damn these switch graphics are awful. i better play this a lot on the toilet, otherwise this was a bad purchase. never buying something without a true gameplay trailer again.
:( I have been waiting to see a review out there but I guess this will do. ugh. Still might want it for travel though. Is it a good/fun game at least on the switch, even if the graphics feel like a mobile game?
honestly can't tell you because of the connectivity issues last night. here is my initial review with no story mode played, the basic tutorial done, checking out kustomizing, and general look and feel of game after like 10 fights with 2 characters (noob and erron): i'm unsure of the differences between port and ps4/xbox, but with the mk servers having such issues due to traffic last night i found myself kicked offline a couple of times, and a number of other times i found myself finishing a fight, having it contact the server to update the rewards and then after 30 seconds or so telling me that rewards would have to come later when it could connect because the server wasn't responding. so basically half of my fights were either all for naught as far as rewards are concerned, or i'll get those rewards later once things get straightened out and it updates and validates that i actually did fight. why you have to validate your connection after every single action in this game is beyond me. terrible decision. at one point i was kicked offline and realized that (at least after poking around a bit) there are no apparent ways to retry connecting. if you drop offline you have to close the game completely from the switch home screen, relaunch and sit through another 30-45 seconds of loading, including the 20 second long epilepsy warning you can't skip. if you put the switch to sleep with game open, start up again later, you'll have to relaunch the game yet again instead of diving right in because you're not connected anymore and cannot connect in game to servers. any kustomizing you do to characters will not be saved if not connected online, you can't access krypt if not online, etc. everything goes through online for validation and while you can still play offline, rewards won't happen or won't be accessible until back online or something. it's nuts. loading seems to happen a ton in switch version and takes a long time in between everything i feel. the fighting itself and mechanics feel normal. i'm not a big fan of the switch controller and especially not the normal joycons in handheld mode for this fighting game. they're ok but don't seem intuitive for the d-pad play. might want to invest in a normal dpad joycon for playing on the go. not a dealbreaker though. overall it works and is fine. graphics seem like they've just compressed all textures or something. you know how most low-res games still feel crisp looking on switch? like something might not have the best graphics but it still looks good on switch and works even though all the lighting and details aren't there? including doom. well that's not here on this one. it just looks like they took everything from their high res PS4 textures and clicked on a radio button to make it go from "high quality" to "medium quality" or something. it looks like a mobile game to me. all the edges are pixelated, there are hardly any details on anything, and pretty much any details is blurry. examples: 1) the home screen. its just blurry and there's literally nothing graphically demanding going on. it looks awful. its like watching a home video from the 90s that was converted to digital from VHS and uploaded to youtube...just looks terrible. 2) the towers. i went to do a tower and legit could hardly tell who the fighters were that i'd be fighting until it zoomed in up close after selecting. it's just blotchy blurry pixels. again not a graphically demanding portion of the game. 3) kustomizing. this is pointless. you go there to find cool gear for your characters and make him look good, and all of it is so pixelated and blurry that its very hard to tell what even changed half of the time or see anything cool about it. 4) end of fight. after you've finished them and it does the winner pose or whatever animation, it just looks bad yet again with the animation. this one i kind of expect because it is more in game animation and such, but it doesn't look good. erron black for instance shoots a coin he was flipping in the air and you can tell there are details on the coin but they're so low texture that you can't make them out and it looks especially bad cuz its zoomed in and that's the focal point of the animation on the screen. it just seems like they did a sweeping down-resing and didn't just downgrade certain background things so that it still ran well but didn't look as bad. i would hope they'd release a patch later that added a high res texture pack to switch or something. it's a needed fix for how awful the game looks. that said, graphics while actually fighting aren't terrible mainly because you're in the action and its not as noticeable because you're not focusing on it. it works fine overall when fighting. my game also crashed twice while playing. not sure why, but seems like switch version is currently a bit unstable. that's basically all i got for now after my couple hours of poking around. i'm going to go more into it tonight and see if it grows on me the more i play. i'm hoping that i'll just get used to it and be fine, but i'm really longing to just play the ps4 version right now instead... just can't justify paying another 60 bucks after getting burned by this one.
