Spoiler When they are at Hayes house when they are old, he has Roland look out the window at the black car parked across the street. They both go out and Hayes hits the tail light with the bat and Roland snaps a pic of the license plate. Then, Hayes goes into one of his episodes and is alone. Was he alone the whole time? Roland was never with him apparently?
The reporter makes a strong case for season 3 case being linked to a child abduction and pedophile ring that was aligned with season 1 case. I think he remembers some of the case. Its why he avoids confirming what he knows to the female reporter when she seems to be onto Hoyt and the political figures involved in the case. I almost feel like he wants his partner to put the details together so he can come forward to out Hoyt and the political figures to insure his son and daughter don't face any blow back because whatever happens in that car with Hoyt (we probably find out on Sunday) scares the shit out of him to the point he drops the case entirely.
Thats a good question. I was really thrown off how this all unfolds. And I really have no clue how it ends up. Sunday is gonna be jam packed and I can't wait.
And she was dismissed by Hayes who had brought up the same to Harris James during that brutal barn scene 25 years prior. https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywoo...eason-3-theories-debunked-season-1-connection But maybe there’s a twist on a twist on a twist.
http://collider.com/true-detective-season-3-episode-7-interview-daniel-sackheim/#hbo I’d be remiss if I didn’t ask about the other big surprise in Episode 7, which is the allusion to Rust and Marty’s investigation from Season 1, which I guess confirms that these two seasons take place in the same universe. That was really fun for me, just as a fan of the show. What was your reaction reading that, and did you have many discussions with Nic about it? SACKHEIM: Well, I can say that there was a lot of discussion about it. I think it’s important to understand the context in which that reveal was made, which is that it was being brought forward by this kind of documentary filmmaker who’s doing a true crime TV series. So, there is a bit of conjecture on her part, and there might be validity to this, or there might not. So the audience will find out whether that’s true or not. But I do want to keep it in its proper context. Sure, sure. So was there debate over whether to include that kind of connection at all? Or was it just over connecting into this case? SACKHEIM: No, there was never a debate about it. I mean, obviously there’s certainly a resemblance between the dolls that do appear in this season and the dolls that appeared in Season 1. But how that connection works out, I can’t really say. You’re just going to have to wait to see. It will become really clear what the connection is, if any, in the finale. But I wouldn’t want to spoil it for anyone beyond that.
Disappointing isn't really the word because it's been an entertaining and extremely well acted season but I'm hoping that there's more to the resolution. Not necessarily that it has to be a huge conspiracy connected to S1 but if it's as open and shut as Hoyt buying his daughter a new child (which has been speculated since episode 2) that's going to be a bit of a letdown IMO
Hope we get some resolution on what happened to Amelia and why Hays had a falling out with his daughter. Hope I didn't miss that if it already was explained.
I don't think we missed it. I think it has something to do with when he dropped her off at school. BTW, that appears to be a 4th timeline, because he is grey but not as grey as in the present obviously.
I think so because he says "what am I going to do with out you" to his daughter which makes me think the Amelia is dead by then.
Yeah. It could be as simple as the daughter just doesn't want to see her Dad losing it and moved away? Not sure.
I agree an anti-climactic finish would be a bit of a let-down but hopeful some farcical wrinkle doesn’t spoil a pretty good season
I think this line of thinking is correct. He may be showing signs of losing it mentally and so she doesn't want to go to school and leave him alone. I don't think going to school is what makes his daughter head to the other side of the country... She finds out something about the case that sends her packing I would guess.
Stream of consciousness post after just watching it... So if he won't cooperate w/ the reporter lady, assuming out of fear of Hoyt, what is he doing the interviews for? Hoping she will drop some missing piece? And what piece is missing...he seems to have it pretty much solved. There has to be something in the next episode that gives his motivation for opening himself up to criticism and reasoning for doing these interviews Hayes doesn't have long left. Feel like he'd be better off showing his cards, but maybe he is worried about retribution on his family.
Also, I wonder what the guys were thinking the end game was with that interrogation... even if Harris talked and told them everything, what were they gonna do, let him go? And have the wrath of the police dept and Hoyt on their ass? They pretty much had to kill him the moment he got dragged out there. It's TV though and sometimes you gotta just suspend belief. Great episode though
Curious how Hoyt knew about the interrogation unless after they came to the office and Purcell was killed, Hoyt had someone tailing Hays and Roland.
Spoiler Maybe Roland is in on it (or Hoyt has something on him, more likely) , and killed Harris to silence him, then told Hoyt about it. In the last few episodes Roland has seemed anxious to stop Hayes and nip the investigation in the bud....
Perhaps awhile ago Roland agreed/decided to just look the other way and got a nice promotion to lieutenant. So maybe not totally in on it but until his friend Tom was murdered not seriously interested in pursuing it either.
They director kept cutting to a long-angle shot during the traffic stop. I couldn’t tell if it was artistic license or an intimation that someone was watching them.
There was also that scene where Hays was calling in flight plans on Roland’s badge number and the operator took a long, awkward pause. Maybe Hays triggered someone on the Hoyt payroll during the after-investigation investigation that tipped Hoyt off that Hays wasn’t going to let it go. Or maybe it was just a guess based off James’ disappearance and Hays’ history.
I mentioned this to my wife during the last episode and she said "you still miss them?" Every day, honey. Every day.
I bet she left, he never read her book. Although they do talk like she died. The story overall seems pretty cut and dry. Hope for a big twist.
I'm pretty sure she died at some point. The son said the last time Hays saw Rebecca was at her funeral.
I remember that, but I believe she left him. She was a hippie and getting some good info on her own. They alluded to how she was starting to work on another book but stuff got in the way. Either way I'm more interested in what happened to Rebecca and Amelia.
Agreed. I feel like there is gonna be a big twist in here somewhere with either Rebecca or Amelia... maybe both, because they've been very cryptic about them so far.
i guess to be more specific, i am curious what led to the rebecca/hayes falling out. they're clearly estranged and i would be pretty disappointed if we dont get any closure on that
It will be a miracle if they resolve all the shit that we'd like to be resolved in one episode... but I'm ready to see them try
I’m kinda of the idea that maybe that’s what they want him to believe. He can’t remember, so why remind him
I honestly feel like the most interesting aspect of the show is the relationships surrounding the case. I’m also can’t help but think that’s a calculated move on the writers part and could possibly lead to the payoff in the end.
That's what I liked most about season 1 & 3. West & Hays were tight, especially for that time period. I'm gonna be pissed if they say Hays was working a desk in some bullshit unit for 10 years because West almost dropped an N bomb on him.
