Was trying to figure out something to watch since I got off work early. Thanks for bumping this thread. Love me some Fincher and he directed the first 2 and last 2 episodes of this and is also an executive producer so I have little to no doubt that I will enjoy it.

Two episodes in. I like it, but mostly setup so far. It’s very interesting and has an x files vibe in that what they were studying was taboo and completely unknown at the time. Kemper is awesome.

I just finished. I really enjoyed it, but this season was entirely setup for what seems to be an awesome second season. It’s as if we got a much deeper look into how Will Graham from Manhunter became the character he was. Ending was good but left me wanting so much more.

8 episodes through, thought it was very good, feel like there's another level it's going to get to it hasn't reached. Has a Zodiac vibe to it.

I finished. Really enjoyed it. A few observations...

    - Really loved the first few episodes. Holden was definitely the hero. More on that later...
    - Tickling episode bothered me as much as it was probably supposed to. I can't believe anyone would think that is acceptable. I have to assume they were drawing from a real case.
    - Holden really developed as a character throughout the season, and not in a sympathetic way. To me, dealing with all those serial killers for so many hours made the lines really blur in his eyes. By the end, he was coming across as a cocky asshole who felt he was above any rules.
    - Honestly thought it fizzled a bit at the end. Too much focus on the second season. I realize they want to build this serial killer in Kansas, but there should have been SOME payoff with his character. Like him sending a letter to Holden challenging him after seeing the article in the paper.

I was thinking similar at the end, but we know where that is going anyway. As far as his evolution as a character goes, it takes crazy to know crazy. This is why I referenced Will from Manhunter. The behaviors definitely rubbed off on him. I suspect he will have a bit of a rise and fall moment next year and settle down somewhat or maybe we just saw that with the last episode.

As an aside, I was very confused by one thing. Holden appeared to walk out on his girlfriend at the social experiment because of her lab partner, but it seemed like there was never any conversation about that. I know they had issues, but I was surprised that it went unaddressed.

There were times where I wished they had cast a bigger dude to be more true to Kemper's size in real life (6'9") or used some tricks but the guy playing him did such a great job I can see why they had to go with him and didn't feel the need for any trickery.

Such a good show, really looking forward to season 2.

I amd pretty sure that the guy in Kansas has to the BTK Killer, I would assume that Holden will play out like Will Graham and he is out of the FBI after his breakdown but they have him come back because of the BTK killer and the FBI turn to him because he is the best at getting in their head.

It's 100% BTK. And I'm excited to see how they handle it because depending on when exactly we are on the show (I know late 70's but how late?) he's already committed 5-7 of his 10 murders and won't be caught for nearly another 30 years. I feel like it's something we may end up getting teasers for basically for the duration of the series.

I am pretty sure the show started in 1977. You saw BTK mailing what I would assume are taunts to media and police after some of his early murders. I am assuming that is what brings Holden back or gets the FBI to adjust to Holden’s tactics.

Just finished last night. Really liked it. Ford is a weird character, but did anyone else expect his girlfriend to be involved in some weird shit based on the first few episodes?

Somewhat related, I was talking with my supervisor yesterday telling him about this show. He worked with Robert Hare and Stephen Hart for several years in Canada (probably the two most influential people in the psych field with psychopathy). He was telling me about going to a "training" with some people from the BAU several years ago and said they had no clue what they were talking about.

I really enjoyed the show. Great story, cinematography was awesome, and the soundtrack was pretty sweet. Holden's character development was great too. It wasn't like most shows where you see a character sort of flip a switch. His changes were very nuanced and gradual, til about the last couple episodes where it reached a boiling point. He starts out as an agent who isn't particularly ambitious, and at the end his hubris makes him believe that as a genius, he is beyond reproach. I liked that you can't really point to an exact moment where that occurs.

It was gradual like you said but the point where it just went into overdrive was after they got the confession in Georgia. They told the local PD that if they gave the polygraph to the suspect and he beat it that he'd think he was Superman. They do it anyway, Ford and Tench have to come back down and save the day and Ford beats Superman. After that his ego was just out of control. The final scene when he goes to see Kemper is so good. Kemper humbles him in a massive way and brings him, quite literally, crashing back down to earth when Ford collapses as he flees the ICU. He got Ford to admit "I don't know" when he asked him why he was there and that made Ford realize, in a pretty terrifying situation, that he didn't know as much as he thought he did.

Also BTK was a great example of a serial killer that could never be caught unless he wanted to be. His patience was unusual. Taunted the authorities bc he was a narcissist, seems like the perfect killer for a profiler.
