Inflation is outstripping wage growth but ya, the economy is on fire. Just like under Bush, companies are taking profits from tax cuts and pocketing it, not passing it on to workers.

Meet Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: The MiniMaduro Foreboding The Future Of Democrats
    Democrats - August 16, 2018

    (7) More
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Is Leading The Democrat Party To The Left With Nothing More Than An Unsubstantiated, Factually Incorrect Socialist Wish List

    TOP TAKEAWAYS

    • After Alexandria-Ocasio Cortez defeated a senior ranking incumbent Democrat in a primary, she has been called "the future" of the Democratic Party by DNC Chair Tom Perez and CNN's Chris Cillizza.
    • Ocasio-Cortez is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a group that:
      • Believes in the "abolition of capitalism" and "that the government should 'democratize' private businesses - i.e., force owners to give workers control of them."
      • Criticized President Obama in 2016 for imposing sanctions on Venezuela, called America's actions towards Venezuela "repulsive," declared Maduro's regime a "legitimate, democratically elected government" and announced they stood in solidarity with Venezuela.
    • Since her victory, she has ignited turmoil in her party by casting doubt on who will be the next House Democratic leader, refusing to support Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for that position, and saying Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ) were not true "working class champions."
    • Ocasio-Cortez's expensive ideas often lack any grounding in facts and she has been fact checked at least five times:
      • Ocasio-Cortez called Senator Bob Menendez the senator from Florida and had to be corrected that he was from New Jersey.
      • Ocasio-Cortez claimed "unemployment is low because everyone has two jobs," which The Washington Post Fact-Checker called "poppycock."
      • Ocasio-Cortez claimed the "upper-middle class does not exist anymore in America," which The Washington Post Fact-Checker said was "false."
      • Ocasio-Cortez claimed that Medicare-for-all would be "much cheaper" than our current system, which The Washington Post Fact-Checker said was "false."
      • Ocasio-Cortez claimed the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act "because they ruled that these monthly payments that every day Americans make is a tax," which The Washington Post Fact-Checker said was "false."
      • Ocasio-Cortez claimed that ICE had a "bed quota" which required the agency to fill 34,000 beds with detainees "every single night," which The Washington Post Fact-Checker said was "false."
ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ IS LEADING THE DEMOCRAT PARTY TO SOCIALISM EVEN IF IT MEANS PUSHING PARTY MEMBERS OUT OF HER WAY
Democratic Socialist Ocasio-Cortez Has Been Called "The Future" Of The Democrat Party
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, A Former Organizer For Bernie Sanders, Defeated Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY) In The New York Democratic Primary. "Mr. Crowley was defeated by a 28-year-old political newcomer, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a former organizer for Bernie Sanders's presidential campaign, who had declared it was time for generational, racial and ideological change." (Shane Goldmacher and Jonathan Martin, "Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Defeats Joseph Crowley In Major Democratic House Upset," The New York Times , 6/26/18)

    • Crowley Serves As The Chairman Of The House Democratic Caucus, "The Fourth Ranking Position In House Democratic Leadership." "Today, Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) was unanimously elected by his colleagues to serve as the Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus for the 115th Congress, the fourth-ranking position in House Democratic leadership." (Press Release, "Crowley Elected Chairman Of The House Democratic Caucus," Rep. Joe Crowley , 11/30/16)
Ocasio-Cortez Is A Member Of The Democratic Socialists Of America. "An activist and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, Ocasio-Cortez won over voters in the minority-majority district with a ruthlessly efficient grassroots bid, even as Crowley -- the fourth-ranking Democrat in the House -- outraised her by a 10-to-1 margin." (Gregory Krieg, "A 28-Year-Old Democratic Socialist Just Ousted A Powerful, 10-Term Congressman In New York," CNN , 6/27/18)

    • Democratic Socialists Of America (DSA) "Believ[e] In The Abolition Of Capitalism" And "That The Government Should 'Democratize' Private Businesses - I.E., Force Owners To Give Workers Control Of Them." "What does DSA believe in? Like most socialist organizations, DSA believes in the abolition of capitalism in favor of an economy run either by 'the workers' or the state - though the exact specifics of 'abolishing capitalism' are fiercely debated by socialists. DSA also believes that the government should 'democratize' private businesses - i.e., force owners to give workers control of them - to the greatest extent possible." (Jennie Neufeld, "Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Is A Democratic Socialists Of America Member. Here's What That Means," Vox , 6/27/18)
    · In 2016, DSA Criticized President Obama For Imposing Sanctions On Venezuela And Called Maduro's Government A "Legitimate, Democratically Elected Government." "In the past year, Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has been dismayed to see President Barack Obama and a bipartisan group of senators led by Marco Rubio (R-FL) violate US and international law to impose sanctions against the nation of Venezuela. We call on the President and Congress to reverse these actions and stop seeking to undermine the Venezuelan people and their legitimate, democratically elected government." (David Dusalde, "DSA Calls for Ending Sanctions Against Venezuela," DSA , 5/30/16)

