Anyone been to Beaver Creek recently? Headed up there in a couple of weeks for a long weekend. Snow reports look good online.
Nice, thanks. I'm planning a trip to fly in to SLC for Snowbird, drive to JH and fly home. I've never done JH before so I'm really looking forward to it.
It was last week but... https://www.powder.com/stories/news/where-its-dumping-wednesday-california-utah-colorado-and-japan/
Shot in the dark here. We are planning on spending January/February 2020 in Big Sky. Any leads on long term rentals. Prefer private party rental to agency to avoid fees.
what is everyone's go to ski goggle? i bought my girlfriend a pair of the Smith I/O chromapop for christmas and now im jealous because they're much better than my pair, which fogs too much and doesn't have interchangeable lenses. thoughts?
Have you ever tried sunglasses? I like the peripheral vision you get without goggles and don’t have fogging issues. Only break the goggles out in low visibility conditions.
i have but i ski fairly windy locations like A-basin and loveland enough that i'll trade a little peripheral vision for the extra wind protection that goggles offer
Gotcha. Well my goggles are the smith chromapops and seems like you already know they do the trick. Sorry to be of no help.
I have Smith goggles. They are fine. I have sensitive eyes so I could never dream of wanting to ski without goggles.
I ride the Basin weekly and have the Smith I/O Chromapop and they're great for a decent to bluebird day. Just make sure you get a flat light lens for the basin as you know how visibility can be pretty terrible up there.
Chromapop is the truth, and the two lenses with the I/O series is great. I have the I/O 7, the storm lens keeps the bumps visible in flat light.
I don't owe you nachos, do I? How did you like the mountain? I'm headed out Saturday for a few days. I'm excited about the new Ramcharger lift. I might actually ski the front of the mountain a little just to enjoy the heated seats.
Sierras got slammed, it's awesome. Snowpack at like 125 percent of normal I think, it's gonna benefit the whole state. We got 28-36" in the last 7 days at Mountain High in SoCal. 18" of that in 24 hours. It's gonna be a good week.
Ramcharger also has much shorter lines. This time, I learned a nice littttle trick I'm sure you also know, but it is possible to use the ski school magic carpet, that will get you high enough to ski down to the Explorer Lift, which allows you to then ski down to the Challenger Lift, and from there you can pretty much get to anywhere on the mountain without having to worry about the lines and crowds around Swift Current. Nope. You don't owe me any nachos. Good call. I'm heading to Paris on Friday for the weekend, and then going to ski the Alps for the first time. We are going to Chamonix. Looking forward to it.
I have a lot of recs for Paris if you're interested. PM your preferred email address and I can send the dining guide my wife put together.
I bought a pair of Giro Axis this year and they have been great. Wide peripheral vision too which is key
For those who might be interested Brighton (Utah) has received 63 inches of fresh powder in this storm, with more on the way. Solitude and Snowbird received 40 inches.
Had quite the 'ski-tastrophe' this last weekend. A friend of mine asked if I wanted to head up to Bend (Mt Bachelor) on friday for a day of skiing on saturday with two of his buddies I didnt know, in their car, who haven't skied in like 7 years. First red flag. But I said yes. I usually drive my car up but I didnt have my snow tires on yet so I said I would ride with them. So they come pick me up and his car is packed full non-skiing junk, shoes, school bags, mcdonalds bags, climbing gear etc. He didn't clean out his car or even have a ski rack. Had to ride for 3 hours with skis everywhere inside the car. It's now obvious to me these guys are ski trip amateurs. Second red flag. We get to Bend, hit up the local bars for awhile and the driver of the car is hitting it off with some local girl and they bail together. The rest of us (married) men head to our hotel after awhile. We wake up the next morning and I'm getting all geared up, the driver knocks on our door and says he left his jacket, with the keys in it at the bar from the night before. Fuck. We decide to wait till 10, when the bar opens to go get his keys and head up skiing. Bar opens, no jacket or keys. Double fuck. At this point we have called off skiing and are just trying to figure out how to get home. No spare keys, no locksmith can make a key (chipped key), AAA can't tow it, etc. Just a fucking mess. We ended up staying an extra night, hitting up the strip club and rented a car to drive back home the next morning. The dude who lost the keys ended up puking out the window the entire drive back into town. Our car was smeared with vomit down the entire outside of it and it was a perfect metaphor for our weekend. Shitshow. Got my studs on now and will be heading up w/ a friend on Sunday to shred. Moral of the story: Don't ski with amateurs. They will find a way to ruin a good time.
