People like to give Napoleon shit for selling at such a low price, but by that time it was clear that France wasn't going to put down the Haitian Revolution. There was no way to enforce their claims in North America without Haiti, the British Navy in the way, all while trying to fight the Prussians, Austrians, and Russians on land in Europe. Better to just sell it to America than let the British take it.
Ah yes the concept of mental institution and putting gun nuts there instead of prison. So like summer camp for white supremacists
Lot of conservatives are mad as hell about the New York Times 1619 project and showing their ass more than usual about it. The 1619 project is certainly thread worthy, but boy, the takes about how slavery doesn't impact our society today (in the currently hypothetical thread) are making me cringe.
That guy's Twitter feed is all race. I kind of worry that he couldn't move past it to cover other topics.
my favorite responses to it are literally leftist critiques of american democracy from right wingers but framing it as a good thing or something we shouldn't ever talk about its been a bizarre and disheartening day on twitter even compared to normal
I heard Ta Nashi Coates talk on I believe Chris Hayes's podcast that after he wrote a case for reparations for slavery, that Senator Warren read it, and called him to set up a meeting so that she could talk to him about it. Now, I as white man, I do not think Warren should mention reparations unless directly asked a question about it. One of those things that is probably good policy for pulling people out of a cycle of poverty and political suicide. Also morally right. But that isn't important.
going to expand a bit on this, despite it being hella weird to quote your own post. The reasoning is pretty simple. If you give a person with a very low wage 1000 dollar they are bound to spend that 1000 dollar on either goods or paying down debt which helps them to pay a similar amount in the medium term Give a billionaire the same and he won adjust his spending even a single bit. It would end up getting invested most likely making the netflix, amazon or workday shares even more idiotically expensive. If you would agree with me that the goal of economic policy should be to (all things being equal) improve he living standards of as many people as possible without the exploitation of the few for the benefit of the many i think its pretty clear which of the two steps does this best. Which of the two makes the money recycle quickest and which policy results in the biggest growth of goods and things like that produced. The only way this seems to be broken to me is when wages on the low end of the spectrum would rise to a level that people would work less hard but Id say the US is no danger of reaching that point
Everything you posted is 100% right and irrefutable however you forgot to account for the fact that politicians in this country are not and do not intend to help the majority of its citizens. Even when they setup public assistance programs those programs are designed to simply function as a way to funnel money to big corporations using citizens as a vehicle to pass the money through and to serve as the lighting rod.