    • DSA Went On To Call America's Posture Towards Venezuela "Repulsive" And Announced They Stood In Solidarity With Venezuela. "This kind of dishonest and cynical behavior is an embarrassment to all good people in the United States. For DSA, a group of activists committed to fighting for socialism and democracy in the U.S. and around the world, it is especially repulsive. We therefore state our solidarity with the people of Venezuela and call on our own government to stop its illegal, unjust interference with Venezuela, specifically to repeal these terrible laws and reverse this dishonest executive order." (David Dusalde, "DSA Calls for Ending Sanctions Against Venezuela," DSA , 5/30/16)
Ocasio-Cortez Has Brought "Socialism Back Into The Mainstream Political Discourse In This Country." "'The biggest thing that Alexandria has done for the movement has just been bringing socialism back into the mainstream political discourse in this country,' said Jack McShane, 24, an organizer for the DSA's East Bay chapter, one of dozens in California that are taking part in Ocasio-Cortez's California visits." (Carla Marinucci, "Ocasio-Cortez Visit Gives California's Democratic Socialists Hope," Politico , 8/3/18)

Democrats View Socialism More Positively Than Capitalism, With 57% Of Democrats Viewing Socialism Favorably And Only 47% Viewing Capitalism Favorably. "For the first time in Gallup's measurement over the past decade, Democrats have a more positive image of socialism than they do of capitalism. Attitudes toward socialism among Democrats have not changed materially since 2010, with 57% today having a positive view. The major change among Democrats has been a less upbeat attitude toward capitalism, dropping to 47% positive this year -- lower than in any of the three previous measures. Republicans remain much more positive about capitalism than about socialism, with little sustained change in their views of either since 2010." (Frank Newport, "Democrats More Positive About Socialism Than Capitalism," Gallup , 8/13/18)

Ocasio-Cortez Is "The Face Of An Energized Hard-Left Movement Pushing [Democrats] Further And Further To The Left." "By contrast, establishment Democrats understand her. She's the face of an energized hard-left movement pushing them further and further to the left. And there's not a damn thing they can do about it." (John Kass, "Alexandria The Great The Face Of A Hard-Left Movement, And Establishment Democrats Can Only Bob Their Heads," The Chicago Tribune , 7/25/18)

DNC Chairman Tom Perez Called Ocasio-Cortez "The Future Of Our Party." DNC CHAIRMAN TOM PEREZ: "I have three kids. Two of them are daughters - one just graduated college, one who is in college. And they were both texting me about their excitement over Alexandria because she really - she represents the future of our party. She ran a spirited campaign." (" The Bill Press Show ," 7/3/18)

"Ocasio-Cortez Has Been Touted As The Fastest-Rising Star In The Democratic Firmament." "Since her massive upset victory over New York Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley last month, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been touted as the fastest-rising star in the Democratic firmament." (Chris Cillizza, "Democrats Should Maybe Slow Their Roll On Pushing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez As Their Next Big Star," CNN , 7/18/18)

CNN's Chris Cillizza Said Ocasio-Cortez Could Be A "Future Leader Of The Party." "Ocasio-Cortez could well be a future leader of the party and, at present, represents the beating heart of its liberal, activist wing." (Chris Cillizza, "Democrats Should Maybe Slow Their Roll On Pushing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez As Their Next Big Star," CNN , 7/18/18)

Zephyr Teachout, A Fordham Law Professor And Attorney General Candidate, Said "I Cannot Overstate The Importance Of Alexandria's Victory." "'One of the great difficulties of challenging the IDC-and I really think we've passed the tipping point now-has not been that people find their behavior justifiable; it's that they found it confusing,' says Zephyr Teachout, a Fordham law professor and IDC critic who is running for attorney general. 'I cannot overstate the importance of Alexandria's victory,' Teachout says." (Tim Murphy, "Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Beat the Democratic Machine. Now She's Helping Other Candidates Do the Same." Mother Jones , 7/30/18)

