I would kill to have him back for another season. He's so fucking consistent. Never seems to have a bad game. But.... Quade Green and Quickley will suffice
Grant Williams sure does fall down rather easily with little contact for a guy as big and strong as he is.
Capel isn't on the list or a factor. It wasn't long ago Matta was an elite CBB coach. While there are always unknowns (like health), he would be the best coach on paper we've ever hired. His resume speaks for itself. Do not understand how his hiring could "tremendously disappoint" anyone.
Jonas won't work for Crean but he will work for Matta. Jonas and Matta could be a helluva combination. Matta's overall record is stupid good.
His résumé is great, but I'm not sold that he is healthy enough to coach. What changed in the last 10 months? http://www.sportingnews.com/ncaa-ba...-smith-replacement/1ukvoms8p6h341fluuxdaat6uf If he was healthy, he's amazing, no doubt about that.
He isn't very old - like, 51 years old which is shocking. I assume we will thoroughly vet the health issue. Not a done deal yet so who knows but we are clearly not going the mid-major route.
If his condition was the type that could be completely rectified in less than a year, I don't think OSU would've fired him. They clearly thought it was bad enough to can a really good coach. That scares the shit out of me.
Based on the OSU folks I've talked to and seen that's not exactly what happened. I think they wanted to move on. I'm just going to assume that we will fully vet the health issue.
If UGA gets Matta you have to be happy I’d think. The mid major thing works like 20% of the time and rarely do you get a guy with his resume and his age available. May not work but it’s worth the gamble when you consider the assumed alternatives. Guys like him have worked at UT, AU, maybe Miss St but if they don’t have a good year next year you’ve gotta wonder about Howland.
for the first time in a while, Anderson was brilliant against Florida and switching to a matchup zone that stifled Florida before the end of the first half and into the 2nd half. Thats not a D he's been known for, but it finally worked. He has his moments and is usually stubborn as fuck in his philosophy.
UGA should just take a chance on a mid-major coach instead of taking on a recycled guy that couldn't get the job done at another P5 school.
Cal’s been fired before too for doing far shittier, what’s your point? He did a great job at OSU, he could do it again...
there's a fair amount of discussion in the cbb thread, but in short, he had a botched back surgery seven or eight years ago. it left him with chronic pain and drop foot, and he can barely walk. he still managed to coach and recruit at a high level for some time after the surgery, but his last couple years at OSU were rough all around. not really an urban meyer situation where a year or two away from the game will straighten him out unfortunately. just a question of whether or not he can function despite those issues.
they were hitting contested threes and shot like 79% from the field. They played out of their minds. Sorry I hurt your feelings little guy
To add to what yaywaffles said, Matta was a very hands-on coach. He was still pretty young when the surgery happened so he was used to really being on the practice floor with his guys and getting involved then next thing he knew he couldn't even take his own shoes off. So he had to completely change his coaching style, he lost some vital assistants to HC jobs over his last 5-6 years at OSU, didn't get the right replacements and, partly due to negative recruiting (one recruit said another coach told him Matta was dying), he wasn't recruiting at a high level anymore. His last really good class was 2015 (5th in the country) and 4/5 kids in that class left before their sophomore years and the 5th left or was kicked off the team after his sophomore year. The only top 100 player in his last class (2016) was also dismissed.
I like the draw. We don't really run into a team that would exploit our biggest weakness until maybe Kansas (depending on Azibuke's injury) or the Elite 8 (if we're lucky enough to sniff that). Clemson is long, but they aren't huge inside threat without Grantham. But we have to shoot better away from Auburn if we want to win any games or be really competitive. Our last 4 away games, we've been atrocious from 3. Shooting 25% won't get it done. If we shoot well from 3, I think we have a decent chance to get to the second weekend.
Legit asking, I don't know, but why should it matter? I read that Hayes supposedly signed Maten. While that's great, he's been an assistant since 2013...and from the looks of the roster hasn't exactly set the world on fire despite the Maten signing. Hammonds might be ok, did he sign him? I guess what I'm asking is why should they make a head coaching hire based around Hayes? This is a little strange to me
Shouldn't be the whole thing but it's part of the equation. Both the guys we are looking at are from the Midwest so they will need assistants that are familiar with the area. Hayes has done a really good job for us lately. He had the Hagans kid committed this year and at one point we had the top class in the country for next year.
