I don't agree with this at all, by the way. Just saw that he posted it. Reyes outstruck Jones by 12 shots. Ok. So.....advantage Reyes? What's the point there? That Reyes should have outstruck him by more?? How about the Champ doesn't allow a guy fighting his 13th professional fight to outstrike him? It's interesting that Jones was the aggressor and still got outstruck. The "aggressor" threw 27 strikes in Round 1. Reyes threw 59. Jones threw 37 in round 2 to Reyes' 68. 34 vs 45 in round 3. Reyes threw more strikes in every single round. How does the aggressor get so wildly out thrown?? moving forward and getting hit is not exactly what people mean by being the aggressor. And it's a 5 round fight. whether he didn't fight well in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, or 5th rounds is not relevant. It's the totality of the fight that's being judged, all 5 rounds. So cool, Jones won 4 and 5. But he lost 1, 2, and 3. Why do the 4th and 5th rounds hold more weight than 1, 2, and 3?
I hate the idea that getting a take down is automatically a huge positive. I don't know how taking someone down and them getting back up without taking any damage is any different then throwing a bunch of punches that don't land.
More effective and noteworthy than moving forward and not throwing or landing nearly as much? I think an argument can be made that the person throwing more strikes is demonstrating more aggression, but the person moving forward has more ring control. At the end of the day landing strikes and doing damage (in this type of fight), for me, is the measure of who wins a round and a fight.
There are fighters who expend a great amount of energy to not be taken down. If that guy can go down then pop right back up, that's smarter than fighting a single leg for 3 minutes. The net effect is the same, but it's so much better to go down and get back up. Of course we are talking 43 levels above the average MMA judge's head with this kind of logic, but....
Rogan believes the champ rounds should count more. And some more guys are on that bandwagon. Kavanaugh said if this was a fight to the death we all know who was going to win that. Reyes had nothing left in the 4th and 5th. And the 5th was really about surviving. People will be watching that 3rd round for years to come to decide this one.
I see what Kavanaugh is saying, but if that's really a fight to the death it doesn't play out the same way. Both guys know it's a 5 round fight and (ideally) pace themselves to be able to go that long. It's more like claiming that it's a contest to see who is fresher after 5 rounds, as if that holds some sort of weight. And Jones clearly won rounds 4 and 5, but it wasn't lopsided. it wasn't like maybe a 10-8 round, he never had Reyes in real trouble. If Jones were teeing off on Reyes and Reyes was saved by the bell, yea, I can kind of see that holding some weight. I just re-watched Round 3. I really don't see how you give that round to Jones. he does very little. he is constantly pushing forward, but throws 1 shot at a time. little pot shots; one side kick. one jab, pawing with his lead hand, feinting. I don't think he threw a single combination the entire round. It's not like Reyes was lighting him up, but Reyes landed 2 good uppercuts, a couple round kicks to the body and head, and he also threw a lot of the single shot jabs and kicks to the legs. It's sort of a close round, but I'd struggle to make an argument that Jones won it. He just didn't do anything. AND if you are going to give Jones credit for those takedowns in 4 and 5, in round 3 Reyes defended a takedown. Do we give Reyes credit for that? So in addition to out-striking Jones in round 3, Reyes defended a takedown. I dunno, the more I watch it the clearer it looks to me.
It should just be an automatic DQ on something that clear and blatant. But Diego getting that W sees $$$
Lol at "Do I win if I can't continue?" It was an illegal shit but he was looking for a way out bc he was getting his ass kicked.
I thought it was extremely close but thought Felder had it. The late takedown gave the judges the out they needed for a hometown decision
Watching the Yoel/Weidman fight again and it cannot be said enough how much of a mutant Yoel is. His traps and those muscles in the back of his neck look like they were built in a lab. Those Cuban genetics are scary. I also love how Till says he's ready to fight anyone but Yoel.
I checked out Josh Thomson’s podcast “Weighing In “ after he was on Rogan and I’ve got to say I really like it. Josh is ok but Big John McCarthy is his co-host and he is the star in my opinion. Just solid take after solid take and a lot of stories from his time as a ref. I think you’d enjoy it.
Thanks. Big John did Joey Diaz podcast about a month ago. He’s amazing. He’s got all the best stories.