The San Francisco Chronicle Called Ocasio-Cortez "The Hottest Political Sensation In Progressive Circles." "Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the hottest political sensation in progressive circles, buzzed through San Francisco on Tuesday for two fundraisers and to deliver a message: The political miracle the 28-year-old former bartender pulled off in defeating a 10-term Democratic House incumbent in New York can happen anywhere." (Joe Garofoli, "Progressive Sensation Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Brings Her Message To SF," The San Francisco Chronicle , 8/1/18)

From Feuds With Crowley To Attacks On Sitting Members, Ocasio-Cortez Is Already Making Waves And Causing Division Among Democrats
The Victory Of Ocasio-Cortez Left House Democrats Feeling "The Sting" Of The Mounting Progressive Movement With The Future Of The Party's Leadership "Up In The Air." "House Democrats felt the sting Wednesday of the growing progressive, anti-establishment movement that felled one of their rising stars, leaving the future of party leadership up in the air as they head into what could be a big midterm election." (Paul Kane and Erica Werner, "Crowley's Loss Divides Stunned Democrats About The Future Of Party Leadership," The Washington Post , 6/27/18)

Crowley's Loss, "The Most Significant Loss For A Democratic Incumbent In More Than A Decade," Shook The Party Across The Country As The New York Democrat Was Once Considered A "Possible Successor" To Nancy Pelosi As Leader. "Representative Joseph Crowley of New York, once seen as a possible successor to Nancy Pelosi as Democratic leader of the House, suffered a shocking primary defeat on Tuesday, the most significant loss for a Democratic incumbent in more than a decade, and one that will reverberate across the party and the country." (Shane Goldmacher and Jonathan Martin, "Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Defeats Joseph Crowley In Major Democratic House Upset," The New York Times , 6/26/18)

Crowley's Loss "Leaves A Gaping Vacuum In The House." "His departure leaves a gaping vacuum in the House, where he is the top-ranked Democrat under the age of 70." (Shane Goldmacher and Jonathan Martin, "Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Defeats Joseph Crowley In Major Democratic House Upset," The New York Times , 6/26/18)

After The Primary, Ocasio-Cortez Declined To Support House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) As Speaker If Democrats Take Back The House In November. CNN's POPPY HARLOW: "If you make it to Washington, if you win in November, would you support Nancy Pelosi for House Speaker should the Democrats take control of the House?" OCASIO-CORTEZ: "I think it's far too early to make those kinds of commitments right now. I think we just need to look at what the options are. You know, it's entirely possible, but we just need to see what the landscape is of the leadership. I think we need to just focus on winning in November first and then we'll have the conversation about our leadership." (CNN's " Newsroom ," 6/27/18)

Ocasio-Cortez Questioned Whether Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) And Bob Menendez (D-NJ) Were True "Working Class Champions." OCASIO-CORTEZ: "Well I think we look at -- just look at ‎what happened Joe Manchin this year. Joe Manchin faced a little to know talked about primary from a woman on the left, Paula Jean Swearengin. I know Paula Jean Swearengin very well. She's a coal miner's daughter, she ran on no money, like not only did she run on no corporate money but she -- she had nothing. In two years for a United States Senate race she raised 179,000 total and you know like when you're figuring stuff out in campaigns like she really had probably less than 100k to run -- to actually run that race. She was out there knocking doors herself, no money. Joe Manchin dropped $2 million against her, and she still got 30 percent of the vote. So that to me tells me that in West Virginia -- which like when almost every county in West Virginia went for Bernie in 2016, who's further to the left you know, that to me tells me that we need to start reframing our issues instead of left and right to top and down. And it's not about like, oh, you know, I have to whether my message to Republicans; there are people that really want to feel like there's an unapologetic working-class champion for them. If Paula Jean Swearengin had two million dollars, she got 30 percent of the vote on basically 79k; 30 percent, like that's unheard of. And she never held political office before or you look at on the other end, Bob Menendez in Florida, like he had an opponent that like didn't even run a campaign and she got like 40 percent of the vote or something like that." JON LOVETT: "New Jersey." OCASIO-CORTEZ: "Oh sorry, yeah New Jersey, sorry." (" Pod Save America ," 8/7/18)

