The riding in Summit County this weekend was pretty great. Arapahoe Basin on Saturday was amazing. Copper yesterday with my Ski Patrol buddy was all time.

When? And where are you driving from? The drive up the valley to CB is incredible. Did CB a couple years ago and what a great place, hope you like it steep.

Yea. Good. Most everything between Denver and Gunnison is just driving and it’s a haul. You do go by whatever the notorious Supermax prison is. ADX I think.

Should be prime time out there. Want to say it was 2015 but we got lucky and it was the most snowfall they had seen in 25 years and it was bad ass.

A lot of the terrain was too extreme for me then so I’d love to go back now as a much better skiier but frankly think I want to go back in the summer before I go back for skiing. A guy I know who “bummed it” after school ended up there and i can’t imagine a better summer lifestyle than what I saw from him.

Nice, thinking a lot of the mountain is gonna be too advanced for me. A lot of Solitude was that way a few years ago. Still had a blast doing the lower half of the mountain there and expect the same at crested

Big Sky literally isn’t a town dum dums. It’s a ski resort surrounded by rental and vacation homes.

If you want bars and restaurants, next time you go stay in Bozeman, suck it up and make the drive down. That’s what all the locals do. Also gives you the chance to hit Bridger Bowl for a day or two.

I mean that's essentially how most all ski resorts are and bars/restaurants/entertainment are build at the base.

And this is literally happening in Meadow

Mt. Hood is basically a suburb of Portland. Big Sky is in the middle of abso-fucking-lutely nowhere.

Then why did you use it for your example?

There are tons of big mountain resorts in the Rockies that have shitty nightlife. For every Breck/Aspen/Steamboat you have a Copper/Keystone/Telluride.

The closest population center to Big Sky is a town of <40,000 people and after that it’s a 3 hr drive in either direction to get to Missoula or Billings, neither of which are huge cities.

If you can’t see how that’s different from the I-70 corridor or a place like Mt Hood I dunno what to tell ya. :idk:

Again, Bozeman is a decent college town w plenty of bars and restaurants. It’s a bit of a drive to the mountain, but it’s never the hell-on-earth our Denver-area posters have to manage. It also puts you 10 mins from Bridger which is an awesome local secret. You’re welcome.

Calm down bud, it's a mountain. No one is being mean to a mountain. I'd go back to Big Sky in a heart beat, the lack of town is just a little draw back. Settle down bub

So yes, as you noted, some mountains in the middle of no where have decent towns associated with them.

It doesn't need to be a blown out town like Breckenridge, but something besides Scissor Bill's isn't a ton to hope for. Meadow is tying to pick up the slack a little

I feel like we’re talking past each other here. There is a decent town associated with Big Sky. It’s called Bozeman. It’s just slightly further down the road, but you can still make it frontdoor-to-chairlift in less than an hour.

Big Sky is so amazing because it has insane vertical with a fraction of the crowds of similar resorts. I’m not mad, but I don’t get wanting it to be built up so it mirrors all the resorts that are worse experiences than it. It can’t anyways because it is much, much, much more isolated

Bozeman isn't associated with it outside it is where you fly in. Don't be dense.

Yes, I loved Big Sky and it was empty and amazing. The lack of town and nightly entertainment was lacking.

No one is going to vacation in Bozeman and commute to Big Sky.

I don't need/want college bars and a part scene. Just soemthing more than Bill's. Meadow is accomplishing that and is 5-8 min away and there is clearly enough ppl to support those bars, breweries, restaurants, etc

Wat? Probably 8 out of 10 people you saw in Big Sky stayed in Bozeman and drove up in the morning. It’s an extremely common thing to do for both the locals and visitors. There are several shuttle and buses that can transport you from the town if you don’t want to rent a car.

You keep bringing up Meadows. Obviously being that close to a major metro area means that Mt. Hood gets a ton of traffic to justify the development. The closest big city to Big Sky is Seattle, at about 700 miles. I don’t think you appreciate how big and empty Montana/Wyoming is.

Are you talking about the Sahale expansion at MHM? I know they're putting in a new restaurant there but I thought they were easing the overcrowding situation in the lodge more than picking up the slack/adding entertainment to rival a Breck or even Copper.

I'm not talking about locals. There are enough ppl at the mountain to support some more restaurants.

I'm talking about the development at Big Sky Meadow Village. Not Meadow ski resort in Oregon.

I get that there has been some confusion about Big Sky Meadow and Mount Hood Meadows. But, with that being said I think you have a distorted view of the base area at Meadows. There's next to nothing there, it's just a big rental shop with a cafeteria and a bar. The proximity to Portland might be the reason they DON'T bother developing it further, nobody stays there once they are done skiing, they just go home.

I’ve never been to Meadows, just assumed that was what he was talking about.

Big Sky is similar. There’s no town there and it’s close enough to Bozeman that most people just go to Bozeman.

I’m not either. It’s extremely common for visitors to stay in Bozeman because it’s close, lodging is a lot cheaper, the town is p cool, and there’s nothing to do at the mountain.

Sorry for the confusion about Meadows.

Highway 35 was closed, couldn't get to Meadows if I wanted to but they shut down at 1pm today due to 80 mph winds. If it snows down in the valley this week and the kiddo has school canceled, we are going to head up to the mountain.

Headed to Park City / Canyons Wednesday.

I have the Epic Local pass and Saturday is a blackout date. I assume I either need to buy a regular day pass (discounted?) for Saturday or get a pass to another mountain (Snowbird?).

You picked a great week to come up here! We got 10” last night, 27” last week. It’s been snowing all day. Mountain cams are showing another 10” or so from today. Next wave comes thru later tonight thru Tuesday. At least another foot is predicted. I was out there today and it was excellent.

My understanding is if you are an epic pass holder, you get 50% off the window price on your blackout days.

Ski away from it, find a tree to hide behind if possible and hold on. Put your hand up to identify yourself too. Those are the basics. If caught in middle have to try and swim through it too. People instinctively try to outrun it

PNW dudes--whats the best time of year to ski in oregon? The bff is from portland so we go out there about once a year. I understand mount hood has basically year round skiing, any months you would avoid? Also what would you recommend between Mount Hood and Mount Bachelor?

I've only ever skied the Rockies--am obviously looking for the combination of good chance of powder and not incredibly long lines.

    Thank you for your service.

Great trip to Park City; preferred Canyons side this year. Kind of bummed I didn’t hike the ridge at 9990 this time but the guy dying recently gave me pause.

Sadly, probably just Vermont and Hunter for the rest of the season.
