This is my thing. I really don’t care who the coaches are, it’s going to be Kelly’s system no matter what. Just keep the kids.
This is ultimately the issue. No matter our OC, we’re still going to have the same offensive bullshit and QB regression we’ve had for 10 years. Just at least focus on shooting it up with the best talent possible.
Mayer is replaceable given our TE success. Tyree, Johnson, and Buchner (obviously next class) are all kids we can’t lose out on if we expect to move the program forward. Pyne instead of Buchner is basically Brian Kelly offenses encapsulated in one situation.
I meant entirely versus replacement. We would likely find a suitable replacement at TE, either in this class or the next. We always have solid TE options. QB, RB, and WR we’re generally signing above average at best talent. You drop from Tyree to a 3 star likely. Buchner to a Pyne. Those are massive, massive drops that we saw come to light vs. Clemson last year.
If we don't sign Mayer, I'm sure Baumann or Berrong whoever else can develop into a quality, draft-worthy starter. If we don't sign Tyree, we're looking at sub-replacement level performance for a couple years to support the next QB in line and the offense might be very, very mediocre.
I doubt one exists. Kelly hasn't even had the opportunity to pretend to search outside the program for his replacement.
Are the premium sites offering any thoughts on what exactly happened with Long? Given that they floated the Rees as OC thing this week I’m guessing they had a slight heads up.
Sounds like all the players just hated him and/or his coaching style. Which is weird because he can recruit his ass off Matt Freeman said Long leaving makes it more likely Kmet will come back
So we have 17 year old five stars that aren’t going to come because they loved the guy and future pros who are going to come back because they hated the guy. What a predicament. And that sounds like a spin job. I don’t have a problem believing Long was a prick but there’s some level of BK fuckery behind this. He probably told Long that he wanted an expanded role for Rees and/or wasn’t going to fire Quinn and Long just bailed.
I find it hard to believe that no reporter has said word one that I have seen about Long not being liked, then as shit blows up were getting all these stories. Fuckery indeed.
I mean objectively speaking only Saban and Dabo have won any games of consequence in the last three years, but go off King.
Eh I’ve heard it hinted at on the podcasts. Something about book being more likely to come back if Long left. This was months ago. But there were no shortage of “wow we have two great coordinators that actually like working for Brian Kelly” stories. Something definitely changed recently.
I can't provide proof, but I know I've seen/heard whispers since before the season of players not liking him. Doesn't absolve any spinning going on, because being an unlikable douche and a good coach are not mutually exclusive.
No inside info, but I’d speculate that Long wanted out because he wasn’t actually given full control of the offense. This offense still had the Brian Kelly blueprint all over it.
Long had never called a single play before coming to ND. He wasn't in that kind of position, really. Kelly gave him more control than Norvell did.
Its been talked about pretty openly that Chip Long was a hard ass. I mean they say he and Lea are like polar opposites. Not like that is a big deal but honestly who knows what really happened. We likely will only get to speculate. If we keep all the recruits I'm good. Haven't heard much about Tyree and Mayer. Watts seemed still Irish from latest update
Still need to find a good ol coach. It’s fucking crazy how kelly can’t learn shit, the guy is always better when he brings in outsiders or when he simplifies things. His best hires where hiestand, elko, long and lea....his last two hires are Jeff fucking quinn and tommy noodle arm Rees. He is reverting right back. Just when the program is finally attractive to some top notch candidates he goes out and hires his friend and his little puppet. I wish swarbrick would just offer him 200 000 per year, take it or go fuck yourself in Tallahassee. Let’s bring in Campbell.
This news today is god awful but in insight that stupid hire of Jeff quinn was the crucial mistake. Ol coaches were salivating at the thought of coaching this ol and he hires this fucking bum? And we all knew at the time that it was dumb, how can’t he see that? It’s unbelievable.
It was clear last year that Kelly and Long had issues You could see it in Kelly’s face during the Michigan game that he didn’t agree with the play calling, but this year was the best offense statistically of the Kelly tenure. So hard to argue with the results even if the offense was extremely hard to watch We are in twilight mode, Kelly will be gone soon. He’s just speeding up that exit
