All the guys that have played for him seem to love him. He is a little over the top on the sidelines sometimes though and his style definitely isn't for guys that don't want to get coached hard.
Martin's a legit good dude. Just intense on the court. "I coached 16 years in the same inner city in Miami that I grew up in. Do you know how much money I sent to kids that played for me in high school when they were in college because I knew where they came from?" Martin said, according to a transcript of the broadcast published by the Kansas City Star. "I knew they didn't have a father figure." "I'm not going to tell you who they were," Martin said of the former high school players, "but I sent them a lot of money over the years to make sure they could take their girlfriend out to the movies, make sure they could wash their clothes and do all the things that scholarship money don't cover. They don't have an option. "It's not like they can work while they're in college," Martin added. "They can't find ways to make money. When there is no money at home, who is going to help these guys?"
I would be shocked if Martin was assaulting his players unless it was in self-defense from a Latrell Sprewell type situation. He seems to care too much about his players to do something like that.
My favorite thing about Martin is he once worked as a high school math teacher. He seems to actually play that teacher role
Am I still allowed to post here since we’re going to MSG for the NIT? I feel like the third wheel on a date right now.
Martin is known in Florida high school basketball as one of the biggest cheaters ever. I think he probably did take care of the guys he brought in but he had some insanely loaded teams with kids that he recruited that destroyed the hopes and dreams of other kids who were in programs who did things the right way. Whether you view that as someone providing opportunities to kids that needed one or taking opportunities from others is a matter of perspective. Older high school coaches smirk at where he is now because he was known as a talent accumulator more than a coach. They don't seem to despise him though for the most part, which says something about how he must have treated them as individuals.
I'm not mad. He was before my time coaching. I'm just telling people what his reputation is/was. It is up to them to decide if things like that bother them.
And he just officially announced he's coming back I'm pretty shocked, but not gonna complain. The plan was always for him to stay two years and then go pro when he signed, but he rocketed up draft boards so it had to have been tempting. I'm surprised he's not going to test the waters at all.
Yeah outside of game 1 against us, he was just horrid. Wonder if there was some sort of injury he was keeping quiet
He's an odd kid and I don't mean that in a slight. He's just very quite and closed off and he's never showed an ounce of emotion. It's very possible.
Agree. He never did any interviews in his recruiting process and when he did he gave really awkward and super short answers. Those two games were the only games he shot over 50% in conference play, and only had one game in non con against Gonzaga
My god. No wonder he couldn't hit a damn free throw. Dude could be SEC poty if he returns for a soph season.
The broken finger was on his left hand though, and he is a righty. Not sure how much of an effect that would have.
Neither are coming back and they both are gay Gotta do a little better than guide your team to a .500 record
I just looked out of curiosity and South Carolina's only had 1 SEC POY and that was a split :/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southeastern_Conference_Men's_Basketball_Player_of_the_Year
Yall are sleeping on Lamar Peters at State for POY consideration, he is going to blow up next year. The team we have coming back is going to be absolutely sick. You can book it we are going to be in the mix for the top tier of teams for next season.
Nah we'll be pretty solid. Had a PG sit out this year after transferring in that'll really help Gafford out. We're bringing in a pretty deep recruiting class and Khalil Garland redshirted this year out of precaution for a heart murmur or he probably would have been a starter.
Peters is nice, the Spoons and Reggie's bitch ass is a really solid squad. I'll always be salty about him flipping.
When he was the man this year and not carried by Sin and Dozier, he got y'all a .500 mark. Not saying he's not a very good collegiate player, just not gonna garner postseason awards when his supporting cast blows and you don't even sniff the NIT.
