Morgan Academy in Selma Alabama does a hunt MLK weekend in Jan every year. 1k a person. Food and lodging included.
Moved into our place Nov. Of 2015. Saw the biggest buck I've seen since we moved this evening, after dark, in the driveway. A really full 8, with a doe. Cold fronts get'em hot and moving. Tempted to play hooky from work in the morning.
Must be nice to see deer rutting right now. Everybody gets excited about November, and I have to wait until January/February to hunt the rut.
https://rufusguide.wordpress.com/2014/06/20/seared-vension-with-blueberry-sauce/ Made this tonight. Highly recommend.
Middle Tennessee checking in. The rut is on. I’ve counted six bucks today just driving around compared to never seeing the fuckers. Huge 10 pt just chillin in my yard last night.
Dad found a nice scrape maybe 100-125 yards from the front yard of the house. Maybe 75 yards from a rub we found last week. Modern gun opens Saturday but I'll be gone for 2 weeks minimum, so my chances are slim. But I hope Dad gets one.
Surprised me as we pulled in coming home. Didn’t have enough time to grab my shit outta the garage before he split. He will be back though.
On my way to Kentucky for the first 5 days of rifle season, and it would appear to also be the rut. Very excite
It was roughly 540 miles today, with pit stops at taco bell, 2 gas fill ups, walmart, and the liquor store. Got here and across the pond was a buck chasing a doe for 30 minutes in view of the 15 or so guys that are here. Going to be a good week
Box blind on a food plot area around 800 yards from the river. Supposedly no one has sat the stand this year
Open day of rifle here, two weeks early for CWD positive counties. Saw a 6 point that will be a good one in a couple years. Froze my ass off, about time to start cracking beers and settle into some football. Bet time of the year IMO.
On vaca for the week. Hoping to get a time or two duck hunting, hitting a WMA they stock with pheasants, sit a couple times for extended bow, and shoot a squirrel or two. Action packed week.
Guy that hunts next door saw the big boy I saw earlier in the week, but couldn't get a shot. I might slip out in the morning for a bit. I really don't have time to fool with one, and a high of 63 tomorrow, but dammit I think homeboy is bedding and chasing on our property. Maybe I'll just do a slow walk after light in the morning.
Dropped my hat out of a tree stand. Tied paracord to an arrow and fished it back up. Working under the theory right now that I’m the greatest fisherman whoever lived.
My bff got a big 7 pointer and 2 pigs yesterday gggrrr dont think I'll get down there until Wednesday or Thursday Also, is a buck having a red head a function of age?
After 5 days of sublime Kentucky weather (including a high of 18 yesterday and 11 fucking degrees this morning) and 60 hours of tree stand sitting over 5 days. Saw him 3 times yesterday but couldnt shoot until I was sure he was big enough (and I am not sure the guide was accurate). Measured out at 132 5/8" and 240lbs. He was in a 10 yard cut between fields at 175 yards from me. He was with 5 does and as he came back in the cut I dropped him. Biggest buck ever for me
Nah, this was about 3 hours after I shot him. I had came back to the cabin and changed already. After sitting on my ass all day every day in the cold I was about done for.
My dad texted me that he just got a big bodied 11 point. Said he saw 4 bucks today, and the one he got might have been the smallest of the 4, but had a thick, gnarly rack. I'm curious to stop by after work and check it out
So an update on this: the Marlin .30-30 thing fell through so he got me a Savage .308 instead. Can’t wait to take this to the range. Also got an upgraded scope since the one I bought for the .30-30 was too short for the picatinny
The accu-trigger? Kinda played around with it yesterday. Seems pretty cool but I’m sure I’ll get a better feel once i go to get it sighted in
I've killed a 140 lb. 8 point and a 169 lb. old timer 10 days apart. Both followed does to the corn and had their guards completely down. The rut is on in SC.
Killed my first deer with a bow Friday evening. I’ve bow hunted off and on for several years but never really dedicated time to it like this year. Was trying to kill a doe and had a deer come out into a little strip about 5 minutes before legal light ended. Smoked it at 25 yards. Got to it and saw that it was a spike. Kinda frustrated by that, but it still ate good. It definitely crossed my mind that it was a spike because he was by himself. But I looked him over several times with the binoculars trying to verify it was a doe and couldn’t see any spikes. He also weighed 115 lbs so he wasn’t a small thing. Overall, really happy with the shot but a little disappointed that I didn’t listen to my instincts that he was a spike and not a doe.
Fucking missed a doe Appx 80 yards Went to range this morning before I headed back home. Wasn't bad enough to have missed, I fucked up and not sure what I did. Been a while since I missed one
Saw 9 doe yesterday. Once December hits I’ll probably take one for the freezer, until then I’m still holding out for a buck. Have a light drizzle on the tin roof of this shooting house, trying to stay awake.
If we would have shot better it would have been an easy 3 man limit. Doesn’t get much better in my opinion.
