    recruiting notes

This time of year, every day brings new revelations, new names, visit-booking news, and discussions related to how those developments may impact Notre Dame recruiting.

In that, plenty of news and notes can be missed within the onslaught of information.

Through recent happenings, I’ve gathered notes and thoughts for this review, each of the ten topics discussed below.

    CRYSTAL BALL PICKS
I’ve yet to place many Crystal Ball Predictions in the 2020 class. For me, I take a fairly conservative approach to my predictions. However, this doesn’t mean that I don’t believe Notre Dame is in great shape with certain prospects.

In the discussion of athletes I’m close to predicting to Notre Dame, the following are on my list.

    Jimmy Christ (Photo: 247Sports)
Sources have confirmed that Jimmy Christ is a top priority for Notre Dame. Staff wants him in South Bend in a big way.

I’ve done fairly extensive reporting on Christ early in the cycle, an initial interview with Christ upon adding his offer (click here for that story) and an in-depth interview with his new head coach (click here for that article).

I do wonder if his bother’s playing football at in-state programs in Virginia and Virginia Tech or his loaded offer list which includes Clemson, Michigan, Oklahoma, Ohio State, and others will lead to a dogfight-style recruitment.

Even so, Christ has continuously expressed a serious interest in Notre Dame when we’ve been in touch in recent weeks, his visit seems to have a sense of urgency around it.

I like the way this one is trending early.

Jalen McMillan (Photo: Brandon Huffman, 247Sports)

Next to Jordan Johnson in Notre Dame’s top priority wide receiver prospects, Jalen McMillan is as exciting as they come when we’re talking about young pass-catchers.

Part of me thinks he may have an even higher upside than Johnson, his ability to elevate and fight for the football is outstanding.

In speaking with his head coach (click here for that article), additional sources close to him, and sources around Notre Dame, my trigger finger is getting itchy related to predicting him to the Irish.

Kalel Mullings (Photo: Tom Loy — @TomLoy247, 247Sports)

Injury concerns and position fit questions aside, Kalel Mullings is among the closest things to an exemplary fit for Notre Dame.

From one of the top private schools in the Northeast, the Top 100 prospect would likely find a fairly seamless transition to life at Notre Dame.

Michigan, Clemson, Boston College, and others will bring a fight. And it’s difficult to know which direction Notre Dame running back recruiting will trend with a new assistant coach leading that effort while several names are in the hat to fill those spots.

Still, I really like Notre Dame’s odds with this compelling Boston-area product.

Click here for my recent interview with Mullings.

    STANDOUT FITS
We talk constantly about ‘fits’ for Notre Dame - a central discussion in determining the success of each recruitment.

In the 2020 class, there are several prospects who I’ve spoken to who standout as excellent fits for the program, just like many we covered in the 2019 cycle. Athletes like Jacob Lacey, Kyle Hamilton, and Quinn Carroll come to mind.

Here are three prospects who jump out at me as no-brainer examples of Notre Dame student-athletes.

Elijah Gaines: Receiving the most votes by his teammates for the captaincy at Episcopal as an underclassman, and that includes Litchfield Ajavon, Elijah Gaines is a mature athlete from Queens, New York who thrives in the classroom at an ideal program fit for the Irish.

Kalel Mullings: From a small private school with similar history and traditions to Notre Dame, Mullings immediately stood out to me as an athlete who would fit right in with the Irish. His maturity and focus on both academics and athletics bring the notion that Notre Dame must be in the discussion.

    What Mullings said on Sunday…

“Who wouldn’t need Notre Dame in the picture and definitely consider them and definitely have strong views about them?”

A.J. Henning: A young prospect out of Illinois with a glowing personality and the type of high-achievement attitude you see at Notre Dame. With connections to Houston Griffith, Miles Boykin, and others, there is no doubt that Henning would be an excellent fit for the Irish.

    WIDE RECEIVER RECRUITING

The essential goal of Notre Dame’s recruiting class is clear, adding top-shelf talent with Jordan Johnson, Jalen McMillan, and A.J. Henning being the top three targets currently.

