The only way it works as an insurance plan is if the insurer has enough clout to enact effective cost controls with pharm companies and healthcare providers. When you make a plan geared toward people that are really sick, you have a small pool of interested subscribers and therefore very little ability to negotiate costs down. If you want to really control costs, you need a massive subscriber pool so that you can dictate to pharm companies and providers what they are going to receive for their goods and services.

When it is able to fully negotiate price controls, it's likely that private plan subscribers will benefit from that as well. Which brings us back to our discussion of national defense and opting out of paying for it. So since the private subscribers are benefitting from the existence of the large government run plan, shouldn't they be chipping in too? Wouldn't that just make sense?

I want to come back to this. Cause I think it was missed on the first run through. You realize how silly this post is right? Once single payer is in place, each individual would not have a choice on whether or not they support it. They may opt for supplemental healthcare, but they are paying for the same base national coverage as everyone else.
I was not proposing single payer. I proposed 2 options that would exist simultaneously. Over time, it's possible that each individual could choose to go to the "sick" pool, which would create a de facto single payer system.
How drastically different is that than having Obamacare + Medicaid/Medicare currently working simultaneously?
