which is described as follows: They live beneath the earth in a prison of their own making. There is a view of the outside world, a spoiled and rotten world, their forefathers left behind. But this view fades over time, ruined by the toxic airs that kill any who brave them. So they leave it to the criminals, those who break the rules, and who are sent to cleaning. Why do they do it, these people condemned to death? Sheriff Holston has always wondered. Now he is about to find out. Ridley Scott's Scott Free is set to develop the property alongside Garrett Basch and Steve Zaillian of Film Rites.
About 30% of the way through, couple chapters into Wool 3. First part was great, second part dragged while they were going up and down, but holy shit it really picked up at the end of 2 and beginning of 3. Damn good story, Bernard is eeeevil.
Finished last week, really enjoyed the whole story, Juliette was a good character to build the second half of the book around. Look forward to reading more, it says in the post about the movie that it is a seven part novella but the omnibus only has 5 parts, has anyone read 6 & 7??
Finished today. Thought it was good, not great. Will probably check out the prequel (6 and 7) at some point. Really want to know about how everything got there, who runs it, if the whole world is the same, etc.
posting in this thread because i just finished red rising and golden sun. someone suggested Wool did yall like it?
I haven't read Red Rising and Golden Sun, but I enjoyed Wool. I think it kinda loses it's way as it goes on, but book 1 is really good.
Back in the day someone had sent me all the epubs for Shift, Wool and Dust. I lost them when my phone died last weekend, anyone still have them? I was almost done with Shift, was going to re-read Wool and then tackle Dust.
the whole series of wool is good. i can't really keep track of what i have read since i read them on my phone at work but so far what i have encountered Spoiler the sheriff goes out and thinks the world is ok but then dies, the girl takes over and then discovers that the world is actually ok after i read about the back story about why they built the silos and the senator fucks the world over and shit / Spoiler very awesome sci fi series. it would be nice if they made it into a brutal mini tv series.
So I have a trip to Pittsburgh this weekend, so lots of driving time. Just downloaded the audio book for the trip. Good choice?
Ended up doing podcasts on this trip and then started Shantaram. But picked this one up after finishing that, and really enjoying it. About 70% done now
Finished this book yesterday. Really really enjoyed it. Wish I had read this as part of the book club with you guys.
I just finished Wool Omnibus and while it wasn't a phenomenal 10/10 I really liked it. Am I correct in thinking that there are 2 more in this series? Or is it only one?
Bump because I'm finally getting around to this after finishing The Shining Girls. Got a decent amount into Part 2 this morning and I'm really liking it so far. Bummed I missed out while everyone else was reading.
Just getting around to reading Wool. Saw this from over a year ago: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’s’ Nicole Perlman to Rewrite Sci-Fi Movie ‘Wool’ for 20th Century Fox (Exclusive) The adaptation of Hugh Howey’s novel will be produced by Ridley Scott and Steve Zaillian “Guardians of the Galaxy” scribe Nicole Perlman has been hired to rewrite the sci-fi movie “Wool” for 20th Century Fox and producers Ridley Scott and Steve Zaillian, TheWrap has learned. Based on the high-concept novel by Hugh Howey, “Wool” is a futuristic tale where Earth’s air is no longer breathable and the world’s last community lives underground in a giant silo. Zaillian and Garrett Basch are producing for Film Rites, while Scott is producing via his company Scott Free. Perlman is rewriting the script by J Blakeson (“The 5th Wave”) before the producers take the project out to directors, as no one is attached at this time. “Wool” was one of Hollywood’s hottest projects when 20th Century Fox acquired the property in a heated bidding war back in 2012. The self-published e-book became a word-of-mouth sensation and sold more than 140,000 copies in under six months. Howey later wrote The Shift Trilogy, which serves as a precursor to “Wool.”