In doing some digging on this topic, adding as many as four wide receivers is definitely possible while those top three targets are very much prioritized.

I expect the wide receiver board to continue to expand through the off-season and into the fall. But right now, it feels like a crap shoot in determining which wide receivers outside of the top three will be firmly in the discussion in the future.

Although on paper you would think John Humphreys would end up out West, Notre Dame appears to be in the mix for the big-target wide receiver - expecting an official visit.

Nebraska wide receiver Xavier Watts is an athlete the Irish think highly of, a prospect who tells me he plans to take multiple trips to South Bend after loving his Stanford game visit in September. A March visit is being planned.

And out of the program which produced Isaac Rochell, Eagle’s Landing Christian 6-foot-4, 200-pound pass-catcher Justin Robinson appears to be a fit for the Irish even if his recruitment is in the early stages. He’ll visit Notre Dame soon.

There are more names in the discussion currently and more will be added in the future. For now, Notre Dame is on the right path at this position.

    EXPANDING OPTIONS AT RB

The hottest topic in current Notre Dame recruiting circles, unlike last class, there appears to be a solid group of options for new running backs coach Lance Taylor to develop.

It’s my opinion that a two-back class would be smart, although the large group of backs with three or four years of eligibility may say otherwise. A two-back situation of a top-ranked athlete with game-breaking speed along with a power back seems ideal.

Multiple backs who fit the bigger back/power back category are clear to see, Tirek Murphy Jr. (6-foot, 221), Kalel Mullings (6-2, 220), and possibly Cullen Coleman (6-3, 230), all having serious interest in Notre Dame.

Five-star Chris Tyree headlines the other category, an athlete Notre Dame will pursue to the fullest extent. Another elite back in Bijan Robinson is certainly in the discussion while all-purpose back JuTahn McClain will visit this weekend after another Midwest all-purpose back in Mike Drennen II visited recently as well.

Of course, Reggie Love is another back worth considering while it’ll be interesting to see which other backs will enter the discussion. Undoubtedly, Seth McGowan is an exciting running back with every-down capability while others will surely surface.

You have to like the early options and urgency placed on recruiting running back.

For Tim Prister’s film evaluations of various running backs recently, click here.

    FREAKISH LINEBACKERS
Although I think just one linebacker in the 2020 class makes sense and I have predicted Cody Simonto Notre Dame, there are a few freakishly athletic linebackers who I believe would be take-no-matter-what types.

    Two stand out.

Have you seen Jordan Botelho rush the quarterback? If not, be sure to check out his film (click here).

Yes, there’s a decent chance Botelho would play drop end at Notre Dame if he were to choose the Irish. He stated as much when I spoke with him upon his offer announcement. But his potential at linebacker is just as compelling.

A big-bodied, ultra-aggressive athlete from Hawaii with real interest in Notre Dame, Botelho is one of my favorite overall prospects in the class. Full stop.

Would be an instant upgrade to Notre Dame’s pass rush and toughness up front.

Brutally undervalued as a three-star, in my opinion, Mohammed is a freak athlete with excellent speed and quickness on defense and multiple positions offensively.

This is a gap-shooter with violent intentions on the football field, a special athlete who reels in over-the-shoulder passes on offense while boasting fluid hips and the type of athleticism that could develop into quality pass coverage ability.

My only issue is not knowing exactly where I like him most. With his outstanding downhill nature and heavy-hitter label, I could see a future at mike linebacker but his fluid style and coverage upside lends to the notion that rover linebacker would be a good fit, especially with his 6-foot-3 stature with great length.

Regardless, this is one of the most high-potential linebackers on the board regardless of his ranking. And like Botelho, Kaba would be an instant upgrade to Notre Dame’s pass rush given his talent and defensive end background.

    BRAIDEN MCGREGOR

Braiden McGregor (Photo: Tom Loy — @TomLoy247, 247Sports)
I figured I’d craft a response to the uproar of speculation and concerns regarding the recruitment of Braiden McGregor.

