The south bend tribune guy had an article that mentioned he talked to some of the recruits, including Tyree, and they all said they were still committed.

doesn’t mean much to me until next Wednesday though.

ND at least teases me once or twice a decade. The Lions are basically NC State or some program like that. Just nothing, ever.

Hard to really say since kelly was probably involved a lot and the ol was only good one year when he was calling plays and that year the qb was crazy inaccurate. I think he would fit where you guys are going. His style is a lot of running and play off of that and when it’s clicking it’s pretty much unstoppable. With a great ol and decent qb I think he would be very good and fun to watch.

And he is a good recruiter, which is surprising to me bc he looks like a weird guy that doesn’t talk a lot.

I'm curious how some of you reconcile the fact that Michigan was the point of no return with Kelly but firing the guy calling plays that game is a catastrophe.

It's actually not a catasrophe with me. I don't love Long. My big concern is potentially moving on to Rees. I think he has the makings of a great coach, but is probably not ready to be OC at ND. My concern there is BK would be too hands on, which would take away his ability to serve as CEO, which seems to have been working better than when he was in the weeds with the offense. My other concern is why not Quinn?

Edit...why not Quinn leaving, not as OC. Let's not go there.

It looks like all of our beat writers are jumping on the narrative that Long was abrasive at best, and a humongous asshole at worst.

End of the day, he didn’t have an incremental affect on our offense. So it’s not a huge loss. Whether that’s attributed to him or Kelly is a totally different discussion. Ideally going forward though, we find someone that can have an incremental affect on the offense - particularly at QB. I’m not confident Tommy Rees is that guy.

Bunch of pussies afraid to lose their sources if you ask me. This is what sucks about the media. In order to get an objective report the journalist would likely have to upset people who are feeding them info.

The fact is in the biggest games (against Georgia in 17, Clemson last year, Michigan this year) his offenses struggled mightily. Even Michigan last year was a struggle for the majority of the game. One could argue that the offensive performance against elite teams has been the ceiling on the program the last 3 years.

I'll wait to complain about Rees until he's officially promoted.

so what would we hate more, Quinn to OC or Rees to OC. For me its the latter easily. I actually would be fine with Quinn to OC if that means we get a competent OL coach

Rees will be nothing more than a Yes Man and Kelly will be the de facto OC calling all the shots.

Wasn’t Long a finalist for the Broyles award last year? He’s not a terrible coach.

Exactly. If the next OC is just going to be a pass-through entity for Brian Kelly's offense then it doesn't make a difference. And the QB position is fucked either way so lets try to salvage the oline.

It's going to be Rees though.

Lou who is really conservative about what he posts pretty much says long wanted out because quinn sucks ass as a line coach and he couldn’t call run plays up the middle because they were so bad. Timmy came in to fix the run game - which, in true bk fashion was just tiring the run game into a gimmick.

Yeah, you make a good point here. The defense (for the most part) has been at the level where we can compete against the best and have a chance. They've played well in several of the big games over the past 3 years. The offense, while statistically productive when you look at the full season, has really struggled in the big matchups and frequently put the defense in bad situations.

Guy was a hell of a clutch play called though. There are 5-6 instances I can think of he had the right play set up to win the game

Long was not the problem. It was pretty much the same offense we've seen for the entire BK era. The biggest difference is that the number of times where the offense would line up and look at the sideline in confusion waiting for the play fell to basically zero, because Kelly took himself out of the process. And rational human thought won out on the run/pass mix for a season or two.

The same reason I don't blame Long for whatever offensive issues existed during his tenure is the reason I agree that there won't be much of a gameday impact from his loss. The concern I have is more the recruiting side of it and the fact that Kelly appears to be reverting back to hiring his guys.

Its easy to hate the Rees move. But nobody knows how he will be. Of all the QBs we had at ND he seemed to do the best job and have the most freedom to adjust at the LOS. He's been around football his own life and could be elite. Its just hard for ND to be the school that needs to find out

I don’t really care about Rees being the oc, it’s almost refreshing and might be fun. But there is absolutely no excuse/reason to keep quinn at ol. If he stays Nd will always suck on offense. I think kelly wants to relive his glory days at Cincinnati, let’s get ready for 40 passes a game.

Am I beating a dead horse here regarding quinn?

The moves of the last few years are really puzzling me, the guy is supposed to retire in 3-4 years tops. Why are you taking chances on a guy like Rees? Why are you hiring a deadbeat ol coach when you had a ton of better candidates for the job? Don’t you want to take your best freaking shot at a title?

The program is attractive for the first time in two decades and you pull this? I really do not get it. I think kelly just wants to be comfortable and ride into the sunset
