    16. Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America (Rick Perlstein) - 9/10
    17. Bonfire of the Vanities (Tom Wolfe) - 8.5/10
    18. Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe (Laurence Bergreen) - 8/10 -
A nice popular history of Magellan's voyage. Pretty wild what he accomplished considering the outright malice that most of the voyage's leaders held for him. Lots of orgies and they had a execute a guy for gay sex. Laurence does a good job explaining the politics of Spain/Portugal in that era and how those issues spill over into the voyage. Really easy read, too.
    19. Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith (Jon Krakauer) - 9/10 - My first Krakauer book and I can see why he's so highly regarded. This book combines a history of Mormonism with a focus on the religion's fundamentalists that were active in the late 20th/early 21st century. I never realized that polygamy was such a contentious issue in the early years of the church. Kinda funny to read about Colorado City and Jeffs group now that we know what happened there. Just a really tightly-knit narrative and a pleasurable read. I hope to read his other works soon.
    20. Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit (John Douglas and Mark Olshaker) - 5/10 - I shared some thoughts on this one above. I'd probably like it more had I not watched the TV show first as the show was very faithful to the book (aside from Douglas' own bio which I didn't really care about). Douglas is insanely arrogant throughout and somehow seems to always have the answers. I'd have liked to have seen more on profiling's limitations but his ego would not allow that. I'm not mad that I read it but it was a bit disappointing.
    21. The Dictator's Handbook: Why Bad Behavior is Almost Always Good Politics (Bruce Bueno de Mesquita and Alistair Smith) - 8.5/10 - I checked this out based on Mookie Blaylock post earlier this year. Pretty typical popular social science book in that it's a synthesis of several of the studies throughout the author's career. It's based around selectorate theory, which holds that a leader will either pursue public or private rewards for his supporters depending on the size of that leader's winning coalition. He presented some ideas that I hadn't considered before and thus I consider it a worthwhile read. Like many pop science books, it does get a little repetitive but that didn't take away enjoyment from me.

Added the Magellan book to my list. Sounds good.

Hamilton and Bad Blood both were outstanding. Although by the time I read Bad Blood, i had read a ton of articles and listened to a ton of podcasts i didnt learn much.

    61. The Sixth Wicked Child (4MK Thriller #3) by J.D. Barker (8/10)
    62. Unfollow: A Journey from Hatred to Hope by Megan Phelps-Roper (9/10)

    Ghosts of Eden Park -
This is about George Remus. Biggest bootlegger in the Prohibition Era. He was in Boardwalk Empire if anyone watched that. It was just ok. It was mostly about the trail and the female DA that brought him down. It was pretty straightforward. Kinda meh. I was more interested how he became king, but they just kind of glossed over.

The Sixth Wicked Child This was a really good crime/ serial killer thriller trilogy. Lots of big twists. Highly recommend. Not as much as a psychological thriller as Silence of the Lambs, but like kind of the same feel if that’s your thing.

Unfollow - Memoir by Megan Phelps, granddaughter of Fred Phelps of Westboro Baptist Church infamy. She grew up in the church obviously. She was thier most visible social media person on twitter. Pushed out all their hate propaganda ect. Truly mindwahsed by that church, her parents and her grandfather. She left the WBC in her mid 20s. It was only 3 years ago, actually. I usually don’t enjoy memoirs because the authors are often unreliable narrators. And I think she was too, but i really enjoyed it. I never thought I’d be the least bit sympathetic to someone who proudly ran all those horrible protests they do. But i am a little bit.

This book really hit home for me, in this current environment. Her eyes were opened, slowly, a little bit at a time, by people who were civil to her, and not shouting her down all the time. I cant help but think of his board, and twitter w the dog piling on people that have hateful / loathesome opinions. It wasnt the people that flung shit back at her and telling her she was an awful person. It was the people that killed her w kindness and pointed out the hypocrisy, little by little. Some of her best friends are those she antagonized ruthlessly on twitter, because they say how misguided she was. In away I suppose that's more easy to do w someone like her, where you cant fully blame her from being indoctrinated into a cult since birth, than some racist redneck. idk. it just made me think a lot how we interact w people.