First, I’ve seen only a select few defensive ends recruited as heavily as Braiden McGregor over the last few years - Brian Kelly attending his basketball games while both the defensive coordinator and defensive line coaching dropping by Port Huron Northern during their top priority pursuit.

Recently, McGregor was able to visit Michigan twice due to it’s close proximity. And this morning, a source with knowledge of the recruitment told me that if Notre Dame was only a short drive from McGregor, the four-star D-end would have also visited Notre Dame twice recently.

McGregor is key to his varsity basketball team and is focusing on that season as such. Once his season is over, he’ll take an important trip to South Bend where he’ll get one-on-one time with Kelly, Lea, Elston, and others while he’ll also hit several schools in the South.

Michigan is and always was a big player for his pledge. But so is Notre Dame.

This one will take some time to come to a conclusion. Until those visits take place, any outlandish speculation isn’t warranted.

    CAM LARGE

    Cam Large (Photo: 247Sports)

A two-way athlete heading to South Bend this weekend out of Dedham (Mass.) Noble and Greenough School, I spoke with Cam Large on Monday evening.

Large is coveted nationally as both a tight end and defensive end, owning offers from Boston College, Duke, Georgia Tech, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and others.

Here’s what Large had to say about Notre Dame…

“It’s one of the greatest college football programs of all time,” Large said. “It’s an awesome school too, academically, and has a great all-around network.

“It’s a great way to set yourself up for the next 40 years of your life along with playing great football.”

On which position the schools on his offer list are recruiting him to play…

“It’s probably 60-percent tight end and 40-percent D-end,” Large said. “(Notre Dame) sees me more as a tight end, that’s what they said. But they said I could also play D-end - outside linebacker for them. But they say I really fit the mold as a balance tight end that they’ve used in the past.”

Large’s head coach Panos Voulgaris, who coached Litchfield Ajavon until the 2018 season, had this to say about Large…

“Cam is a stud,” Voulgaris said. “Physical and tough, just like Litchfield but at another position.”

    DEONTAE CRAIG
    [IMG]
Deontae Craig (Photo: Matt Weaver, 247Sports)
I took a close look at Deontae Craig this week, an athlete I’ve been in touch with for months. For my review, click here.

In speaking with Craig, a strong interest in Notre Dame was clear. He’d mentioned that Notre Dame has always been one of his favorite football teams from a fan standpoint, and his confidence in Mike Elston should play an important role.

Of course, Notre Dame camps at Culver, where he plays his football and basketball. He also mentioned training at the same facility as Jaylon Smith growing up, knowing the Notre Dame great from his young athletic career.

Having been to Notre Dame twice in recent months, a return trip isn’t set but will definitely be planned soon.

“Obviously, I’m going to think about every school (that has offered) and consider all my options, but Notre Dame - like I said earlier - has been one of my favorite schools. So, it’s going to be up there,” Craig said.

“I’ll definitely be making another trip up there.”

    STANFORD VS. NOTRE DAME
The Irish vs. Cardinal recruiting battles are always a prime discussion. How did these two matchup in the 2019 class?

As far as athletes Stanford signed which were recruited heavily by the Irish, cornerback Salim Turner-Muhammed, linebacker Tristan Sinclair, offensive tackle Walter Rouse, and defensive end Aeneas DiCosmo were great additions for the Cardinal.

On the other end, Stanford was gunning for Zeke Correll, Kyren Williams, Kyle Hamilton, K.J. Wallace, J.D. Bertrand, and others.

With Stanford also signing a few which Notre Dame couldn’t get on campus, Elijah Higgins and Austin Jones included, it feels like Stanford won this round of recruiting battles.

However, it’s worth noting that Notre Dame signed nine total four-star linemen while Stanford only signed eight four-stars in total. In fact, Notre Dame signed double the amount of total 247Sports Composite four-stars as compared to Stanford.

Stanford may have won more head-to-head battles, but Notre Dame swept the floor with its rival on a class-to-class level.

    SCHOLARSHIP DISTRIBUTION
    This is only speculation.

