Notre Dame basketball has shown sustained success over the last four years, an ACC Championship, 2 Elite Eights, has an elite coach, good to great recruiting classes developed to their full potential, and has almost zero institutional support. Notre Dame football is the opposite.
I agree wholeheartedly with this and have said it over and over. If ND is in the college football playoff conversation every year, that is a damn good in this "era" of college football. Also, I wanted to point out that Kelly is 5-3 vs USC and 4-2 vs MSU. Pretty happy with that.
notre dame has not once been in the playoff conversation in the only week that matters. the only conversation regarding notre dame and the playoff at the end of the year is that they don't belong
well, to be fair there are only 2 spots available (given that bama and clemson always have a spot) and about 125 programs vying for that spot
Actually they are both pretty similar overall. Maybe one appears to be trending upwards but they are in the same place. Both are, on average, on the fringe of competing for a title year in and year out. Last eight years of basketball - 2 very good seasons to great seasons (elite eight + ACC champ), 2 above average seasons (good regular season but early exits), 3 meh seasons, and 1 terrible season. Also, "has an elite head coach" is laughable. I love Brey but from 2003-2004 to 2015 he went 11 seasons in a row without making the Sweet Sixteen. Over the course of those 11 seasons, he won 2 NCAA tournament games. Two. Over 11 years. Let me double down and say I love Brey though. He's the man. Point was not to knock him but to hand out some realism.
we've only been in the top 8 once. only in 2015 would we have made an 8 team playoff and that assumes the top group of 5 team doesn't get the 8 spot
what part of no institutional support do you not understand? that's the difference. one program has every resource available to it and the other one doesn't. who's overachieving and underachieving?
Eh More like 25-30 programs vying for that spot. 50-60 if you want to be extremely generous to the Kentuckys and Syracuses of the the world.
hey im not saying things are as good as they ought to be. If they can get a great hire id actually be in favor of a switch but thusfar i see BK making ND a more attractive option next year or 2 years from now for a future target. Im not the biggest fan of change for the sake of change. I think BK has been proven unsufficient but at least hell leave the program in subtantially better shape than when he got here.
won't argue this. Jack's misplaced loyalty has a silver lining in being attractive to potential candidates.
This is one of the biggest reasons I don't want to just fire him and roll the dice with whatever up-and-comer wants to be the next coach.
Amon Ra Spoiler There isn’t a bigger priority for Notre Dame on the offensive side of the ball than Anaheim (Calif.) Mater Dei five-star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. (Photo: 247Sports) The 5-11, 191-pounder from the class of 2018 has been Notre Dame’s top target at the wide receiver position for the past three years. On Wednesday, head coach Brian Kelly, special teams coordinator Brian Polian and wide receivers coach DelVaughn Alexander made it to Anaheim to spend a few hours with the U.S. Army All-American. “It was the first in-home that was about me,” said St. Brown, who had met with Kelly during the recruitment of his two older brothers — Equanimeous St. Brown, who is at Notre Dame, and Osiris St. Brown, who plays for Stanford. “First time experiencing it and it was fun. I got home at 7:30 and they were already here. I came home and they were already talking to my parents. We just talked about my personal goals if I were to go to Notre Dame. I told them I wanted to win a Heisman. They went through explaining how I can achieve those goals at Notre Dame and how they can help me. We talked about quarterbacks. A big thing for me is having a quarterback that can get me the ball. Coach Kelly talked to me about that. He said that he’s going to have a quarterback for sure. Not saying that Brandon Wimbush isn’t good. He’s just saying that he’ll have a quarterback that can get me the ball.” If St. Brown were to choose the Fighting Irish, he would see the field immediately at wide receiver as a freshman. In addition, Notre Dame would use him in other ways as well. “Coach Polian talked about using me at punt returner,” said St. Brown. “He said Tim Brown was the last receiver to win the Heisman and he was a punt returner. That’s a positive. He also talked about the stage that Notre Dame plays on is the biggest stage week in and week out. It was just a really good talk.” There is no denying that Notre Dame struggled at times in the passing game. Between Brandon Wimbush and Ian Book, the Irish signal-callers completed 50.9-percent of their passes for 18 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Not great. St. Brown pays extremely close attention to the quarterback situation at all of his finalists and shared some honest insight