Ours happens in late January. There are counties farther south in Alabama where it happens in early February.
Heading on first true father son hunting long distance trip this week. My Dad, brother, uncle, cousin and 12 more heading to South Dakota pheasant hunting. More excited about the memories than the harvest. What it is all about.
I was hoping for one snow hunt but that can turn to rain quick. The forecast has shifted much colder over the past two days. I'm actually happy about it being in the high 30/mid 40s.
HaydenFoxScreamingEagle and I hunted in the snow in Indiana a couple of years ago. It was beautiful, but pretty miserable. I’d prefer cold and dry.
Dad already killed a 5,6,7, and 2 8s from this stand this year to tag out. This was after a cowhorn and smaller basket 8 walked this morning
One of my son's hunting buddies had never killed a buck so we took him hunting this weekend for a cull or management buck. After having to pass on multiple deer finally got him a very nice management on the last hunt Sunday right after a bunch of sleet came down on us. I ballparked him between around 135 (our management bucks are 4.5+ year old 8s & 9s that gross between 130-140). Once on the ground I was a little nervous I may have fucked up. I measured him in the woods at 139. Took him back to camp the guy that does the officially scoring got him at 139 6/8. My butt was puckering a lil towards the end as he was adding the numbers up, could have been a decent fine and loss of management privileges next year (although I think they would have probably let me slide as I wasn't deliberately shooting shit we aren't supposed to). No more hunting for us until December 8th when we go after the 12 point I posted earlier in thread. Spoiler
For those of you who hunt, I can't recommend these enough. https://www.soundgearhearing.com/ and they're having a Black Friday sale. After many years of hunting with no hearing protection, I noticed that my hearing isn't what it used to be, so I got a pair and started using them this year. They're comfortable, they amplify the sound around you so you can hear subtle sounds like a deer approaching or carry on a normal conversation, and it makes a gunshot sound like someone lit a fire cracker about 20 yards away.
The ad on the home page says it's $150 off for a pair of the instant fit, which are the ones I have. That would put them at $250. I found some on Amazon before the hunting season started that ran around $280 or so, so this is an even better deal. Just make sure you choose the "Instant Fit-Shooter" and not the "Industrial".
I’ve used my Peltor ears for quite some time now. Under 50 bucks and their warranty/customer service are stellar Peltor Sport RangeGuard RG-OTH-4 Electronic Hearing Protector, Ear Protection, NRR 21 dB, Ideal for Shooting and Hunting
Rifle season opens this weekend. If I can get some meat in the freezer I’m telling myself I’ll go back and try to take one with my bow. Can’t wait to see a nice 8 point at 70 yards in December.
I also use Peltor but I splurged for the fancy tactical bluetooth ones. I use them almost everyday listening to music and podcasts or whatever. Also shooting.
Tomorrow is opening day of rifle season. Got a buck and doe tag, last year tagged out on both in 2 hours, hoping for some of that same luck.
Killed a big sow this morning. Tracked her through an intense thicket with briars and shit for 150 yards. I found her dead 15 yards from the road.
I think I want a new scope for my .270. I don't go enough to warrant spending $300+ on one. Anybody seen any decent black Friday/cyber Monday deals?
Also something to consider is Vortex. Their glass is great and their warranty is the best you could get. You’ll literally never need to buy another scope.
Whoever was wanting the Nikon Prostaff, Basspro running them for $99, cybermonday https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/Nikon-BDC-Rifle-Scope
Heading out to a buddy's land in the Blue Ridge Mtns this weekend, Saturday will be my first time deer hunting in a long while. I am excite
Might have a chance to hunt down in South Georgia this weekend if the weather cooperates. Should be a good time with their rut coming in or already going.
Got a doe yesterday, smaller than I’d have liked but I was pretty set on taking something. Didn’t see any bucks but saw about 7 does over the course of the day. Going to make some crock pot stew tonight and then freeze the rest of the meat. Feels good to be back boys
Popped a doe about two hours after taking a shit in the woods. Was probably less than 100 yards from my shooting house.
Figured I had hogs tearing up my feeders...I was wrong. Also, had this guy today about 175 out, but he was to my left and I am left handed.