yeeeeeeesh. If it wasn't designed for Switch and instead literally what you said, that sounds not great. But at least it sounds like all of the modes are included? I would say if you were looking to play and get into it online, I would never get the Switch version. I would just have Switch for travel and on the go MK-ing. What I'm sure is going to happen is I'm going to end up with both. No different than buying PS4 and downloading the MKX app to my phone to just have some MK fun on the go. I just don't want to pay full price for Switch at all so I may wait on that one - but in the meantime go PS4.
seems like half the people are cool with the graphics, which im shocked by honestly. i get it for in game, and overall am fine with it there, but i didn't think the menu's and such would be bad too. that part is what is burning me up a bit. as for online, i'm talking about single player activities being affected by always online, not multiplayer stuff. basically the whole game validates everything you do by checking with the servers online. granted that will likely be straightened out but it is annoying that you can't reconnect in-game (that i'm aware) if you get disconnected.
i mean its likely my expectations were higher for it graphically and all, and i'm sure the server stuff will be fixed soon enough to where it loads quicker and doesn't disconnect you and crash you much. those things are fixable. it really boils down to what you expect for the graphics more than anything, and i just think they're much worse across the board than what an acceptable 60 base game should be.
Got PS4 version (to start). Just jumped into some fights and the gameplay is really smooth. I like the slower pace. The fatalities are funny. They are more brutal than MKX but way more cartoony. Like even the blood feels more like paint than a realistic blood and gore that they went with in the last game. But it works.
yeah i have yet to be disgusted by a fatality, whereas there were some in mkx that i just didn't want to do ever... ermac's pulling out the intestines through the mouth comes to mind. kenshi also had one i found pretty grody.
Just bought it and started download. Been waiting for this game for awhile just forgot it came out today.
no. still can buy the easy fatalities. the game has grown on me on switch after playing a bit last night, but it is still pretty rough to look at and it did crash twice again. but the grind is awful. i know they're addressing it but it seems like i gain nothing from fighting other than minimal coins and the krypt just sucks in general as a way to unlock gear and such, especially when you spend thousands on concept art due to randomness. i can't do any new fatalities yet i've got a collection of scribbles showing the different arenas i fight in. as of now this game is inferior to injustice 2. they had it perfect in there. i would always get random gear as rewards after a fight, feel like my character was always leveling up, etc. it was amazing. if they had just implemented something similar in this where it felt like i was always gaining something after every fight this game would be awesome. as of now i almost want to stop playing for a month or so just so they patch everything and make it good down the road and i wont be burned out by then.
Yeah I was always having to constantly delete stuff on Injustice because I’d get so much completing a tower. Playing story mode first and hopefully they change it soon if that’s the case. Not digging having to buy the stuff now. It’s been said countless times but micro transactions kill games. I’m ok with buying dlc content but not spending money to unlock good moves and gear like a phone game.
Only played story so far so not sure about all the characters but holy shit is Kung Lao fast and has some great moves that are easy to pull off.
that was actually a downside of injustice, i spent a ton of time deleting things out of my inventory. i feel like any loot rpg is that way though, and injustice basically was that infused with a fighting game. i'd still be fine with it in MK, i enjoy that stuff (hence destiny). i just bought on amazon for PS4 cuz its currently $49 there... switch will likely just be my toilet and on the go random want to do stuff in mk system now. i want the true experience on console i've decided. i hate that ive spent this much money on this game now though. i should be more frugal.
Spoiler I’ve been reading up on the character tiers and it all the ones I’ve read have Erron Black and the Kollector as top tier. Kollector is legit but I guess I’m just not good with Erron but he’s always in the number 1 or 2 spot. Geras is a straight up wrecking machine.
