So a while back a guy I know who is ethnically Chinese but has no trace of an accent and grew up here was at PnL. He will sometimes fake an accent and say he is from China to mess with people. During a show, there were some DJs who were randomly calling people up from the crowd to talk into the mic. They asked him where he was from, and in a bad accent, he said: “I AM FROM SHANGHAI!” Everyone cheered and the DJ then played “Gangnam style” (Korean song, obvi) for the crowd. I’ve never seen a story that better encapsulates power and light tbh
For those who live near/use the Alamo Drafthouse as their primary movie theater, I can’t recommend the Season Pass enough.
I'm in town Thursday-Friday next week. Where is the Thursday night pre SB party at? Dinner will be at Q39
I would just go somewhere in Westport, for a Thursday imo. Plenty of bars to find something up your alley. Pretty close to q39, too.
I’ve been there before thanks to this thread and it’s the first thing I looked forward to when I found out I had a meeting in KC.
I’m the type that can fit in and make friends pretty much anywhere. Just looking for a solid bar scene to check out a few places. Any must see KC bars or whatever? All I have heard of is the Power and Light District because last time I was in town I was super busy and didn’t really have much time outside of checking out Boulevard I have a best friend so getting laid is not a priority
definitely don't do Power and Light. That is for tourists and recent grads that just moved to KC. Westport/Waldo/Brookside are all better bar districts w/ a concentrated amount of bars in a small area. Plaza is ok too depending on the day, although there's only a couple bars worth going to (O'Dowds, Gran Falloon)
I enjoy a good dueling piano bar and Atlanta lacks that so I was thinking about maybe ending up at howl at the moon since my hotel is close by but maybe I’ll do dinner and then Westport before that .
I'm in my early 30's and washed, but I would imagine there will be places in Westport down the street that will be busy that Thursday night. I prefer to go drinking in the Crossroads area these days when I go out, but I'm not sure what could be busy down there on a Thursday besides Up Down and maybe Crossroads Hotel.
Piano Room isn't a dueling piano bar, but the bartenders sing songs while they work. Kinda divey but a unique experience. Solid late night option.
very good call to choose crossroads area. PNL is a pain with parking and it is still easy for you to take the free streetcar if you need to head back that way.
have you been to SOT or swordfish toms yet? Swordfish is my favorite bar here and the bartender (from Lincoln) is one of the best in the world
i've been to SOT, which i love. i keep meaning to go to swordfish but haven't made it there yet. is that the speakeasy?
I went to The Fall with a college friend who is a big Alehouse regular, haven't been to the Scarlet Room. It was cool, but I honestly would have had a better time if my friend wasn't being extremely obnoxious/wasn't already near blackout drunk when I met up with him.
In terms of the breweries located from Crossroads up to north of the river by Chicken and Pickle, which ones are people's favorites? I'm going to go brewery hopping tomorrow, and go to Casual Animal and Brewery Emperial a lot, the others not as much. Curious to hear which ones you all prefer.
Cinder Block is going to be the starting point, and is the only one of those I've never been to. I always forget about Torn Label.
really can’t go wrong with any of them imo. Border/Double Shift blur together for me somehow never been to torn label
Wow, how many fucking breweries does KC have now? I leave for 6 years and shit just explodes, apparently