    30. Be Here Now / Ram Dass (10/10) -- Saw this mystical looking book in a used book shop in Asheville and was like hmmm this looks interesting. Turns out to be one of the big influential books of the spiritual/new age movement of the early 70s. The guy who wrote it was originally a Harvard professor named Richard Alpert. The book has four parts. The first part of the book is the guy's bio of how he went from Richard Alpert to Ram Dass. He was at Harvard when Timothy Leary was and did all kinds of experiments with LSD and psilocybin then eventually went to India to study with mystics. Second part of the book is wise sayings basically, but the pages are all decorated and cool looking:

The paper at this part is made out of almost brown paper bag type stuff and it's written sideways across the page. That part goes for about 100 pages and then there's a "cookbook" of stuff you can do to become more enlightened. It's not food recipes though, it's like different meditation techniques, yoga stretches, ways to breathe, how to set up your own Zen monastery, etc. The final part is a long list of other books to check out. The first part was the most fun to read, but I got lots of enlightenment out of the other parts too.

Had to reverse google search to get the reference. So there was a guy named Richard Alpert in Lost? Assuming that's where they'd have gotten the name...this book was widely read back in the 70s

He has three that are non-fiction. There’s a fourth called No Reservations but from what I’ve heard it’s a bunch of pictures with a few stories. His first is probably the best. I’d rank them:

    1. Kitchen Confidential
    2. A Cook’s Tour
    3. Medium Raw

His first is what made him famous. A Cook’s Tour was written when he was making his first show, of the same name. Medium Raw is near the latter years of No Reservations, prior to Parts Unknown.

Edit: Also there’s a short story collection called The Nasty Bits, which is solid.

    65. Hex by Thomas Olde Huevelt (7.5/10)

    Ninth House -
This is the first book in a new series. The book takes place at Yale. All the secret societies are powered by the occult and supernatural shit. The reason all these people that come from the secret societies become Presidents, billionaire hedgefund managers, elites ect are not because they're in a special club of elites, but because those Skull and Crossbones type clubs use dark magic to make them successful. Im not a big High Fantasy guy, but this stuff where it's grounded more in the real world is my jam. Really enjoyed this one

    Catch and Kill -
This book is incredible. When I first heard about it, I didnt have much interest. I thought it was just about how Harvey Weinstien is a scumbag. It's definitely about that - but it's really about the effort to cover up/ Catch and Kill the story. The level of corruption and what was seen as just the cost of doing business is absurd. Great book, for a genre (books that come from news reporting) I usually dont have much interest in.

    Hex -
Im not a big horror guy, but in the spirit on Halloween I said fuck it. Heard about this book on a podcast. Damn it was pretty scary. Definitely get Stephen King vibes from it, without it feeling like a knock off of a King book. Glad I got outside of my comfort zone.

    31. Anatomy of a Song: The Oral History of 45 Iconic Hits That Changed Rock, R&B and Pop / Marc Myers (8/10)
Collection of columns where author interviews the people behind various hit songs and gets the stories. Presented chronologically in the book. Lot of feel good stories. Most interesting thing is how changing technology dictates the type of music you end up hearing. AM radio needed short songs so it was all about singles. FM radio needed to fill airtime so longer songs and full albums came en vogue. Etc.

    32. Night / Elie Wiesel (10/10)
"A slim volume of terrifying power." That's the review on the cover of the edition I have and yep, that about sums it up. Crazy how you can learn about the Holocaust, not read about it for a while, then read something else and become outraged all over again. I wish there was some way for those people to have retribution

    33. People of the Lie: The Hope for Healing Human Evil / M. Scott Peck (1/10)
Didn't like it so I bailed after 50 pages. I thought the book was about the scientific psychology of "evil" but it's too much from a religious perspective for me

    26. The Messenger (Gabriel Allon #6) by Daniel Silva 8/10 Another good book in what might be my favorite series right now.