    • Ocasio-Cortez Incorrectly Called Menendez The Senator From Florida And Had To Be Corrected That He Was From New Jersey. OCASIO-CORTEZ'S SOCIALIST MESSAGE EXCITES THE PROGRESSIVE BASE, BUT HER IDEAS LACK VALIDITY AND FACTUAL SUPPORT
Ocasio-Cortez Attacked Capitalism, And Touted Higher Taxes To Fund Her Socialist Programs Using False And Factually Incorrect Claims About The Financial Situation Of The Average American As Support
Ocasio-Cortez Wants To Raise Taxes In Order To Fund Medicare For All, A Federal Jobs Guarantee Program, And Free College And Trade School. MSNBC's WILLIE GEIST: "A couple other items on your policy agenda that you made very clear throughout: Medicare for all, federal jobs guarantee, and tuition-free public universities and trade schools." OCASIO-CORTEZ: "Yes." GEIST: "Those look to a lot of people like promises of gifts under the tree, but they wonder how they'll be paid for. Now you're in a position to carry these out. How at a time when the CBO says our debts and deficits are exploding, are going to cripple us, how do you pay for things like that?" OCASIO-CORTEZ: "It's an excellent question. First of all, I think we need to kind of look at the damaging history, legislative history, of what we've done with our taxes. Not only did we have a $400 billion GOP tax cut that could have actually forgiven every single federal student loan in America. We spent that money in December, and we spent it on tax cuts for the corporations and the very rich. But it means reviewing the Bush tax cuts. It means making sure that also, that we understand the power of the purse that Congress has, that, you know, when the United States was in the Great Depression that is when we pursued the New Deal. It was when people precisely said we have the least amount of ability to do this that we actually committed to an economically ambitious agenda that transformed the future and the course of this nation. And I think that it is absolutely possible, but what it takes is the political courage to do it." GEIST: "To raise taxes, to roll back the tax cuts in other words?" OCASIO-CORTEZ: "And not only - and not only that, but also understand that the federal government does have the ability in the similar way that we had in the New Deal to spearhead some of this agenda and some of that financing, as well." Ocasio-Cortez Said Capitalism "Will Not Always Exist In The World." MARGARET HOOVER: "Do you think that capitalism has failed to deliver for working class Americans or is no longer the best vehicle for working class Americans?" ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ: "Well I think the numbers you just talked about is part of the problem, right? Because we look at these figures and we say oh unemployment is low, everything is fine, right? Well, unemployment is low because everyone has two jobs. Unemployment is low because people are working 60, 70, 80 hours a week and can barely feed their kids. And so I do think that right now we do have this no holds barred, Wild West, hyper-capitalism. What that means is profit at any cost. Capitalism has not always existed in the world, and it will not always exist in the world." (PBS's " Firing Line ," 7/13/18)

    • The Washington Post Fact-Checker Called This Statement "Poppycock," Citing Data From The Bureau Of Labor Statistics That Shows 5.2% Of Americans Have Two Jobs. "This is an example of sweeping language - 'everyone has two jobs' - that can get a rookie politician in trouble. She may personally know people who have two jobs, but the data is pretty clear that this statement is poppycock. First of all, Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that the percentage of people working two jobs has actually declined since the Great Recession - and been relatively steady at around 5 percent since 2010. The percentage bounced around a bit but it was as low as 4.7 percent in October 2017 and was 5.2 percent in the July jobs report, the most recent available. That hardly adds up to 'everyone.'" (Glenn Kessler, "Fact-Checking Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Media Blitz," The Washington Post , 8/10/18)
Ocasio-Cortez Claimed The "Upper-Middle Class Does Not Exist Anymore In America." OCASIO-CORTEZ: "They [national Democrats] were campaigning most when we had more of an American middle class. This upper-middle class is probably more moderate but that upper-middle class does not exist anymore in America." (" Pod Save America ," 8/7/18)

    • The Washington Post Fact-Checker Dubbed This Claim "False." (Glenn Kessler, "Fact-Checking Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Media Blitz," The Washington Post , 8/10/18)

