that ball had zero chance of being completed too, kid really needs to learn when to throw the ball away
ahh didn't see the shorter route wide open on the earlier replay of that Sam int, guessing that's where he was going
run the fucking ball, twice if you have to, they weren't stopping us from getting downhill for 3 yards on two attempts
I can't believe that just happened, literal shock, really hated the idea of holding this game against Javonte for inexplicably jumping over the line on 1st and goal at the 5 this feeling is 2004 NCSU-esque (TA was down)
Alright I've recovered a bit and can now say what I was planning to say while it looked like Javonte was putting this away, just gonna pretend that overzealous and completely unnecessary dive attempt never happened now. He's the strongest runner we've had at least since pre-injury Ronnie McGill, looks like a svelte, faster version wearing that #25. With the OL really starting to come together in the run blocking game, if we ever find ourselves in 3rd and < 5 with plans of using two downs to get the 1st, don't fuck around...DOWN HILL RUN. happy shabooty drinj tonight god bless us everyone
Quick thoughts; it was a solid win but we could/should have beat them by a lot more. 1) Bateman continues to be a miracle worker given the state of our secondary. Felt like he asked a ton of the kids out there and Duke picked on #10 (Greg Ross) a bunch. 2) Front seven played really well. Strowbridge, Ross, Surratt, Gemmel were studs. 3) Refs called a very relaxed game. 4) I think we tried to put it in Sam's hands, but he wasn't really ready for it. 5) I like what we're doing with Javonte Williams - seems like we save him primarily for the second half as he's our best runner. Antonio Williams had some nice burst plays in the 1H. 6) Is Dyami Brown hurt? Guy went from being our best WR to barely seeing the ball; saw him come off after a high throw from Howell on a scramble play that he'd ordinarily maybe come down with. 7) Should give Michael Carter some props too; had a fumble but he ran really hard in the first half. Hard to believe at one point we were only averaging 3 ypc because it felt like we were running it at will on them.
Dyami tweaked something last week, there was some question as to whether he'd play today, should've caught that TD still and agreed about Antonio, this was as quick as I've seen him play
I'm pretty sure I saw Newsome on the injury list but didn't notice Dyami. Didn't realize that. Either way; on to UVA.
me too bro; was a shitty attempt to remind us how far we've come. we have a staff now who is capable of analyzing our opponents and predicting plays instead of giving up 70 points to ECU.
I honestly think we give Longo a check too. I know he's been mediocre-ish so far but I think continuity will go a long way and we're not getting someone better.
We have a true freshman QB, some solid skill position guys and an adequate plus OL. He’s done a decent job and I’d like to see what he can do with continuity.
his red zone issues are a massive concern and he abandons the run game way too much sam’s development rocks tho
Longo subscribes to the same numbers theory that Larry does when deciding between run/pass, if he'd just tweak that more situationally I'd be good
No complaints there, but situationally if we would've stuck with the downhill running on our 2nd to last drive with two chances to gain 3 yards, I feel like there's zero doubt we would've at least gotten the 1st and given us 3/4 more chances to pick up 7 instead of the 3 we settled for I agree with your continuity take though, and I think it's especially true in his case with the way his WR routes are more of a free flowing find the open space philosophy which relies more heavily on chemistry between the qb/wr.
I think Longo is all about taking what the defense gives you. In this game the times we ran the ball were very successful but oftentimes due to the fact that duke has almost no one in the box. I agree that during the game it felt like we should run the ball more. Just wanted to call out with that stat that we actually did.
fwiw when I said the same numbers philosophy as Larry this is what I meant, plays are dictated by the numbers the defense has in the box
was actually thinking tonight how awesome it'd be if he were the ST coordinator, I don't mean that as a slight to our kickers as there's really not much you can do in that regard outside of recruiting better talent, but he was really hands on with ST and we'd have a handful of game changing plays there every year as a result been really quiet there this year outside of Michael's good ko return against App St
Games this year are so much more fun than before. Was there yesterday and at Clemson. I’m just glad we’re relevant again.
i think we're flipping capers. hopeful guess is the other two are simpson and oxendine. package weighed in and said something similar
Recruiting is taking off. What a program. Gotta keep it going against UVA. Somehow we are a 2.5 point favorite in the opening line which seems like a shocker.