    27. Red War (Mitch Rapp #17) by Kyle Mills 7/10 This had a pretty good idea but just wasn’t executed as well as it could have been for me.

    28. An Art Lover’s Guide to Florence by Judith Testa 6/10 This was a pretty basic guide to art in Florence and would be okay to give an idea of some pieces to see but glosses over some works. It’s definitely not a complete guide and to be honest it doesn’t claim to be, but I was left wanting either more history about the works or more works covered by the book.

Lots of good books. Devil in the White City is one of my favorites. Larson has a new book coming out early 2020 about Churchill. Although, I thought his last couple books were sub par to his standard.

I cant remember what book the Messanger was, but the early books in Gabriel Allon are so so good. Also had the same opinion of Red War.

thanks. Most of us all kind of read the same books, so at some point a lot of us have familiarity w them. Youre the odd ball that reads outside the genres most of us read here. That's a good thing.

Blue Moon - Loved it. Best Reacher book in a while

The End is Always Near - I actually went the audiobook route on this one. Figured like it would be a long Hardcore History Pod, and it was. I think if I read this, and it was by someone not named Dan Carlin, I would like it a lot less. Its pretty meandering and more speculative ect. Things that make a podcast great, but as a history commentary - there's really no point to it, except civilizations have collapse and almost collapsed a bazillion times since humans formed them.

Edison - What. A. Bummer. Morris' Roosevelt's Trilogy was amazing. This was not. He Benjamin Button'd this book. Started w Edison's death and worked backwards to his upbringing. It was a dumbass as way to tell a biography. It was disjointed and anti climatic. Learned a lot about Edison. He was a massive asshole. Fortunately for Modernity, he was a dedicated inventor and not just a full out capitalist robber baron. He would have fucked over everyone more than he already did lol.

Maybe the reverse story telling won’t bother you as much as it did me. The info was interesting but the delivery irked me :idk:

Island of the Lost: An Extraordinary Story of Survival at the Edge of the World

Really interesting book about 2 shipwrecks that happened in the 1860s on the same island but on opposite sides.

More of the same from the first Stephen Jay Gould book I read, "Ever Since Darwin." He has like 8 more but I'll probably stop here. What I like about it is it's like a nature show -- he tells you about some crazy ass adaptation an animal has or something and how that came about in evolution and what it means for the rest of the natural world, etc. What I don't like is he's writing for another person like himself that is intensely logical and skeptical so he sets his arguments out in a careful and laborious way. Basically the first paragraph hooks you, then he spends the next 6-8 pages laying it out where not even uscwatson21 could argue with him. I'd prefer a book that's more like "here's cool shit about nature; I won't bore you with the technical details."

Very solid novel. Set on a college campus and about academic life so I loved it. Truman it's actually about Mizzou; not sure if you're familiar. Guy has several other novels that are supposed to be really good/literary. Book is from mid 60s

just finished Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner. It's also about academic life, really it's about the relationship between two couples but they met at U Wisconsin and there's tons of discussion about campus culture. I think anyone with ties to Madison, or who grew up on/around a college campus would really love it. People who just generally like high level writing and character development would also like it

I'm planning on being really weird this weekend so I'll try to stay up late and do a tally on the books I read this year. I tried to read a book a week this year and while I didn't sustain that pace I want to keep shooting for that goal because it has helped me read a lot more :fap:

Got this book for 50 cents at a Music Library selloff in college, had it on my shelf ever since. Finally got around to reading it as I prepare for an upcoming trip to Europe next weekend (:smug:) It's about a UCLA music professor in 1971 who visited Europe and went to all these sites associated with composers like Beethoven, Mozart, Wagner, Debussy, Ravel, etc. The writing is straightforward af: "This is what the house looked like. This is what the rooms looked like." Pretty dry but exposed me to some cool smaller places in Europe I didn't know about. Also enjoyed the random details of what it was like traveling through Europe in the 70s; crossing the border at communist countries and such.
