IF that was actually what happened, then yes very negligent. Flying VFR near mountains in fog is insane. Most private aviation accidents are because of pilot error and a lot of those errors are because the pilot is overconfident in their abilities or they don’t treat the situation with the seriousness it deserves.

But I also thought someone posted earlier in this thread about seeing video of the helicopter spinning down, which sounds like more of a mechanical failure.

 

Thanks for this explainer. Had a friend earlier today point out the (probably obvious) point that helicopters can be more dangerous often because operators feel pressure to make the trip, or they aren’t getting paid that day.

With Kobe, this pilot was likely on salary. This all sounds avoidable, which is compounding the tragedy of the lives lost. Damn it.

Very well could have happened. Do I think anyone pressed the matter? No. He was circling above the zoo for 15 minutes, waiting for clearance from ATC as well as with cloud cover. The cloud ceilings were extremely low. These were terrible conditions that nobody should've tested. That fog doesn't lift until late afternoon sometimes. The route they took, as well as the data from an aforementioned tweet, leads me to believe it was CFIT.

If he was urged, it's his job to do what's right. That's one of the first things you're taught to abide by. Again, hate to speculate, but it sounds like it was unfortunate ADM.
