Looking at our 2020 schedule right now. Is 6-6 or 7-5 next year our ceiling? We need to steal a win and not falter once to go 8-4
We sucked so bad in 2019. I have no takes hot or even lukewarm beyond saying that we suck until we don’t.
Pretty good stuff in tunnel talk today. Patience. ---------- Looking back over the past three failed coaching staffs at Nebraska prior to Scott Frost's return home to take over the helm in Lincoln, it was a pretty spotty record with how the Rivals100 and Rivals250 prospects they signed turned out as Cornhuskers. In fact, it's somewhat disappointing and sobering to scan back over the reputed top recruits those three coaching staffs brought into the program and to realize how many of them either transferred out before their playing days were over or never lived up to their respective billings coming out of high school. The Rivals100 actually started in 2002, but in the last two years of the Frank Solich era he only signed one Rivals100 prospect combined in his recruiting Classes of 2002 and 2003, which was Omaha Central running back David Horne. The Rivals250 only began in 2006, so take that into account with the lists below. [*** Left Nebraska before completing eligibility.] 2004 42. OT Lydon Murtha 75. CB Cortney Grixby 2005 13. RB Marlon Lucky 47. DB Leon Jackson *** 51. DT Ndamukong Suh 76. LB Philip Dillard 2006 239. DB Rickey Thenarse 2007 73. WR Niles Paul 130. OL Jaivorio Burkes *** 180. RB Quentin Castille *** Bill Callahan was only in Lincoln for four years, but he proved that you could recruit top national classes to Nebraska. Recruiting-wise, one could have say that Bill Callahan had the most success of the previous three Husker staffs in recruiting R100 and R250 players. 2008 8. OT Baker Steinkuhler 2009 173. QB Cody Green *** 179. DE Jason Ankrah 240. RB Rex Burkhead 2010 57. RB Braylon Heard *** 183. OL Andrew Rodriguez 2011 61. RB Aaron Green *** 67. OT Tyler Moore *** 100. DB Charles Jackson 119. QB Bubba Starling *** 140. QB/ATH Jamal Turner 182. DT Todd Peat Jr. *** 223. Ryan Klachko *** 2012 147. OL Paul Thurston *** 192. DE Greg McMullen *** 2013 75. RB Terrell Newby 182. LB Josh Banderas 228. RB Adam Taylor 2014 82. OL Tanner Farmer 168. RB Mikale Wilbon Bo Pelini was the head coach at Nebraska for seven seasons, but he was lacking in the evaluation and retention of the R100 and R250 members he signed during his time in Lincoln. He ended up signing 20 players from those top Rivals lists, but you can count on one hand the players who actually ended up being true difference-makers as Cornhuskers. His Class of 2011 looked like it would be the group of recruits to help return Nebraska to national prominence, but that class ended up being a near total bust. 2015 119. CB Eric Lee 234. DB Avery Anderson 2016 76. DB Lamar Jackson 156. OL John Raridon *** 175. QB Patrick O'Brien *** 2017 62. WR Tyjon Lindsey *** 87. DB Elijah Blades *** 90. LB Avery Roberts *** 122. QB Tristan Gebbia *** Mike Riley credit for trying to make Nebraska a national recruiting power, and his staff worked hard and tried all kinds of creative ways to get top recruits to visit Lincoln. They did get plenty of top national and regional prospects to take visits to NU, with most taking multiple visits, but unfortunately they were unable to sign very many of them. And the ones they did sign are mostly no longer in the program. In the end, the Riley tenure in Nebraska will be remembered as more style than substance. 2018 98. QB Adrian Martinez 220. S Cam Jones *** 2019 61. ATH Wandale Robinson 91. DE Ty Robinson 116. S Noa Pola-Gates 127. LB Nick Henrich 139. OT Bryce Benhart 2020 59. WR Zavier Betts 64. OT Turner Corcoran 171. QB Logan Smothers 202. OLB Keyshawn Greene 232. RB Sevion Morrison 234. CB Henry Gray 2021 57. OL Teddy Prochazka The pickings were slim regarding uncommitted Rivals100 and Rivals250 recruits when Scott Frost took over in Lincoln in December 2018, but he was able to land a couple players from those lists. One of them, Cam Jones, is no longer in the program. But it's in his first two full recruiting classes of 2019 and 2020 where Coach Frost has started to distinguish himself as an excellent recruiter. In the past two cycles, Coach Frost and crew have signed 11 total recruits from the R100 and R250, which is the highest two-year total for Nebraska in the rivals.com era. In fact, if you subtract out the 2011 bust of a class, Coach Frost's 11 total signees from the R100 and R250 over the past two cycles is more than the total of any four consecutive cycles combined for the Huskers in the Rivals era. And Frost and his staff have accomplished this while facing the headwinds of three consecutive sub-.500 and bowl-less seasons. Nebraska, Miami and South Carolina were the only three programs without a winning record last season to finish in the top 20 of the Rivals team recruiting rankings. Now listed at No. 17 after the latest rankings revision, Nebraska's 2020 class is only four spots below national semifinalist Oklahoma this cycle. That's pretty astonishing if you think about it. It gets one speculating to what could happen with the Huskers' recruiting if Nebraska actually has some success on the field to help their recruiting efforts.