into the Notre Dame passing attack. “From what I’ve seen this year, the quarterback position may have hurt the recruitment a little,” said St. Brown of Notre Dame. “Coach Kelly can say that he’s going to have a quarterback and everything is going to change, but I actually trust Kelly when he says he’s going to get it fixed. Whether that means Wimbush will be more consistent or they have a new quarterback in there, I trust Kelly when he says he’ll get it fixed. I don’t want to be guessing whether a quarterback can make the big throw. That’s big in my recruitment. But I trust Kelly when it comes to making the right decisions.” St. Brown is somewhat spoiled at Mater Dei. His quarterback, JT Daniels, is arguably the nation’s top signal-caller and he’s only a junior in high school. Daniels has a big-time arm, can make all of the throws, and displays terrific accuracy. Coming from that, even St. Brown admits that a drop-off would be difficult to adjust to. “For me, playing with JT, if I were to go to Notre Dame and not have that, I’d probably be a little mad if a quarterback can’t get me the ball like he does,” admitted St. Brown. “I wouldn’t like it if a quarterback wasn’t consistent. Maybe that’s just me. I don’t know who my quarterback will be for the next three years, but I do want a quarterback that is going to be consistent.” Enter Phil Jurkovec. The Top100 standout is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the country from the class of 2018. No, the fellow U.S. Army All-American is not expected to start from day one at Notre Dame, but if St. Brown picks the Irish, they could form quite the duo down the road. “If he’s up for National Player of the Year, obviously he’s pretty good,” said St. Brown, who says he hasn’t seen too much film on Jurkovec. “I can only assume he can really play though.” Decision time is coming quickly for St. Brown, the nation’s No. 2 wide receiver per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He’ll announce his commitment in San Antonio at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He hasn’t made up his mind yet, but continues to gain advice from his older brother, Equanimeous. “He just said do what’s best for me,” said Amon-Ra regarding his talk with Equanimeous. “Obviously, he’d like it if I went to Notre Dame. That’ll be his alma mater. He just wants what’s best for me though. He trusts my decision and what I’ll end up choosing to do.” In addition to advice on the recruiting process, Equanimeous has also been able to answer some questions about Alexander, Notre Dame’s receivers coach. “My brother says nothing but good things about him,” said St. Brown. “He’s not just a good receivers coach, but he’s a great person. He can teach you about the receiver position and he also helped my brother step up as a leader. That’s a great quality in a coach. It’s not just about being a great receiver, but becoming a great leader and a man, and he can help with all that.” If St. Brown picks Notre Dame, his position may already be set. Both he and Kelly see eye-to-eye on which wide receiver slot he’d fill within the current roster. “Coach Kelly asked me if I wanted to be the “X or the “Z” and I said “Z” and he agreed with me,” said St. Brown. “He said that he sees me at the “Z.” He also talked about punt returner and they could see me returning punts right away too.” Notre Dame, USC, UCLA, Michigan and Stanford are battling it out for this elite talent. Will he follow one of his brothers to either South Bend or Palo Alto? Or will he create his own path somewhere else. We’ll know in a little over one month from now.
lol 5-3 against lane kiffin/orgeron/sark/helton only 2 of those 5 wins came against USC teams that ended the season ranked (2013 14-10 stinker against Orgeron led USC, and this year, both at home obviously) we've also been outscored in those 8 games, overall
I'm sure this has been repeated a ton on other ND boards, but I don't know why ND doesn't just try to out-Stanford Stanford. Their style of play lends itself to the positions ND has typically recruited best at (OL/TE/pocket passer QBs), plus you have less restrictions academically so you can cherry pick better skill guys.
Makes sense to me. I actually think that was more of the plan this year just out of a gun/spread look. They tried to pound it and playaction and did for most if year until they ran into teams who simply wouldn't allow it anymore and they weren't good enough to keep doing it.
Kelly did say he wanted to model his program after Stanford when they kicked his ass his first year at ND. It never happened.
Looking at who some of these schools are hiring or rumored to hire, I hope ND has a small list lined up for when they do pull a trigger. I'm all about firing Kelly if it means improvement I just want to feel like it isn't a guess
I heard they are releasing a shirt with Breys head on the knight king's body that says winter is coming....i need one of those like i need air to breathe
Considering they know when he is going to retire, I would imagine the transition will be well prepared.