    • A Study From The Urban Institute Found That The Upper-Middle Class Had Actually Grown To 52% In 2014, Significantly Higher Than What It Was In 1979. "In knocking the current leaders of the Democrats, stuck in ''90s politics,' Ocasio-Cortez said the 'upper-middle class does not exist anymore.' But the data show that while the middle class overall may have shrunk a bit, the upper-middle class has actually grown. In a 2016 paper published by the Urban Institute, Stephen J. Rose documented that the upper-middle class has grown substantially, from 12.9 percent of the population in 1979 to 29.4 percent in 2014. His analysis showed that there was a massive shift in the center of gravity of the economy, with an increasing share of income going to the upper-middle class and rich. 'In 1979, the middle class controlled a bit more than 46 percent of all incomes, and the upper-middle class and rich controlled 30 percent,' Rose wrote. 'In contrast, in 2014 the rich and upper-middle class controlled 63 percent of all incomes (52 percent for the upper-middle class and 11 percent for the rich); the middle class share had shrunk to 26 percent; and the shares of the lower-middle class, poor, and near-poor had declined by half.'" (Glenn Kessler, "Fact-Checking Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Media Blitz," The Washington Post , 8/10/18)
Ocasio-Cortez Wants Medicare-For-All, But Incorrectly Cited The Cost Of Medicare-For-All And The Reason The Affordable Care Act Was Upheld By The Supreme Court
Ocasio-Cortez Claimed That Medicare-For-All Would Be "Much Cheaper" Than Our Current System And Said That Funeral Costs Should Be Considered When We Look At The Cost Of Health Care. CNN's CHRIS CUOMO: "Medicare for all, college tuition, maybe even housing, that the green new deal that you have, it is all very expensive, especially on the single payer side. It gives people sticker shock even in Bernie's home state they got sticker shock. They couldn't get it done in his state because of how expensive it is. And that was an 11% increase in taxes, 9 to 11%, even that was too much for people. How do you pay? How do you sell it?" OCASIO-CORTEZ: "So, first of all, the thing that we need to realize is people talk about the sticker shock of Medicare for All. They do not talk about the sticker shock of the cost of our existing system. You know, in a Koch brothers-funded study, if any study is going to try to be a little bit slanted it would be one funded by the Koch Brothers. It shows that Medicare for All is actually much more- is actually much cheaper than the current system that we pay right now. And let's not forget that the reason the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act is because they ruled that these monthly payments that every day Americans make is a tax and so while it may not seem like we pay that tax on April 15 th, we pay it every single month or we do pay at tax season if we don't buy you know these plans off of the exchange. So we're paying for this system. Americans have the sticker shock of health care as it is and we're also not talking about why aren't we incorporating the cost of all the funeral expenses of those who die because they can't afford access to health care. That is part of the cost of our system." (CNN's " Cuomo Primetime ," 8/8/18)

    • The Study Cited By Ocasio-Cortez Found That Medicare-For-All Would Actually Cost Nearly $40 Trillion More Than Our Current System And Would Definitely Not Be "Much Cheaper." "Some Democrats have seized on a reference in a study released by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, which receives some funding from the Koch Foundation, that a Medicare-for-all plan advanced by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) would reduce the country's overall level of health expenditures by $2 trillion from 2022 to 2031. That's because the Sanders plan would slash payments to providers by 40 percent. But the study makes clear that this is an unrealistic assumption and in fact the plan would raise government expenditures by $32.6 trillion over 10 years. Without the provider cuts, the additional federal budget cost would be nearly $40 trillion. So, no matter how you slice it, the study does not say it would be 'much cheaper' than the current system." (Glenn Kessler, "Fact-Checking Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Media Blitz," The Washington Post , 8/10/18)
Ocasio-Cortez Claimed That The Reason The Supreme Court Upheld The Affordable Care Act Was "Because They Ruled That These Monthly Payments That Every Day Americans Make Is A Tax." • The Supreme Court Decision Found The Financial Penalty For Not Purchasing Insurance Was A Tax, While Ocasio-Cortez Thought The Court Cited Monthly Premium Payments As A Tax. "This appears to be an example of not understanding policy nuances. In the 5-4 opinion written by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., the Affordable Care Act was deemed to be an appropriate exercise of the government's taxing power. But Roberts was not referring to the monthly premium payments, as Ocasio-Cortez claims. Instead, Roberts was referring to the individual mandate to buy insurance - and the requirement to pay an annual penalty when filing a tax return if one did not buy health insurance. 'The Affordable Care Act's requirement that certain individuals pay a financial penalty for not obtaining health insurance may reasonably be characterized as a tax,' Roberts wrote. 'Because the Constitution permits such a tax, it is not our role to forbid it, or to pass upon its wisdom or fairness.'" (Glenn Kessler, "Fact-Checking Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Media Blitz," The Washington Post , 8/10/18)
Ocasio-Cortez Has Been Critical Of Israel's Behavior Toward Palestine During Their Ongoing Conflict, But Admits She Is "Not The Expert On Geopolitics On This Issue"
Ocasio-Cortez Criticized Israel's "Occupation" Of Palestine, But When Asked To Expand On Her Thoughts She Said "I Am Not The Expert On Geopolitics On This Issue." MARGARET HOOVER: "Of course, the dynamic there, in terms of geopolitics and the war in the Middle East is very different than people expressing their first amendment right to protest." OCASIO-CORTEZ: "Well, yes, but I also think that what people are starting to see, at least in the occupation of Palestine is just an increasing crisis of humanitarian condition. And that to me is just where I tend to come from on this issue." HOOVER: "You use the term 'the occupation of Palestine,' what did you mean by that?" OCASIO-CORTEZ: "Oh, um, I think what I meant is like the settlements that are increasing in some of these areas in places where Palestinians are experiencing difficulty in access to their housing and homes." HOOVER: "Do you think you can expand on that?" OCASIO-CORTEZ: "I am not the expert on geopolitics on this issue." (PBS's " Firing Line ," 7/13/18)

