    24. I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer 9/10 Really enjoyed this book, it was one of my favorites reads of the year so far. I enjoyed the way the book was written with bouncing between locations and times to fill the narrative but would like to read more about the capture at the end.

    25. The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson 9/10 I also enjoyed this book a lot but it took me a long time to finish, I've really been struggling to find time to read this summer and has been very frustrating. I have been enjoying everything I picked up too and just haven't had the time to read.

    26. Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! Adventues of a Curious Character / Ralph Leighton (8/10)
This dude (Richard Feynman) was a funny ass physicist. There's some in the book about about physics itself, but mostly it's just the biography of a really smart guy that also had a quirky personality. The rare science professor type that also goes to Vegas, chases women, travels to Brazil and Japan to broaden his horizons (learned the language in both places), etc. There's a follow up book that has even more stories and anecdotes. Fun to read

    27. Antonio's Gun and Delfino's Dream: True Tales of Mexican Migration / Sam Quinones (8/10)
This is by the same guy as "Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opioid Epidemic" which is one of my favorite nonfiction books of the past few years. The writing in this one didn't quite live up to Dreamland, but the guy's still a clearly talented journalist and storyteller. This book has different stories that aren't connected to each other but they all tell about what it's like to be a Mexican working/traveling/moving/living in the United States. Probably the most fascinating were "A Soccer Season in Western Kansas" (no idea how the EMAW people live in that part of the world, the land and weather out there are just crazy) and one about German Mennonites that live in an enclave in Chihuahua, Mexico and have become drug smugglers/Mennonite Mafia

Here’s my review for it I wrote for Netgalley:

Anthony Everitt's biography on Alexander is an extensive one, covering the lives of his parents and then culminating with his mysterious death and legacy. It is well researched and contains quite a lot of details, especially on giving the reader background information on the culture of the Macedonians, Babylonians, and other societies mentioned. Furthermore, Everitt paints a raw picture of Alexander, showcasing all of his strengths and flaws, given a very human portrayal of the legendary king.

What I struggled with while reading was Everitt's writing style. I found it choppy and disconnected at times. It didn't flow as much as I would've liked it to. One other thing that bugged me was how frequently he mentioned Homer and The Illiad (dozens of times). I get that Homer's stories (as well as Xenophon's The Anabis) were very inspirational to the ancient Greek's, but comparing everything Alexander did in combat to Achilles was a bit too much for me.

All in all, it is an excellent book for those wanting to learn more about Alexander the Great, but be aware that it's prose might bog down some readers.

Thank you to Anthony Everitt, Random House Publishing Group, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC to review.

Yeah he wrote a couple more books called Dawn and Day about his transition after the Holocaust.

It's definitely a heavy read but it's pretty short.

I’m gonna see this one out, because I’m really curious about the stuff we see on the show.

But so far it’s a bunch of “ I never thought of myself as strong and handsome but people kept telling me that!”

“I never trained much w fire arms but I was able to be awarded the sniper assignment for the SWAT team”

    Lmao.

Finished. It gets a little better when he gets to the case work. The braggadocio tone is the same. Unfortunately if you watched the show, it doesn’t go much deeper into his experiences interviewing the killers. I guess that’s a pretty big compliment to the show. They were incredibly faithful to the book and his account of how the interviews went.

starting “the immortalists” by Chloe Benjamin tonight

1969 in New York City's Lower East Side, and word has spread of the arrival of a mystical woman, a traveling psychic who claims to be able to tell anyone the day they will die. The Gold children—four adolescents on the cusp of self-awareness—sneak out to hear their fortunes.

The prophecies inform their next five decades. Golden-boy Simon escapes to the West Coast, searching for love in '80s San Francisco; dreamy Klara becomes a Las Vegas magician, obsessed with blurring reality and fantasy; eldest son Daniel seeks security as an army doctor post-9/11; and bookish Varya throws herself into longevity research, where she tests the boundary between science and immortality.

A sweeping novel of remarkable ambition and depth,The Immortalists probes the line between destiny and choice, reality and illusion, this world and the next. It is a deeply moving testament to the power of story, the nature of belief, and the unrelenting pull of familial bonds.”

Penn Cage Books - Absolutely loved these. Iles is such a good writer. Had these only list for years and feel dumb for not getting to them sooner. Im bummed the series is over. It seemed like there was a bit of a cliff hanger. I was annoyed to see his latest book is not in the series. Will still read it. eventually

Nickel Boys - Man, as much as I want to like Whiteheaed, I just dont. Didnt care for the Underground Railroad either. Oh well. Short book at least.

Mindhunter - my thoughts on this book are on this page. Kind of meh

The Testaments - really liked this. I liked it a lot better than Handmaid's Tale. Pretty impressive that Atwood can write a good sequel 35ish years later at 80 years old.

So I'm trying to get in to reading and decided to start with 11/22/63 after seeing how highly thought of it is on this board.

I just got to the part where he finds the Dunning family after receiving a helpful tip from... Richie fucking Tozier and Bev Marsh?!?!

I've been consuming all things It lately (minus the book), so I was geeking out a bit.

I've heard that but I didn't know the scope. Like when I saw he was going to Derry in 1958, I double checked and saw that's when It took place. I was like "that'd be funny if he came across a character from It."

    1 chapter later...

    28. Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience / Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (10/10)
This is a classic from the psyc field, published 1990. I owned it and had seen many works reference it, but never took the time to dive in until now. The central idea is very simple -- People feel the best/happiest/most alive when they are engaged in a task that requires all their attention and is neither too easy or too hard for them. When is the last time you did something and lost track of time completely? You were experiencing "flow." Like I said, simple idea, but when you see it laid out it's one of the most profound descriptions of life I've ever seen. This guy's name is unpronounceable in English, but his ability to use the language to explain the most basic aspects of humanity is awe inspiring.

Yeah I made the mistake of picking up something too dated on this one. It's a paperback I happened to own from somewhere and it was mentioned in "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" as being something good to read so I checked it out. Supposed to give you an idea of how the Greeks thought, not just a regular history.

Has anyone read The Saxon Stories? I have enjoyed the Netflix show, so tempted to give the series a shot, but would hate to commit time to an 11 book series if it isn’t great.

    Lamb -
this is really funny. A spoof on the gospels told by Jesus’ bff who is kind of a dick.

Lethal Agent - meh. Author mailed it in. Could have been a good one.

The Water Dancer - Just ok. Coates is a phenomenal writer. Great prose the other than that just alright for his first non fiction effort.

Dry - this was a random book i heard about on a podcast. Southern Cal loses access to all water. All the water ways finally dry up. It takes everyone mostly by surprise. It’s a survival/ distopian story. Good for a fast action read.

Going to watch the movie, might reread next year and take some notes as I go. Lots of jargon I didn't feel like looking up, tons of names and characters. Disappointed since I really liked the first book I read of his
