airline prices depend on where you're coming from, what time of year you're traveling, and how far in advance you're booking.

what do you consider 'reasonable' ?

Just played Stono Ferry yesterday, it's in great shape. Rivertowne is about an hour from Kiawah but worth it. Staying at The Sanctuary? My wife works there.

Never thought of Charleston airport as being any more expensive than the other airports in the state.

It's not. Some routes are really cheap (dc, NYC, sometimes Nashville and chicago). It's just not huge so depending on where you're coming from your route can be pricey

Hey guys. My wife is taking me to Charleston for my birthday next weekend. She booked a nice suite at the Spectator and dinner at Zero George and McCrady's Do I need to make some adjustments or did she do ok? I was born in Columbia, with family in Barnwell Co. but haven't been back in well over a decade so I don't know what it do these days. Any advice on what to hit, what to skip would be appreciated. Only in town for two nights, as we have 21-month-old identical twins. Can't leave them for very long. Preesh.

As a first time parent of a two week old, I have no idea how you handled twins. Kudos.

Wife said Zero George is supposed to be "super good", McCradys probably wouldn't be on my list of two, but you could do worse.

I think Stono is the best value in Charleston. Love playing there. It is also always the driest if rain is an issue. I also like Rivertowne but their greens are crap right now. Hopefully they will be back by the time you are here.

so using google flights -- which gives you a lot of route information, it looks like you can't fly out of birmingham cheaply to most airports. New Orleans, Nashville, Denver, etc. all $400+

and in terms of charleston, it looks like there's a lot more capacity to the northeast than to the rest of the south. ~$150 to DC vs. ~$280 to Atlanta.

Preferably lots of tvs, above average bar food, good crowd, etc.

Yeah new home team is legit. Like what they did with beer works. If it's nice weather the Carolina Ale house (yeah yeah I know) is pretty awesome with the porch upstairs and retractable roof.

So if any of you boys haven't been to Zero George yet, get thee there post haste. One of the finest meals I've ever had, and it was an abbreviated menu due to your festival. Chef Vinson Petrillo is making some magic over there. Superb cocktails as well. We plan on returning in August so we can get the whole 9 course tasting menu experience.

Here is the current menu, truly a bargain.

New York post calls oku the 18th best Japanese restaurant in America

In a classic Charleston space with exposed brick walls and high ceilings, O-Ku turns out exquisite sushi and other creative Asian fare. Two dozen kinds of raw fish grace the nigiri and sashimi menu, while rolls and other dishes offer playful flavor combinations. The potato roll is stuffed with tempura shrimp, avocado and shoestring potatoes to delightfully crunchy effect, while the Green Eggs and Hamachi Hako features spicy tuna, asparagus and wasabi tobiko (the green eggs in question). We’re not the only ones who love this place: Esquire included it in the magazine’s Best New Restaurants list in 2010, while others have called it one of the best sushi restaurants in the U.S. Don’t miss the excellent menu of sake, cocktails, and wine, either.

Long time Mount Pleasanter...since 2007...just found this thread. Home Team's brisket is not a strong suit IMO and Swig & Swine has gotten a lot better since it first opened. Lewis will dominate the barbecue scene here soon but Home Team will remain party central and damn good top to bottom. Charleston isn't really full of great barbecue anyway - you need to go north for that.

I ate at Wise Buck Smoked Meats tonight for HH - very unimpressive. Would not recommend other than the $1 Tecate.

how much does flooding/hurricane insurance run?

I know once you get more North downtown there's no required flood insurance

Mine is like 0.50% of the value of the home per year.

They are also totally separate policies. For Hurricane aka "named storm" you have a policy that is subsidized by FEMA (if I understand correctly) and then you have to purchase a flood insurance policy separately. My flood insurance is ~$500/ yr and I live backed up to the marsh.

As I understand it, it's based on your flood zone rating and the elevation of you house which is why people with houses built in the 60s (read me) pay a ton while people with new builds pay almost nothing (because they elevate as necessary).

    Hi.

Heading to Charleston July 7-10th for a bachelor party. Is there a post or something in here listing the best restaurants / drinking holes / things to do. I know we're going to hit up a few breweries, Westbrook, COAST, etc... not sure what else.

We're staying at the Historic District Embassy Suites

I was just there for the same last weekend.

Did biergarten Friday for brunch (was dead on a Friday but seems like a good spot for Sat/Sunday....good outdoor patio, good beer list). Played wild dunes (fun course, had a groupon that made it $100 total for rental clubs, 18 holes, cart, tees, and balls...spent another $40 on beers) then home team (solid BBQ and TV setup) for the nba game then stars (?) bar rooftop (fun place had a few bachelorette groups) Friday night. Saturday went to follys island and day drank at blu (hotel bar right on the beach) most of the day. Got a drink at snapper jacks (upstairs had live music and a great view right near the hotel) before leaving (should've gone to surf bar from what I understand but didn't have time). Leave for Folly's pretty early in the day imo or you'll sit in bumper to bumper traffic. Got bottles at republic sat night (ended up being 850 for 2 bottles...we had 6 guys...mainly plays club rap) and a few bachelorette groups were there that we'd met.

Sunday brunch at prohibition (I got some sort of fried chicken sandwich that was insanely good) then drank all day at reds ice house in Shem Creek upstairs (great view but not super busy on a Sunday...made friends with Kenny the bartender who bought us a few rounds of shots) before catching a late flight back. Great trip.

Star Bar, midtown (i think it's called this had a ton of girls in line but we didn't go), and republic were fun downtown. Republic was cool for bottles if you're into that. I'd say definitely go to Follys island one of the days. Didn't go to Sullivans island but I know arkadin recommended that too. Didn't do much by way of restaurants.

    That's all I've got.

Why the fuck is that place so popular? Post-nba game we were walking around downtown looking for a place to go at like 1230. The line was insanely long and filled with hot girls who weren't even going to get in before bar close.

We walked in the next day and the place is just an empty bar. Where I'm from, girls (especially hot ones) mostly refuse to wait in lines.

Its been like that since they opened it. They're slack on ids and will over serve or pour the fuck out of everyone. Most people know a bartender who works there or has a friend who does. It's cheap, they always have music. It's basically just a college bar.

There are a lot of hot girls there. It's not bottom of the barrel age wise, that's O'Malleys and the silver dollar. Midtown is a touch above that, but they're newer than both and jacked the good clientele from those two places like 8 years ago or so whenever it was they opened.

I fucking hate all three of those places lol. If I go out with some friends who are in grad school and their classmates, half the time the classmates from out of town want to go to midtown. I'm pretty easy going and I know it won't kill me, but I hate that shit every time I'm there

How in the fuck did you do that? Cassique is my favorite course ever. Caddied at both for six years. River is beautiful but exhausting. Cassique is three different "six hole courses". Links, Lowcountry (tree lined fairways), and then lots of ocean breeze on the last 6. 15 is a replica of a par 5 at Carnoustie, maybe my favorite hole in SC. We were heading out to Mingo Point for some bbq last night (go to this if you get a chance), and I commented that my wife needs to pull some strings and get me on at Cassique again. Enjoy, it's a real treat, and a no brainer over River.