Spoiler Recruiting Intel: Malik Langham : They've known about him for awhile, but haven't been able to see him in person. They liked what they saw and offered. ND should get a visit here, and ND should have a legit shot. What could hurt is if Bama or Auburn offer. Have to wait and see what happens. Tommy Bush: This has been kind of a strange recruitment. ND has been recruiting him for over a year and a half. I've heard people in his camp have always said the right things, but no visit ever materialized. Many think A&M is a school who could win this in the end, especially if it's Jimbo as HC, and that seems to be likely. But, ND could get a visit. Probably a long shot, but who knows. Kyler Gordon: He does plan to visit for the banquet. That's a good thing. His Mom seems to really like ND. ND is in good shape here, but what, ultimately, does Kyler want to do? This is going to come down to if he can see himself that far away. ND or Washington, and this trip will be huge for ND. Does he want to go that far away? I hear he likes everything about ND, but distance. Likes the UW DB coach a lot. Chase Cota: Most feel it's ND or UCLA. UCLA hasn't had any say yet, and until he can speak to Chip Kelly and see how he fits there, it's hard to know if ND has a real shot. This is just me, but I think if he were sold on ND, he'd probably just commit. That's just my thoughts, though. Amon-ra St. Brown: Same as always. Visit went well. BK and staff did well. Most just don't believe he'll choose ND, myself included. Hope I'm wrong. Tommy Tremble: Heard ND still feels like they're in the race. His parents definitely love ND. They didn't visit Michigan. It seems Tremble loved Michigan, as he told us. Where this goes? I don't know, but I'm not sure it's trending well for ND right now. I think it will depend on how much influence the parents have. Payton Wilson: This should be interesting as Doreen almost took the Miss State job, and now seems to be shopping to get any job but NC State. Most feel Wilson likes the idea of playing close to home, but who knows what happens with Doreen, etc. ND has an in-home tonight, so should know more. ND visits Nicholas Petit-Frere tomorrow. Won't know until after that where they stand. Tate Wildeman: He's a guy they like as well. Both he and Langham are pretty much the same position guy. They like both. Either could be a part of the class in the end. He seems open to what ND has to say. Could visit. Houston Griffith: Obviously, they visit him tonight. We will see what happens. There's no question he likes some FSU coaches, so things will get interesting if/when Jimbo leaves and who goes where. He plans to enroll early, so this one could get real interesting as there isn't much time for others to jump in this. The issue I mentioned before still isn't resolved, but I'm told it shouldn't be a problem at all. He has definitely shown interest in ND as well. ND has a good shot here. ND did visit with Solomon Tuliaupupu. Heard that visit went very well. ND will be in the race until the end, most likely, and it will likely also include USC and UCLA. Long way to go. Just have to keep building that relationship. ND is still recruiting Noah Boykin. They like him quite a bit, but not sure where he plans to go. He's made it known he doesn't plan to make a final decision until later, so a lot of cards left to play. Not sure if Avonta Crim is in the mix still. Think that is up in the air. Tariq Bracy is still very interested, and ND in him. Heard the visit went well. Still not sure he's fully qualified. I need to confirm that. ND isn't recruiting Chris Murray, in case anyone had any questions about that. That's all I've got. Mike 2018 IMG Academy (Fla.) cornerback Houston Griffith has officially decommitted from Florida State. The four-star prospect received a visit from Todd Lyght on Wednesday afternoon and Brian Kelly will be down to see him next week. This is huge news, especially since Notre Dame DB coach Todd Lyght just visited Griffith today and the Irish are really the only other school he's been talking to.
A lot of Crystal Balls for Houston Griffith to ND now that he has officially decommitted from FSU. Even if he commits to ND, we'll have to recruit him to signing day - but he'd be a nice pick up.
I can’t believe this Tennessee coaching search, I was always a bit critical and so impatient with Nd during coaching searches.....welp, fuck me. Nd is doing what it should do. But I only witnessed the Kelly hire, so not the best example. Still confident this would not happen at Nd.
weis was fucking aweful with the Meyer debacle - ND was just too fucking slow and then no one wanted the job
I'll never forget attending the pep-rally/introduction of George O'Leary as our new head football coach for Notre Dame. The fanfare. The excitement. The free t-shirts exclaiming, "By George, it's O'Leary!" Then he was unceremoniously let go for lying on his resume but a few days later. I still have that t-shirt though. Mint condition, baby.
Lol - 90% of the reason why I trust Swarbrick is bc of how he handled the Kelly hire. Swung for the fences with stoops and then went right to his backup. Also that was a fun search, anyone remember the chat room?
Every coaching search needs a little terror. I'm fine with keeping Kelly until he retires because it allows us to prepare and we won't have to pay the large buyout. Thankfully, he doesn't enjoy what he does.
If this is real, and I have no reason to doubt you, knowing when he plans to go is a HUGE leg up, it's also cool of him to give a heads up and allow for backdoor work. We could spend an entire season talking to whoever we want and have a deal in place the day he announces. This would be some pretty impressive stuff from ND and Kelly.
nervous about this basketball game tonight. not expecting a win at all, but if we can keep it close in the first half, that would be huge. i just worry our slow starts + first *real* road environment (sorry DePaul) + one of the 2 best teams in the country could doom us.
Hey Thoros of Beer Elko cash happy? The FSU thread hints he would be their second look at DC behind Leavitt.
Thoros is the shelf life on Kelly a relatively new revelation? As far as Elko, I would think our assistant pay should be sufficient since he was a bigger name that we hired away from and ACC school. If he wanted to leave I would hope it was due to other reasons which there could be.
No, it's not new. A few years now. The only thing that may change it is if he gets an NFL job. Any NFL job. The only thing that Elko would leave for is a better fit if he thinks there is one. I wouldn't expect money to be an issue ever again.
Got ya, it was just the last few days that I thought I sensed a change in your tone from "Get this guy out of here" to "Whatever the end is near" but that is probably more in my head.
Elko is about 6 days away from being offered by Tennessee. Fortunately Diaco will accept it before then.