Mountain High was sick today, best day of the season for sure. The storms washed out most of the smog down in LA, so you could see the Pacific and Catalina Island from the top of one of the runs.
Need suggestions on new skis. Bough Nordica Enforcers @185 cm 2 years ago and the top delaminates from the cores this weekend. East coast skier that goes out west once a year. Advanced/expert. Generally try to find the hardest way down the mountain whether glades bumps or steeps. Right now I’m looking at Fischer ranger 98 @ 188, head kore 99 @ 189 and the blizzard bonafide @ 187
Headed that way next weekend for the first time this season - probably skiing Alpine Meadows. Hate going Presidents Day Weekend but it makes the cross country trip easier. How’s the snow?
It's great, most recent and upcoming storms have been cold so the snow is a bit lighter than the usual Sierra cement. Alpine is a lot of fun when fully open. For long groomers it's better than Squaw.
Ha... Not cool. I rode all day Thursday but yeah, rolling blackout in summit County sucked on Friday. Lifties thought Breck was done for the day by 930. I drove to a basin but the parking lots were full so I went to keystone. Finally got on the hill around 12. And then someone told me Breck was running by 1030 lol.. Still a great trip.
Got in a fun storm day at Squaw on Saturday, then had to go find a hotel in Reno until roads opened again to get back across the crest. I think it was worth it for a few of those turns I had, plus a fun fall when I didn't see a gully I went over in the low visibility. Falling into the soft stuff great.
Cold af and dumping snow up in the PNW Casades. Gusts were hitting 25 mph and windchill was at -14 at times, still a great powder day yesterday. Going to head up again next weekend to 4+ feet of new snow
Chamonix is phenomenal. The town itself is probably the best ski town I’ve experienced. Amazing little city with great aprés and also great food and apparently nightlife. Probably best to get a guide for skiing however. The skiing here is far less forgiving than what I’m used to. Anyway, had to take a lesson today to make sure I was ok to ski Vallee Blanche tomorrow. I passed and now I’m a little
The PNW has been getting absolutely blasted during the month of February. It's been super great and not just for skiing. Our snowpacks are expected to reach normal levels (we were at 50% at the end of Jan) and its easing us out of the 'severe drought' category that much of the region has been in for the past few years.
Central Oregon has 50" in the last 3 days. Getting dumped on in Eugene (400' elevation) Gonna need to head up this weekend if the passes are open.
Finally pulled the trigger on Enforcer 100s, if they are mounted in time it’ll be a fun weekend at Squaw.
Amount of snow that fell this weekend and past couple weeks has been amazing at the resorts (had a blast at Copper last weekend, Union Meadows and Resolution Bowl we’re off the charts) but created some dangerous conditions outside the ropes. This is a pants pooping scenario.
It was well worth it today. I left my place in Silverthorne at 6:30 and waited. My buddy on ski patrol dropped the ropes to the beavers and we got first tracks. All time runs through the trees.
It was my first time in powder. I couldn't believe how smooth it felt. Also hit my first blues. Couldn't feel a thing when I crashed.
We just got slammed at Mtn High. with 18-20" overnight, out of nowhere. Usually we're wrapping things up around this time of year, we'll probably be open til mid April at this rate.
We were only supposed to get 3-5" overnight. Said what the fuck and did a double take when I opened my door this morning. I live above Mtn High, I think this more than 18-20". Best day of the season, and it was so unexpected.
In Breckenridge currently. I’m not a good skier but I respect those who can more than I do the troops.