Good summary of the Switch version here, which basically backs up everything Karl Hungus said. Visuals are blah, gameplay is maintained, online/Krypt suffers. But there's a lot of Switch video here to see: https://www.destructoid.com/mortal-kombat-11-on-switch-is-a-bloody-good-time-551204.phtml
i would say if you're someone who likes fighting games and/or mortal kombat, and you're at a point in your life where you travel a ton or have a wife and kids who dominate the tv and you can't sit down and play a console, get the switch version. if you have the choice in your life of either time to time portability to the toilet and maybe travelling every once and a while, but mainly can play docked if you like, just pick up the ps4/xbox version instead. it's not worth it for the handheld if that's not the primary way you're going to play. another issue i've seen is that there was a day 1 patch that ps4/xbox got but pc and switch ports have yet to get. rebalances characters, etc. that's going to be an issue if switch and pc have to wait a while longer for fixes to things.
yeah honestly couldn't care less. i'm more worried about patches that fix crashes like i am experiencing from time to time. would like fixes done quickly rather than waiting several days on the port to rework the code that xbox already received.
and i know saying a few days, big deal, but i recall PC for mkx having a number of problems and fixes would take forever to get out to them since it was mainly an xbox/ps4 game. took around a year for them to finally make mkx good on pc. worried we might be second tier on switch/pc still since outside studios are working them.
Do you have the physical version? I’ve got a digital copy and it hasn’t crashed and I’ve probably played for about ten hours.
Really liking how you can basically make a class with whatever special moves you want. Really makes it more fun because you can make different ones for how you want to fight a certain character.
Im waiting for patches to fix it before judging. Still fun to play but the extra stuff in it is not up to par yet. Injustice 2 still god tier
It’s honestly just shit in general just go watch the cut scenes on YouTube and save the 60 bucks Have yet to beat a single mk 11 version on the multiverse yet
Just raged quit and will not touch again because I almost threw my controller at the screen Am not a angry gamer
I saw a video of someone mentioning the possibility of a “Night King DLC” Make this happen netherrealm
about as much as her mic work in WWE (translation: not much) Shame too because a lot of the voice acting is solid
It's fun thinking back to how much I loved original MK games that were literally just fighting and towers and nothing else. So as long as those core things are good (and they are) then I'm good. I do wish each character had a couple random scenes for the fatal blows just to mix it up but that's a minor gripe.
yeah i think my main gripe is it seems to take a step back from what worked in injustice 2, rather than furthering it. but the core is there and it's still fun and still has those moments of awesomeness when you do something crazy and gory to someone. i just don't see myself playing it nearly as much as injustice 2 though. part of it might be me though. i feel like i need to unlock things via the tutorials and it seems more like a grind doing that than just hopping into a tower and going for it. unlocking a character skin and/or shao khan announcer voice for the normal tutorials has me going for that currently but i can only do one tab before getting bored and shutting the game off. and it was a slog just getting through towers of time tutorial too. now that that's finally unlocked maybe i'll start focusing on that after the patch and then get into the game. we will see.
True but to me all of the "grinding" is for add-ons and not core to what I have fun doing. I am perfectly content playing the story mode through and then fighting traditional towers and ultimately getting better at the game and learning who I like to use (right now Kung Lao has been easy to pick up). Like I never bought the skins packs from past MK games either and fatalities you can learn with the google machine without "unlocking them"
i feel like this guy is inside of my head: https://kotaku.com/the-switch-versi...witter&utm_campaign=Socialflow_Kotaku_Twitter
Just wish the switch version wasnt a full port but just a core offline game with online battles for those who want it. The always on mode is just dumb. It's not a mobile game.
Kung Lao is decent. Been getting good with Geras, Noob, and Kollector. Geras is unreal in terms of strength and quickness. Plus how he can pull stuff from behind the opponent after landing a blow or getting blocked. Kollector can hit across the whole screen with multiple moves.
Baraka is badass. Noticed a bunch in the top 10 leaderboard use him in online and I started messing with him and he’s legit.
Karl Hungus gotta be honest the switch version is really good. The online issues I'm sure are terrible (I've only played at home) but the game itself is impressive.