Ok. Give me a second here... Ok, now that we got that out of the way.... we are beating Purdue, Central Michigan, South Dakota State, Northwestern, Illinois, Rutgers, Iowa and Minnesota next year.
Open-and-shut case then. Dean is a fucking dolt. ***I was told this week the last time Scott Frost and Mickey Joseph supposedly talked was May of 2019. That makes the report even more head scratching that came out he was offered a job on Frost's coaching staff.
Dean and Sip are just carrying North Stadium's water. Shatel also said there was an offer made to Joseph and they went into scramble mode. There's a reason the LJS gets all the scoops and OWH is on the outs because they aren't willing to blatantly lie to everyone. Nice journalism. On one side you've got all the LSU writers, OWH, NCIU, The Athletic, etc. and on the other you've got Dean and Sip. Believe whatever side you want.
It matters because it once again shows how ill-prepared Frost and his staff are for a job of this caliber. Doesn't mean he won't learn and improve but it's been a pretty good-sized shit show since the beginning even ignoring all the shit talking they came in with. It also hurts our perception across the country getting told thanks but no thanks by a former player after offering to triple his salary and settling on someone working at a fucking credit union that left his last several jobs with not much fanfare. The optics are shitty.
I don't think most people around the country think about Nebraska enough to give a fuck about Mickey Joseph telling us no.
Moves like this do nothing to change that view. Someday maybe they will and it won’t be amateur hour 24/7 at 10th and Vine.
Matt Lubick seems quite qualified and some Oregon posters here have nice things to say about him, which they try not to do at all wrt Frost's decisions. I don't really get the complaint about him besides him taking a job outside of football for a time.
Relatively speaking, I agree. I just think Dean is an idiot and can’t process the nuance of the situation, in that we could have reached out to his agent but not directly with Joseph.
I meant it doesn't matter if he was reached out to or not about possibly coming on. Let's say he was as you believe. So a coach who is coming off winning a national title at a school in the state where he grew up, and likely still has many family members at didn't want to leave. Not really a huge shocker or issue imo.
Most people don’t even know who Mickey Joseph is. I didn’t realize he was coaching at LSU until the grumors about him coming here started swirling.
I couldn’t give a shit that he turned us down. We suck, let’s just get bowl eligible so we can keep trending up so we can keep recruiting the youths.
Honestly, I would have rather had Helfrich or Lubick over Joseph. Unless we’re looking for a dude to strictly be a recruiter, I’d imagine a dude who has been an OC isn’t a bad look.
I know I'm a little more pessimistic than most but we just hired an Offensive Coordinator who was working at a bank. I'm sorry, random guys on a message board that had some nice things to say is not going to make me feel any better.
Yeah on paper it’s not a great thing to see, but people acting like this dude is on par (no pun) with the hiring of like Rich Fisher who was a golf pro/HS coach or whatever. I too, would have liked to hire Joe Brady, but unfortunately we fucking suck and getting a dude who’s had success at the P5 level (less than a few years ago) is alright with me. Also a huge fan of the Snyder hire if that happens.
What if he had decided to take the year off unemployed instead of working like many other coaches have done before coming back? Would that have made you feel any better?
That is, despite the stint at the bank he has a better resume than literally every other staff member
It would make me feel better if Frost was making big boy hires, instead of going after former players or friends.
Who exactly did you have in mind? Getting rid of Walters and DeWitt is a sign that he’s willing to cut ties with his buddies.
What if this friend also happens to be a good coach and recruiter? I don't mean to bust your balls. I just prefer to give a guy a chance before shitting on him or his hiring.
I agree with you, but will counter with the fact that he and Lubick were also buddies. I’m happy he got rid of Walters and Dewitt, for posterity’s sake. At some point coaches hire who they know and that’s not uncommon, but if I’m understanding Harrison Beck correctly he would’ve wanted a national name/top hire regardless of prior relationship with Frost. I like the Lubick hire and think it can’t be any worse than Walters. Happy we got him.
Regardless of the outcome I know I can expect unparalleled sportsmanship during this basketball contest. We invite your players, coaches and support staff for orange slices and Hi-C postgame.
What is the science behind women's volleyball players being, on average, significantly hotter than women's basketball players?