In my article related to predicting the amount of scholarship space in the 2020 class, the result of that breakdown was that it was essentially impossible to churn out a number, but 18 to 21 felt like a possibility.

If the number ended up being 21, what would an ideal scholarship distribution look like?

Below is how I would spread those scholarships.

    QB: Drew Pyne

    RB: 2

    WR: 4

    TE: Kevin Bauman, Michael Mayer

    OT: 2

    OG/C: 1

    DE: Alexander Ehrensberger + 2

    DT: Aidan Keanaaina + 1

    LB: 1

    CB: 2

    S: 1

For me, I think Notre Dame should seize the opportunity to load up on playmakers offensively, already having one of the top QB’s in the nation and two of the top three tight ends secured.

Adding a wide receiver class similar to the 2018 group (but possibly even more substantial) along with a smash & dash combo at running back would be largely beneficial.

Of course, investing five scholarships along the defensive line with two cornerbacks feels like the best way to fill in the gaps.

Again, this is pure speculation and only a personal opinion based on a number that is nearly selected at random. Would love to hear your thoughts on distributing the scholarships.

Loy posted this on Buchner today...he might be the very best QB in 2021. If he recovers from his ACL injury, he is going to be amazing. Pyne and Buchner is back to back classes is going to be amazing

A new 247Sports Crystal Ball pick is in for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. As always, Irish Illustrated provides the background information behind the pick and what went into it.

Here’s the latest on this big-time talent.

I’ve been close to picking Notre Dame for La Jolla (Calif.) The Bishop’s School four-star class of 2021 quarterback Tyler Buchner for a long time and earlier this week I decided to pull the trigger for the Fighting Irish.

First Look: How New Socialists Will Most Likely Go After Your Money
    STANSBERRY RESEARCH

Tommy Rees, special teams coach Brian Polian and offensive coordinator Chip Long, the 6-2, 200-pounder couldn’t feel like a bigger priority at this point. Rees has done a terrific job of developing this relationship and showing how interested the entire staff is, despite Buchner's season-ending injury this year. People questioned Rees when he was hired, but he's clearly improving the play of the quarterbacks and he's recruiting at a high level. That position is in good hands with him. Also, kudos to head coach Brian Kelly for making the decision to head to The Bishop’s School this offseason to check in with Buchner, make an appearance at the school, and show how important he is to the entire coaching staff.

In addition, my pick went in following a recent conversation with Buchner heading into this weekend’s visit to Notre Dame. You get a clear vibe that the Fighting Irish have done a great job here and he is feeling the love. He also is of the belief that Notre Dame would be a great spot for him as a player, a person and a student. He is a tremendous fit for what Notre Dame looks for in its student-athletes and I don’t see him being afraid to leave home for the opportunities offered in South Bend.

Also, this pick comes in following a conversation from a trusted source. It’s recruiting and things could change quickly, especially when talking about an elite talent like Buchner, but my source couldn’t be more confident in where Notre Dame stands at this point.

“Notre Dame is definitely going to be tough to beat,” said a source. “His relationship with the staff is really strong. I'm confident that they are on top right now heading into this visit. I think he wants to visit Stanford right after this weekend, so I wouldn’t expect him to do anything before that.”

    5COMMENTS
Now it’s up to Notre Dame to close the deal and get this one done. If he is truly set on visiting Stanford and potentially a few others before making a decision, that will make it more difficult for the Fighting Irish to eventually secure his commitment. Notre Dame would love to close this one down this weekend, even if it’s done behind the scenes. However, if they don’t believe he is close to making a decision, it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise to see the staff extend one or two new offers at the position. The names involved for that offer likely include J.J. McCarthy, Jake Rubley and Drake Maye.

Per 247Sports, Buchner is the No. 49 overall player in the country, No. 2 pro-style quarterback in the land, although he is very athletic and an excellent straight-line runner, and the No. 2 recruit in California from the class of 2021.

They had a good run in football in late 90s. Shane Walton went there and they had a good fullback that I believe went to Harvard at same time.

Of the private schools they usually recruit the least but they've even stepped that up over last few years
