As it stands, this ruling changes things in like four states.

The ruling will most likely have farther reach than that. It's a pretty significant step in other states taking the plunge without fear of losing infrastructure expenses. May take a while but theres a reason the leagues are being more open about the topic.

Why would states with numerous casinos (like Nj or PA) dictate betting lines and not allow the casinos themselves to run things and set their own lines however they choose?

Thats the question that nobody knows yet. The states would make a larger amount of money by doing it all themselves.

    Basically there are two options:

Run it like Vegas which is basically a free market and works great. State gets a piece of it and the taxes.
In Ontario, the government runs it through the lottery. You can go to the convenient store and make a bet. With that the state and government will get all the market. Basically the would require the casinos to follow their rules on it.

Obviously the Vegas option is the best but each state might have its own way to do things.

Lobbying money will flow like water and nobody knows how it will shakeout. This is a relatively small scale example of what can happen when competition is introduced into this environment. My dad had one store with these machines in it which is the only reason I’m aware of the case.

Work out of a company based in Dublin and Paddy Power is actually a client. We went to visit them the day after the election and they lost their asses because of all the exit polls.

Anyhow, one of the Lads in our office in Dublin was showing me the app the day before the election and they can literally bet on anything there down to odds for every state, primaries, you name it. I just got into gambling a few years ago, casually. I haven't sucked any dicks yet, close a few times, but the sheer volume in which you can gamble on anything is quite eye opening if you havent been exposed. I'll occasionally get a prop via whatsapp that's hilarious from them. It usually involves Trump.

Lost their asses because they paid out early on Hillary? They regularly do that for publicity and I have to assume they build that into the marketing budget because that is pure marketing.

The live betting is just unreal in Europe. Go to Bet365.com right now and go to Live In Play and look at whats available to bet live at this moment.

Its not that crazy in the US because there isn't a market for it. Only the "sharps" will be betting soccer/tennis/cricket where regular Joe in Europe will be betting it daily. That is why you dont see lines at the casinos and such. Too much risk.

I read an article once where the most bet on sports in the world were:

    1-Horse Racing, 2-Soccer, 3-Cricket 4-Tennis, 5-Basketball

Of course thats a risk but no different than it is now. The same money is being bet today as will be bet tomorrow with it legal.

With it legalized you can actually watch the odds and technology will show where something is weird going on with the betting patterns.

Read this article. Its about a Challenger Tennis tour that gets bet on in Europe that was in Dallas. The odds showed how this match was fixed.

It will be interesting to see the level of involvement from NFL, MLB, NBA,...

Living in PA we should be one of the next in line after New Jersey. I can’t wait for online poker again. Open for bids now on sites with some legal things to work out but should happen the 2nd half of this year.

States are not going to run sports gambling. It will be the casinos inside the states, then a tax, just like all other gambling in the US other than the lottery.

I lived in Huntsville from 2003-2004. No lotto and scratch offs but you could buy a 20/40 at 3am. Has anything changed? Some kid from Auburn wrote a Theseus on how much the state was losing by not having gambling.

I heard an interview on local Denver radio with a guy from William hill in Vegas and he said some interesting things. It may have all been posturing but when they asked how vegas felt about it. He basically said fine and they were basically viewing it as a opportunity to expand their business. He then went on to say that sports books run on very tight margins(tighter than anything else gambling wise in Vegas) and that they are able to succeed in Vegas because of their skill level running sports books and Nevada’s low tax structure. He basically said because of those things some were jumping way ahead of the gun thinking it will explode over night across the country because it won’t even be worthwhile to open sportsbooks in a lot of places because the taxes and demands from the leagues will be too high and they’ll actually be losing ventures.

Not sure what the sportsbook is. Dog Track/Horse Track at least here in Florida is $600.00 and then you get the tax slip

The threshold for which gambling winnings must be reported to the IRS varies based on the type of game. At a horse track, you must report any winnings that exceed either $600 or 300 times your initial wager. For slot machines and bingo, you are required to report all winnings in excess of $1,200. In a poker tournament, you must report winnings above $5,000.

The law that was passed allowed you to continue whatever kind of sports gambling was legal in your state 25 years before the ruling. So Delaware and Oregon had like really small parlays allowed and there are some other states with specific and random shit

A (now ruled) unconstitutional law that was passed in 1992 pretty much outlawed sports betting but grandfathered in 3 states that already had it.

Of course, one of the schmucks at the forefront of getting the bill passed was Bill Bradley, former NBA player and dumbfuck senator from NJ.
