Well you see little Rules Jr here is a statue of General Lee, he was a traitor to our country, fought to own people as property, and had to bend the knee because he lost. Doesn't really go over that well... We should have statues, great statues, but we have a little bigger pool to pull from than rebellious losers. (We should learn about these people as well, but maybe not make them the focal point of southern cities.)
It would be one thing if the statues were accompanied by an accurate historical representation of who the person was. I doubt statues of Robert E Lee have a plaque stating that he was a West Point grad and a distinguished US military officer, but that he was also a traitor to his country and that he fought to preserve the institution of slavery. The vast majority of these statues are meant to celebrate the individuals, and they clearly don't deserve it.
Does anyone really give a shit about these statues in the first place? This isn't Iwo Jima or the Statue of Liberty.
Also those statues and everything were erected decades after as a way to instill the Confederate (white supremacist) legacy So fuck your statues and your fake outrage, if your kid wants to learn they have the internet
Eh he's been white washed pretty severely and has been proven to be a thug who killed thousands of natives We can honor the discovery of the new world but we don't need to honor people who were by all measures bad people
When I'm president/supreme dictator we will put up 69 Lenin statues in every Trump voter's front yard hth
Need Benedict Arnold statues, with him riding high on a beautiful steed, looking handsome and majestic, and the plaque should say how he was always very nice to women and didn't actually like treason, but so it goes
Statues are kind of meh in general to me. They aren't something historic. They are just something that commemorates something historic. It's like a forced history.
Then we will have to rename it again when everyone remembers or learns that Sherman was actually fairly pro-slavery. https://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/01/17/shermans-southern-sympathies/
You know what's the crazy thing about history? We can learn about it in other avenues than statues. I know plenty about Robert E. Lee and I've never seen one of his statues. Crazy!
I didn't before Saturday, more like Tuesday, but now I want all those confederate memorials to come down, fuck these Nazis.
There will be memes that pretend this is what people want taken down though. And they'll be circulated on Facebook and Twitter and the morons will believe that, too.
He sure as hell was when the war started, but he changed his mind once he saw the bravery of the freed slaves. He was the man that issued the order to provide freed slave with 40 acres and a mule but president Andrew Johnson rescinded his order. Plus he fucked the confederacy bigly so he's cool.
Well obviously he said some pretty awful stuff, but it doesn't diminish what he accomplished in terms of saving the Union and destroying slavery. Actions>words
that's my overall point. it's a losing issue. especially once you get past the "confederate" bar and move on to people like jefferson, washington, colombus, etc. focus on the issues that the electorate you need cares about.
i studied for every history test in high school and college by just walking around town and looking at statues
Defending Nazi and white supremacist will always strike a nerve with me, but after the ass whooping your Nazi buddies received on Saturday I'm happy as fuck. Ironically that a Trump minion is calling someone else a snowflake?
Bad as it may be, when the chips were on the table he fought tooth and nail (and brilliantly) to destroy the rebellion to the US Gov't that was the Confederacy and to end the institution of slavery in these United States. Personal motives were all mixed back then... but it isn't like he refused to serve his country on the grounds that he thought slavery should continue. Still good in my book. Edit: I still wear my "Undefeated Out of Conference" Sherman shirt around the south in hopes of pissing off confederate sympathizers.
It's not like there are only a handful either. Someone posted a map of the number of confederate statues erected in the 20s and 60s, I was surprised at the sheer number of them.
You have to admit they are really good with their talking points. "Fake news " "leaks" "unmasking" and now "alt-left" they hold on to parrot those talking points for dear life.
You got a link for that shirt? Edit: nevermind https://drygoods.elevenwarriors.com/products/sherman-undefeated-out-of-conference-tee
I don't think they're good, they just know that the idiots will slurp it up and not ask any questions.
A friend of mine is pissed off like you wouldn't believe. West point grad, nearly perfect sat score. I've always felt he was aware he was playing a role, but it was the easier thing to do coming from a family of conservative west point grads and he's completely convincing. He has called me the past three nights ranting to the point where he asked multiple times if I was still on the line
This is ridiculous. Look, politicians need to serve their people. I get that, but playing to fears, ignoring hate, ignoring wrongs, ignoring history is no way to progress as a society. I could run for congress right now by shooting an AR-15 in the air and screaming "fuck yeah! America!" then stone cold a busch light and I may win. That achieves nothing. Fuck it. I may do that.
Congratulations Spain, you "discovered" a land 500 years after the Vikings did. And thousand of years after the asians did.
This reminds me that a local politician's campaign commercial a few years ago was not much more than him shooting a copy of Obamacare with a rifle. And it probably got him some votes.
You can trace the popularity of every one of these back to when Trump said it. Cult45 are basically a bunch of retarded windup dolls.
Talking about tearing down statues or changing your facebook picture to have a flag background of whatever country had the latest terrorist attack feels good and requires no actual effort or investment. Plenty of people talk a big game, but do absolutely zero to impact change on problems they proclaim to care deeply about on the internet. You could tear down every statue and rename every street, but that will ultimately do nothing to address issues of poverty, crime, and the failed war on drugs. One of the unrecognized tragedies here is that what little attention span most people have for issues that don't directly affect their personal lives will get used up on things that won't make any appreciable difference to future generations of kids whose deck of cards is now being shuffled.
Not at all, fuck Nazis and anyone who defends them. At least you've stopped pretending, I hope you attend the next rally.
I was proud. my real Marine buddy and I were talking last night He fucking hate's the alt-right. He also laughed at the term alt-left. He said Antifa is one thing, but there is no alt-left. This dude is a card carrying gun toting Republican.
Seems we can agree. Fuck the alt-right and alt-left. Fuck actual Nazis and fuck Antifa. Both are fascist scum.
Do your worship at that statue? I could not give a shit less about it, either way. But you acting like it coming down is some abuse of constituents is just bizarre to me.
