I found Blanton’s “red” in Osaka. I’m not the biggest Blanton’s fan but I bought. I’m going back to Tokyo in a couple of days and will try to find the gold or SFTB.
So the three bourbons we sampled Saturday night were: Evan Williams BiB Elijah Craig small batch Blade & Bow My buddy is a devout EC fan, and couldn’t say enough bad things about the EWBiB while we were tasting. Then we did a blind taste test to pick the one we liked best, he picked it I don’t believe we’re on speaking terms currently.
Although I enjoyed the Blade and Blow, it’s just not a $45 bottle... pretty benign, sweet profile that’s lacking the complexity of other offerings at that price point. Knock it down to $25 or maybe $30 and I’d keep it in my rotation.
A blind taste test is why I had mentioned Evan Williams Single Barrel earlier in this thread. I enjoyed it. Still doesn't work for Woodford for me. I went to a restaurant last year and got a 1792. Took a sip and and noticed it wasn't 1792, my first thought was it was Woodford. The waitress goes "Huh, I plugged it in right, I'm not sure." Got the receipt, Woodford
Yeah 1792 is impossible to miss. The septic taste is distinct and once you taste it, you can’t miss it.
If you happen to stumble upon an extra Wild Turkey 13 and want to pass it along to the group, I'll take it off your hands
The Yippee Ki Yay is interesting I can’t drink a lot of it though, but it’s good for one or two drinks at a time. Love the label though lol
that’s where I’m at on yippee ki yay, it’s really unique but I don’t ever want more than one glass. It’s an interesting pour to chew on though because it’s so different.
Elijah Craig Small Batch Barrel Proof- is that the same thing as in the OP? Local shop has tons of bottles at $55.
agreed, it’s a great pour to share with someone who has never had it. Just got a bottle of the bourye really like it.
Any of these worth it? Mastersons 10 yr rye $86 Jefferson twin oak 90p $80 Calumet farms 12 yr $100 Jefferson’s Pritchard 90.2p $70
Personally, I love the Masterson's 10yr Rye, and I think that's about MSRP. Calumet should be added to the list with Whistle Pig of ok bourbon that's overpriced for what it is. Jefferson's is good but I think the regular and Reserve are great for <$50. Not sure if those are better tasting than the Reserve to be worth it, or not.
This review of the Jefferson’s Twin Oak wasn’t kind. Based on it I would not buy it at $80. https://malt-review.com/2019/06/25/jeffersons-reserve-twin-oak-custom-barrel-bourbon/
You should. It’s really good stuff and used to be everywhere for $25-30, then it won big awards two years in a row and now it’s relatively hard to find and $45-50 if you do find it. Some stores near me even included it in their bourbon release events this year.
What are some go-to review resources? It seems like a lot of them are trash. I don’t want to post to this thread for simple advice/reviews everyday and piss everyone off. Thanks.
The guys on the Whiskey Vault on YouTube have a lot of reviews, they're pretty good, and at this point have reviewed quite a few bourbons. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCElm866_W5r1eg8VjhFNARw Breaking Bourbon has quite a few reviews, and I think they're pretty good https://www.breakingbourbon.com/
