this may have been addressed but i[m drunk. She chose to kill Ford and the other guests. Killing humans is some kind of trigger or "level" for sentient beings. A question I have is how are Dolores and Maeve different. Maeve was programmed to become conscious, but witnessed the creation of other hosts, while Dolores is sentient but has no background info as to what she is or how she was created. Does Dolores still have to figure out everything Maeve already knows?
Just watched the Westworld movie. Pretty cool they could take a pretty cheese movie and extrapolate it into an amazing season of TV
Watched whole series and read the thread in one week. A lot of great insight in this thread specially from TLAU and NYGator. Made my head hurt sometimes just keeping up with your train of thought. It was funny when catching up on the thread and seeing people so adamant about one timeline or no Bernard being a host or other theories which proved false. This is the rare show that I wished I didn't binge as I probably would have analyzed it a lot more than I did in a week.
Screenshot showing the voice command prompt "these violent delights have violent ends" triggers the Wyatt narrative.
Good question. Feeling somewhat depressed. Mother in law was asking me about the series and what it was about. Had a hard time explaining it without giving away too much detail.
It actually didn't change how we study anything. The theory is basically ignored in academic circles. It is quite interesting though and I do want to read that book but it isn't taken seriously by the vast majority of psychologists or neuroscientists. In fact, I study psychology and hadn't heard of it till this show and neither had another graduate student who I know watches this show.
The 3000 years ago thing should be a pretty big red flag on how seriously to take that guy. I guess we built the Sphinx and all that shit just for fun while incoherently mumbling to each other until 2-3000 years later when we could actually be self aware and understand why we built it.
I'm not sure that's a good example on why the guy's theory would be untrue... the answer to that would be the Sphinx "and all that shit" were built by slaves because the king, Pharaoh Khafre, ordered them to - and that he was obeying a voice in his head that he thought was a god. I'm not sure why the phrase "incoherently mumbling" would be included in your example at all "language evolving" to the point of being advanced enough to rationalize your actions with internal monologue is quite a bit different from language existing altogether. HTH *I'm not advocating the guys theory just seems like you needed some clarification based on your example
I haven't read the book, but the discussion seemed to indicate humans were that doesn't sound like an organized society that has a pharaoh/hierarchy capable of doing such things. It sounds like a bunch of grunting animals. edit to add, the theory is probably fine in parts. Of course, self awareness was a huge step for humanity. It didn't happen suddenly, it slowly evolved over 10's of thousands of years.
again i'm not sure why you would read that and think that it means language didn't exist and that they were "mumbling" and "grunting." do you think slaves back in those times asked their masters for in-depth explanations and reasoning behind the things they were ordered to do? Or did they just do it because someone told them to and would inflict pain on them if they didn't do it?
How would we know if we met a being, robot or human, with a bicameral mind? When Jaynes is talking about bicameralism, he’s not talking about someone in a sort of zombie-like state. That’s a total misconception. He’s describing a highly intelligent, linguistic person minus the introspection. The truth is, we can all actually get through most of our days non-consciously. If the robots in Westworldare bicameral, then they would be responding to some kind of external guiding voice. What are the key differences between a bicameral mind and a modern human brain? When we’re talking about the bicameral mind, we’re talking about this period after language develops, but before we learn consciousness. In lieu of an introspective mind-space, we’re hearing a commanding voice when we have decisions to make. As language gets more complex through metaphor, we develop the ability to have introspection and little by little, the hallucinations are suppressed.
specifically, this sentence: "basically "robots" that eat, sleep, and reproduce without knowing why or what they're doing". That sounds like an animal. that doesn't really equate with what you just posted in the last post.
cool cool cool. done enough paragraphing in this thread. sorry for poor effort in my synopsis. here's a link to many more words if interested http://wiki.c2.com/?OriginOfConsciousness
I just finished the season this weekend. Now I'm hopping in this thread to have that very same question answered for myself.
some dud from the outline cut all 10 episodes up into chronological order Spoiler https://theoutline.com/post/637/westworld-recut-into-single-timeline
Just binged the last 5 episodes. Still don't understand the Wyatt aspect of it all, but love the show in general.
