Found this just looking for books similar to Sanderson. Everywhere I read about it raved, so I tried it out. Along the same vein as Wheel of Time. It's a trilogy but the last book is due late next year (author said he's turned it in, so not in purgatory like Kingkiller). Really enjoyed it. Starting the second one now.

Nice I’ll add it to the list but will probably wait until the 3rd book is out

I’ve read the back cover of that book. Guy said he was big time influenced by Mistborn. So probably Sanderson-esque.

Edit: Whoops, just saw the reply. Guess that confirms it.

    40. How To Lie With Statistics -- Darrell Huff (6/10)
I like to read books that make me more savvy about stats and social science research like this, Everybody Lies, The Signal and the Noise, etc. Human beings are inherently susceptible to being misled by statistics; statistical thinking doesn't come naturally to us like some other types of mathematical reasoning. This book is from 1954 and is considered a "classic" in this field. Your college professor might have told you to read it.

I have read my most ever books in a single year, although many of them are less books and more short stories - ie Louis L’Amour novels.

Probably have 2 more books to end the year as well.

    65. Memorial Day (Mitch Rapp #5) by Vince Flynn (9/10)

Broken Earth Trilogy - Liked this a lot. Im not a huge fantasy guy. This was good. Lots of social commentary that was clever. Good story building, but like most Trilogies - First book was the best. It should have been a duology. A lot felt like filler but still pretty good.

How To Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression and Transcendence - Heard about this on the Best Of 2018 podcasts by NYT. Ive always had a passing interest about psychedelics. Micro dosing, ect. But have never tried it. I still dont know that I would. I think I would have a difficult time w it. I learned a shit load stuff, and the biggest takeaway is the government needs to let scientist research the benefits of taboo drugs like these and weed ect.

The Parking Lot Attendant - Heard about this on the same NYT pod. It's a great quick read. Almost more of a novella. About an Ethiopian-American girl who befriends this parking lot attendant. The guy is a bit of mob boss of sorts. He takes to her, looks after her ect. Her father is not a fan. It kind of reminded me of Goodfellas in a sort of way. Cool story, w a decent plot twist.

Memorial Day - Just am loving these Mitch Rapp books. If you liked 24, you'll love these books. All action, a bit ridiculous plot but good times.

Im about 2/3rds through. The just made through the other side of Moria. So far, I think it's pretty close to what I remember from the movie. It's been a couple years since Ive watched.

It's good, but it seems pretty formulaic. Here's an obstacle, and a journey and this is how they go through it. I enjoy the back story more than the actual quest so far.

I'll definitely read the hobbit, because I dont think Ive read that since my dad read it to me as a kid.

That will wrap it up for me in 2018. I didn't quite hit my goal of 60, but that's mainly because I read (and re-read) a lot of really long books this year. I think by word count I probably read just as much, if not more, than previous years.

I enjoyed the books, but kind of wish I didnt see the movies or knew much about them. The movies did a pretty good job by the books, so while there was some extra depth to the books, It wasnt as enthralling otherwise. Im also not the biggest fantasy guy, outside of ASOIAF. I dont regret reading them. I enjoyed them and felt like they were a must read for an avid reader so at least I knocked them off my list :idk:

    44. The English Assassin (Gabriel Allon #2) by Daniel Silva 8/10 Really enjoying this the beginning of this series and I'm sure I will get far into it in the upcoming year.

Did not reach my goal of 52 books for the year but still improved from last year's total of 40, and read around 6,000 more pages this year as well so I think I can get more read this year. Need to figure something out for November and December because I get very little reading done in those months and feel very burnt out by the end of the year and don't do much reading it seems.

    37. 1491: New Relevations From The Americas Before Columbus (Charles C. Mann) - 8.5/10 - Was going to post this in the 2019 thread but I did finish it a couple of weeks ago. Very enjoyable read; it's easy to see why it is so popular. Some of the information shared really shatters old myths, for example Mesoamerican population estimates before Columbus' arrival. I look forward to reading 1493 at some point.

Was hoping to finish the Ambrose book before the end of the year but having a colicky newborn really slowed my reading pace. I imagine my output will be a bit lower in 2019. Might set my book goal around 25-30 for next year and be happy if I blow past it.

63 for 2018. Slightly less than my goodreads profile says because of how I documented some of the Sherlock Holmes short stories early in the year.

Really enjoyed all the finance and economic books I read towards the end of the year and that’s a trend that will continue early into 2019.

Earth was by Jon Stewart. While there were laugh out loud funny parts, I never understood the “point” of the book. If it was purely humor, it missed the mark a lot of the time. Seemed like a book without a soul.

Malazan Book of the Fallen is surpassing ASOIAF for me, I think. Read 4-8 in 2018, will definitely finish in 2019.

What if? is a great book, written by XKCD guy, I enjoyed it, but by the end I was just ready to be done with it, so lowered my rating.

Fools run is an old hacker novel that was predictable and not that interesting, but not awful.

Finished the year with 65, a new personal record by a big margin (2017 - 43). Set out to do 52 in 52, and it changed what books I grabbed from the library/my reading queue. I grabbed way more “short books” just because they were short and didn’t get into longer ones as much just to accomplish my goal.

This year, I’m aiming for fewer books. So, we’ll go for 40. I also want to write more. I have 3 outlines written and 3 starting chapters to books I will almost assuredly never finish and or never publish.

I just finished Dune as an audio book. Does anyone know why they used two different voices for the Baron’s character? At first I thought the first voice guy might have died or quit, but they kept switching between the two and I was curious if there’s a reason I didn’t know.

This guy is one of my favorite painters/visual artists and this is the book where he lays out the manifesto of his art. He was one of the earliest abstract painters and a lot of his theories have to do with how individual colors can affect a person and how visual art relates to music. Pretty esoteric stuff but I really like his art and I was intrigued by the connection with music thing.

    How’d you like Great Expectations?

I hated it in high school, but think it might be good to give it another shot 25yrs later.

I loved it. It’s a dark story altogether, but I think it is a very well put together novel full of foreshadowing and depth. I’ve only read two other novels by Dickens - A Christmas Carol which I really liked and David Copperfield that was just ok for me. Great Expectations is easily my favorite of the three. Hoping to read A Tale of Two Cities this year after I get through some other books on my to read list.