Ocasio-Cortez Compared Hamas Rioters In Gaza To West Virginia Teachers Striking. ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ: "I think I was primarily compelled on moral grounds, because I could only imagine if 60 people were shot and killed in Ferguson or if 60 people were shot and killed in the West Virginia teacher strikes. The idea that we're not supposed to talk about people dying when they are engaging in political expression just really moved me, and running for office, seeing like the silence around this issue, has been a little interesting to me." (Glenn Greenwald, "Glenn Greenwald Interviews Democratic Primary Challenger Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Of New York," The Intercept , 6/12/18)

Ocasio-Cortez Has Been Critical Of Israel's Right To Defend Itself, Calling Shitty AMC Show Of Violent Hamas Protesters A "Massacre." "This is a massacre. I hope my peers have the moral courage to call it such. No state or entity is absolved of mass shootings of protesters. There is no justification. Palestinian people deserve basic human dignity, as anyone else. Democrats can't be silent about anymore." (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Twitter Feed , 5/14/18)

Ocasio-Cortez Wants To Abolish ICE, But Has Made Incorrect Statements Regarding How The Agency Runs And Has Made False Claims About The Agency's Protocol
Ocasio-Cortez Tweeted That "We Must Have The Moral And Political Courage To #AbolishICE." "ICE is operating exactly as designed when it rips screaming children from parents. That's exactly why we must abolish it. We MUST have the moral and political courage to #abolishICE. Weak half-measures do nothing. This is a defining moment of our time - the time to act is now." (Twitter Feed, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez , 6/19/18)

Ocasio-Cortez Claimed That ICE Had A "Bed Quota" Which Required The Agency To Fill 34,000 Beds With Detainees "Every Single Night." OCASIO-CORTEZ: "ICE is the only criminal investigative agency, the only enforcement agency in the United States, that has a bed quota. So ICE is required to fill 34,000 beds with detainees every single night and that number has only been increasing since 2009." (" Intercepted With Jeremy Scahill ," 5/30/18)

    • ICE Was Required To Have 34,000 Beds Available, Not Filled As Ocasio-Cortez Falsely Claimed, And The Language She Referenced Was Eliminated In 2017 And 2018 So It Is No Longer An Issue. "As our friends at PolitiFact documented, this is an urban legend. There is language in the 2016 appropriations bill that requires ICE to have 34,000 beds available - ICE 'shall maintain a level of not less than 34,000 detention beds through September 30, 2016' - but it is not required to fill them. The main point of such language, a version of which dated to 2009, is to make sure the money is not spent on something else. In 2014, in an exchange with Republican lawmakers, then-Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson testified that he did not view it as a mandate to fill the beds. 'That's beds, not people,' Johnson said. In any case, the language was eliminated in the 2017 and 2018 appropriations bills. So it's not even an issue anymore." • Natural-Born U.S. Citizens Cannot Have Their Citizenship Revoked. "Although rare, it is possible for a naturalized U.S. citizen to have his or her citizenship stripped through a process called 'denaturalization.' Former citizens who are denaturalized are subject to removal (deportation) from the United States. Natural-born U.S. citizens may not have their citizenship revoked against their will, but may choose to renounce their citizenship on their own." ("Can Your U.S. Citizenship Be Revoked?" So if you are about to be deported after being picked up by ICE, and you can prove someone ratted you out, isn’t that the same as flipping? It’s almost illegal they say.