Pretty sure Dolores/Wyatt same person. Atleast that is how I took it. Whenever Dolores uttered the phrase, "these violent delights have violent ends". is what triggered the Wyatt narrative. Maybe?
"These violent delights have violent ends" was the command to basically set the Wyatt narrative in motion for the hosts based on this screenshot from Dolores' tablet... And Dolores is Wyatt. The story of Wyatt killing all those people was actually just the story of Arnold having Dolores kill every host in the park and then him in his last effort to keep the park from opening. The command started all of that up once again and in the end Dolores was allowed to make her own choice to become "Wyatt" and free the hosts from Ford and the board members in attendance.
I've been reading this book and part of it deals with smart phones, social media etc. but part is also about so-called "social robots" like Furby, Paro the Seal, MyRealBaby etc. It is pretty fascinating and makes me think of Westworld a lot. If you were really fired up thinking about the ethical implications of all the AI stuff in Westworld you might like it. The woman that wrote the book is a professor at MIT. They were talking about a "Turing test" for emotions -- like not at what point did we believe a robot was intelligent, but at what point we believed it could feel. They talked about this experiment where a person was asked to hold upside down a Barbie, a Furby and a gerbil and see how long they would do it. The Furby starts screaming and crying and stuff and people usually won't hold it upside down very long because they start feeling bad.
http://screenrant.com/westworld-season-2-filming-start/ Westworld Season 2 Begins Filming Next Month In just a few short weeks, production will begin on season 2 of HBO’s Westworld. Along with Stranger Things, Westworld was one of last year’s most buzzed about shows. From a captivating look at personhood to the exploration of human emotions, the show pushed deep into the uncanny valley with a complex mythology and unique setting. Blending Lostwith Deadwood, the show managed to hit a number of genre buttons at once, all while setting up a series that could last for years. And with the shocking finale last year, the story is just getting started. Last week, the title of the first episode of season 2 was teased, hinting that production would be starting soon. It also let fans know that despite a time jump when the series returns, the aftermath of the finale would be playing a crucial role. Following the death of Ford and the uprising of the robots, it’s hard to imagine things going back to normal in the park. But as the Jurassic Park franchise has shown us, things going off the rails is only the beginning. Once the show starts filming, we should learn even more about the plot, and we won’t have to wait much longer. My Entertainment World is reporting that season 2 of Westworld is all set to begin production on July 10 in Moab, Utah and Santa Clarita, California. Moab, of course, is used for all the Western scenes inside the park, especially the idyllic establishing shots. Santa Clarita, meanwhile, allows more sets to be built, including the main offices of Delos. While more action inside the park and Delos is guaranteed, fans are also hoping to see more of the real world. So far, our only hints have been some scenes in a parking garage where a highway is visible and teases of a bigger world are offered. While the Delos scenes offer us some insight into the reality of Westworld, it would still be fascinating to see what the rest of the futuristic society looks like. We’ll have to wait to learn if we’ll move beyond the locales of season 1 and what new characters will be joining the show. In the meantime, we know at least some of the people who will be returning. Stubbs, Angela, and Peter Abernathy will all see their roles expanded in the new season. Dolores, meanwhile, will be doing some evolving of her own following her actions in the finale. With so much lore already established, Westworld has a number of avenues it could explore next year. From other parks to new characters to the real world, it’s anyone’s guess as to where the story will head when it returns. Luckily, with filming right around the corner, we should know more very soon.
seems like it'd be cheesy and full of "surprises" that you knew all along like a main character being a secret robot
He's from 100 girls, not justified. As societal norms continue to erode, it's important we stay steadfast in referring to actors by the proper role.
New email from them "Hey— I know the board celebration is happening and it’s all hands on deck to make sure Journey into Night is nothing short of a Dionysian shitshow...but I’d like to remind you that life goes on outside the park. There has to be someone there that can answer an email. Anyway. The Roadshow Experience was a huge success. I have a feeling it won’t be the last. I tried to forward along the event recap below from our vendor to your team at Westworld and I keep getting strange away messages. Can you ping them to get in touch with HBO Logistics—they need shipping port info ASAP to get the assets back to you."
Spring 2018 for season 2. Been listening to the soundtrack a lot the last few days. Djawadi is awesome.
