Watched the PoA movie last night and this morning. Thought it was good but not as good as the first two. First two I felt did really well by the books. PoA seemed really pared down from the books and even a bit rushed which sounds crazy for a 2.5 hour movie. They did the ending really well though. Will start reading the 4th book Mon or Tues.
It's been a while since I saw it, but I have the memory that the movie didn't explain that Harry's father was an animagus that turned into a stag and/or they didn't give credit to his crew for creating the Marauder's Map
It didn't. It really did a poor job of explaining that whole relationship between the 4, why snape hated them ect. Also did the bare minimum in laying the ground work the boys being so confused how Hermione was taking all those classes for the payoff of the time travel to be impactful. Maybe it's one of those things where if you didnt read the books, it wouldn't be a big deal. However I tend think without having the knowledge of the books, those aspects of the movie wouldn't make much sense.
Yeah the part about his father transforming into a stag is pretty important for understanding, well everything about that book.
The movies get progressively worse relative to the books. Not that the quality drops, just that the books get longer and better starting with PoA to the point where it became impossible for a 2.5 hour movie to keep up with a 900 page book (Order of the Phoenix)
I'll spoil for Truman but Spoiler Did not like how splitting up DH worked out. Thought the entire second half of DH1 kind of sucked.
Started reading TSS this weekend. On Chapter 8. Since Truman is clearly never going to read again, I will commandeer this thread and post my thoughts and discuss long running themes including lots of spoilers from all 7 books.
Been reading for a bit. Was going to wait until I stop to post them all, but here's what I got so far Goblet of Fire Chapter 1 - Had a massive brain fart and couldn't remember who Tom Riddle was. Was driving me nuts until I remembered. - "My Lord" "Wormtail" all this in the Riddle house? Now that Pettigrew has been outed, is he wormtail nursing My Lord/Voldemort back to heath?? - Sure seems like it. Not sure if Lord Voldemort speaks in the 3rd person, but we'll see. Much different start than the rest of the books. Chapter 2 - Was all that real, or just a dream?? - Fucking Dursley's. Telling everyone Harry goes away to some school for delinquents. smh - This chapter was just a recap of previous events. Hope we get some Dursley shenanigans before Harry sets off for school. Chapter 3 - heh at Dudley's fat ass having to go on a diet. - Mrs Weasley putting a million stamps on the invitation - Love the latent threats by Harry about Sirius. Well done bud. - And more time w the Weasleys. Yasssss!
Chapter 5 - The Twins' retorts to their parents are the best. - Twins creating a little black market wizard versions of Spencer's @ Hogwarts is awesome. - Man, Mrs Weasley is really worried about the twins - This Bertha chick going missing is causing quite the stir. I wonder if she was specifically selected by wormtail or just a target of opportunity. Chapter 6 -Getting a nice little education on how Wizards travel Chapter 7 - This World Cup of Quidditch is sounding like a Wizard Woodstock - Having to camp muggle style is pretty funny - LOL at the dude wanting to wear a nightgown so he gets a 'healthy breeze 'round my privates' - cool to hear about other schools in foreign countries. - pffft at the Twins going all in on this bet w Ludo. - Ludo's response when asked for news about Bertha "Not a dicky bird" . I need to start using that phrase in my daily vernacular. - Poor Percy, his idol doesnt even know his name. "Weatherby" ouch. - What's this classified information that's happening @ Hogwarts?? That's probably it for today. Might be able to sneak in a chapter or two later, but prob not. Not much of a spoiler. Common sense says things are going to escalate as the series progresses. However - I would prefer comments like this not to be made. Id rather go in with as little expectations or inferences as possible. Not trying to be a douche about it, sry.

These veelas having Harry and Ron feeling some type of way - Oh man why did Crumb get the snitch knowing they'd lose? - World Cup Quidditch games are intense - Ha forgot abou the Twins making that bet. Hope this emboldens them to keep up their hell raising. Chapter 9 - "Dont worry dad, we've got big plans for this money" -da fuck is happening. Some kind of Wizard KKK against muggles? - someone pick pocketed Harry's wand? - A little social commentary about how elves are just happier as slaves. I see you J.K. - Voldemort's Dark Mark shit is now real IanBoyd - Oh shit looks like Winky was the one that stole Harry's wand and conjured the dark mark - Why is Ludo so out of it? - Crouch getting a little too defensive for my liking. Something is up w him - Death Eaters really are like the Wizard KKK.

During my First ever read through, I finished at this point at like 2 am. 11 year old canes had nightmares of death eaters that night.
Chapter 10 - Bill telling percy to shut up was great. - Hermione still hatin on Mrs Trelawney - Dress robes... Bummer. Chapter 11 - Having to take a muggle taxi to london. #wizardworldproblems - Bill saying they're going to have an interesting year... Rules changing..Excited to see what it is! - Glad we got an explaination about how the schools and castles are hidden via bewitching. One of those questions Ive always had, but always forgot to bring up. How they're so relatively unknown to muggles. -Draco giving them shit. Is the rule change a bringing back the dualing club??? Chapter 12 - Peeves dropping water bomb as a welcome. lol - Dont see a new Dark Arts teacher. Did Snape finally get it - Heh forgot about Harry's annoying fanboy and now his little bro is in gryf too - Hermione going to go on a hunger strike for the house elves? - No Quidditch cup?!?!!? - No dark arts for Snape. This creepy Moody dude is the new teacher - TriWizard Tourney... LOL at Doubledore getting side tracked w a joke while everyone is on the edge of their seat waiting to hear about the tourney - Dang this tourney is super dangerous and there's an age restriction. Are even any characters we know that meet the requirements? W Percy gone I dont think so. Surely Harry is going to qualify somehow.
Also want to set expectations going forward - Things are probably going to be going slower than the first 3 books. Just getting into busier season @ work, plus a lot more sporting events, nice weather ect. Also may take a short sabbatical after this one. TMB Book Club resumes in April which I wll be participating. Plus a new SW book in early april.
Snuck in a couple before hoops and hockey Chapter 13 - Mail time, still no word from Hedwig/Sirius - Hermione wolfing down food just to get to the library faster. Never change - Trelawney is so damn weird. - What a garbage hit piece on Mr Weasley. Surely Mr Malfoy put the writer up to it -LMBO @ Moody turning Draco into a ferret He can do no wrong in my eyes. Chapter 14 - Heh Snape dropping his tough guy act around Moody - He's only staying a year. Getting the 1 year gag out of the way early - Seems like Moody has seen some shit. Doesn't fuck around. - Why are we paying this much attention to Neville? - What are the twins workign on? Worried about being accusatory - Hedwig is back! And Sirius is on his way too. I dont really have any big theories. Nothing seems out of place. There's always that lingering feeling that the Dracos are going to jump into this and become Voldemort allies again. Also eager to learn more about Moody's backstory.
How you can go through that and still decide "yea imma chill for several days without reading it again" is mind blowing to me.
