Saw laxjoe started reading The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. Went to bump the thread and couldn't find it so I guess it was lost in the crash.

New thread for the whole series!

    1. The Lies of Locke Lamora
    2. Red Seas Under Red Skies
    3. The Republic of Thieves
    4. The Thorn of Emberlain (Expected Publication July 21st 2016)*

Scott Lynch suffers from depression and has delayed multiple books due to inability to work because of anxiety / depression. ToE was supposed to be published last year but was pushed to Summer 2016. Hopefully Scott stays healthy and the book is published on time.

Please put spoilers in spoiler tags so people reading for the first time can post their thoughts without worrying about being spoiled.

I'm a huge Lynch fan. Locke is one of my favorite characters ever. I've said multiple times on here it's my favorite series going. As soon as ToE has an official release date I'm starting a reread.

just started it today. only about 10% in, but i'm enjoying it so far. i've gotten into the habit of starting books based on recommendations and not even knowing what they are about and i did that again with this one. it's a bit dangerous, but it hasn't failed me yet. the last book i did this with was the passage and based on the first 10% plus all the reviews of the book, I have a feeling i'm going to enjoy this just as much.

Also I'm pretty sure I'm the only person around that liked RSURS the most out of the three. I'm interested in seeing if that holds up with the reread

This seems to be the most popular line of thought. Story wise it's probably the least important but it has a ton of Locke/Jean interaction.

I haven't read this series, but I know I have similar tastes to many in this thread who highly recommend it.

I should finish my current book by Friday, and will be downloading Lies immediately after.

The Thorn of Emberlain to Be Published in the UK in Fall 2016

Gollancz has posted an exciting update on its blog about Scott Lynch’s hotly anticipated fourth Gentleman Bastards book: The Thorn of Emberlain will be published in the UK sometime in September 2016, to coincide with Lynch’s UK tour and his appearance as a Guest of Honor at Fantasycon-by-the-Sea.

“England, I will see you in September,” Lynch tweeted yesterday. “Everyone else, you can have a book, too.” With previous Gentleman Bastard installments bringing Locke Lamora into the worlds of the con (The Lies of Locke Lamora), pirates (Red Seas Under Red Skies), and politics (The Republic of Thieves), now he’s going to war:

Locke Lamora, thief, con-man, pirate, political deceiver must take on his most challenging role yet as a soldier…

A new chapter for Locke and Jean and finally the war that has been brewing in the Kingdom of the Marrows flares up and threatens to capture all in its flames. And all the while Locke must try to deal with the disturbing rumours about his past that have been revealed.

Fighting a war when you don’t know the truth of right and wrong is one thing. Fighting a war when you don’t know the truth of yourself is quite another. Particularly when you’ve never been that good with a sword anyway…

You can pre-order The Thorn of Emberlain here.

    An Update from Scott Lynch
    Gollancz Author: Gollancz - August 18th, 2016
    SCOTT LYNCH, UNCATEGORIZED

    [IMG]Hello, everyone–

As you’ve probably noticed, retailers have been doing funny things with pre-orders of THE THORN OF EMBERLAIN, and the reason for that is because, despite all our hopes and the heroic patience of my publishers, we’re not going to make the expected September release date.

I am incredibly sorry about this, and I want it to be understood that there’s nobody to blame but me. In addition to the expected obstacles, I severely complicated my life this year by moving. The process of seeking a mortgage, securing a house, and moving across half a continent (although it was necessary, and has been mostly joyful) has eaten months of my time and made it very difficult to recover lost ground on several projects. Oh– Elizabeth Bear and I are getting married, too. Another real joy, but it’s eating spare time like you wouldn’t believe.

We are trying very hard to ensure none of this messes up my planned appearances for the rest of the year (I’ll still be at Worldcon, and in the UK in September, and at IceCon in October).

The release date information in retailer databases is going to do goofy things for a few weeks, because that’s just the way these things work, and there really isn’t anything we can do about it. Please ignore any date you see for the time being. Have a little patience, and we’ll and we’ll have another update soon.

    From Lynch's blog in Aug:

Now why, you may ask yourself, is a writer who’s been in a frustrating shell for a while dealing with a long-term project suddenly busting his ass to spruce up his communications, online presence, neglected responsibilities, etc. in the next month or two? Heh. Interesting question.

I love these books and while some have different opinions, I think they’re all super strong. He has talked a lot about having extreme anxiety which has impacted his writing output. Haven’t seen anything from him in a while. But the first is an all timer for me.

I’m a pretty novice fantasy reader, often find it too hard to keep track of all the weird names, places, magic systems but I’m really enjoying this. I don’t find it a hard read at all

Red Seas under Red Skies, though Part 2

Got to the part where Jean seemingly double crosses Locke. I knew it was coming because it was previewed in the prologue. Ive been keeping my eye out for why he'd do it. It really seems to come out of nowhere.

    - I dont think Jean is doing it as part of a plot w Locke to help lock sell his performance. There's no need for that

    - Only thing that makes sense is that Jean convinced by Ezri to double cross Locke. I dont think he ever would do that but if he did it still doesnt make sense.

    A) Is Zamira ordering her to fuck Locke over but why? She hates the power brokers in Tal Verar.
    B) Is Ezri double crossing Zamira? Does her noble family come into play some how?

I feel like Im missing something obvious and it's going to piss me off. Or if it's just Deus Ex machina, I'll be even more annoyed.

Cant wait to get back to this tonight.
