While I’ve been pretty adamant that taking Tua is not my first choice, if we are truly deadset on him as it seems we are, I really hope we wait until 5 and don’t unload any picks that could go towards filling other holes. If he’s not there at 5 part of the solution is what it should have been this previous year: don’t take anyone else at qb, either fill a hole or trade back and then start Rosen all year to see if you have anything, if you do: great and he becomes an asset and if you don’t: great, now you can likely go draft your qb for the future. But if we don’t get Tua this year, having Rosen on the bench doing nothing except validating a bad trade is pointless. Regardless of what happens, we aren’t winning the super bowl this year or likely making the playoffs and if it takes another year to get everything right in the grand scheme of things, then so be it.
Call me crazy but I don't think Love lasts to 18. I think the play would be to trade down a handful of slots and grab him if that's who we want.
Lions are playing hardball, from everyone’s cryptic tweets their price is very steep for #3. I’m imagining they are asking for all 3 1sts Dolphins obviously don’t want to do that and have since been floating to the media their interests in Herbert and Love lions know they won’t get a better deal from the chargers, colts, jags or panthers. Think this is both teams just having a staring contest to see who blinks first. The lions don’t want to flip to 13 with Indy or 9 with Jax or 7 with Carolina. They’d run the risk the guy they want is off the board I’d bet they get something done eventually. Don’t believe the redskins talking about QB’s as a ploy to drive up interest in the #2 pick or the giants GM claiming they are open for business
Rosen is sunk cost. I'm over it. No need to try see if we have something there. In my mind, Tua is the guy that's been an elite prospect since HS. He's the guy I don't have any issue taking a chance on. If it's one thing I've learned over the last few years it's that when it comes to QBs, no guts no glory. A large chunk of the upper echelon guys were either top 2 picks or cost the team that got them a trade up.
Do not desperately move up and do not trade back unless some idiot team gives a fortune With our haul of picks, we have the strongest negotiating position in the draft
Agree on the Redskins front. I think they'll end up just taking Young unless someone really pays up. The Giants definitely strike me as a team that maybe should consider a trade down seriously. I know Gettleman is a moron, but they could definitely use the extra picks and not have to leave the top 10 and still get a OT.
gettleman doesn’t believe on trading back and never has. He just can’t come out and say “nope we aren’t trading back”
It's hard to believe someone that stupid is really an NFL GM. I guess when you're in the club, you're in the club.
In the end the whole world knows we have the best offer to trade up, no trade is going to be done to jump us without Detroit/Washington checking with us
We have so many holes I’m so firmly on team don’t trade up. If Tua isn’t there just take BPA and suck again next year and get TL or JF
I think a lot of people are vastly overestimating the odds of us being in a good position to get Lawrence or Fields next year, if it's even possible. Win 6 games and you're completely out of that sweepstakes. It's possible 4 might be too many. Strike while the iron is hot and leave this draft with Tua or Love. Preferably Tua.
Love is trash. He looked like ass this year. He’s no different than Rosen who got beat out by a 65 year old QB. Herbert is also trash.
I think we're in a bit of a pickle if we don't come away with Tua, but I agree, it's absolutely foolish to surrender a king's ransom to move up 2 spots. Herbert is 100% not worth a Top-5, let alone a Top-15 selection and i'm only considering taking Love if he falls out of the 1st. Take BPA and take a flyer on someone like Hurts in the middle rounds.
What do we consider a king's ransom? There's always a premium to trade up for a QB and if we are scared to pay it then we're just never going to have one unless we get lucky. Obviously there's a price point that's too much, but I think Detroit will be reasonable. 5, 39, toss in another pick gets it done I think. Maybe a little more.
I agree with this. A lot of holes in the roster are going to get addressed in free agency, and the dolphins are not going to have 14 rookies in a 2 deep. I don’t think we’re going to have to give up 3 firsts or anything, but be prepared to give up some picks to move up. All of our move last off-season were done with the idea that we had enough resources to go get the guy we want. They’re not going to sit back and wait for love or Herbert to fall, they’ll move up and get their guy
I understand why some people like him and I can picture a scenario where he thrives outside an offense that really wasn't suited for him. I just can't feel good about it myself though. I just don't like big school senior QBs that have looked largely underwhelming.
Thought experiment. Would you package 18 and 39 for another top 10 pick? Yes, stolen from Adam Beasley.
depends on who we we’re taking because you don’t do that unless you’re in love with a specific player
We will pay what it takes to get Tua and we absolutely should. The difference between him and the others is staggering. Please God do not go cheap on QB for the 10,000th time. Pay the price to get the guy, especially when you have more than enough to make it happen. I'm not real worried about it, I think we are more than prepared to do what we need to do. I don't give a shit if we give up "too much value". The value whiners are the people who actually thought the Rosen trade was a good idea last year when it was pretty clear the guy sucked and we bid against ourselves. Value has its place but in this situation, at a position and pick this important to the future of the franchise- get the cornerstone and fuck the obsession over pick value charts.
Whoever the dolphins have as their QB1 is who they’re going to take. They’ll try to get the price down, but they will pay whatever is needs to make it happen. This was the plan the minute they unloaded tunsil
I could very easily be wrong about his future, but I'm not sold on Tua. While this option seems like a trainwreck (and could be) it could also yield a Tom Brady, or at least 2 shots at a franchise QB.
Exactly. I’m not saying it’s the preferred option, but I don’t know why trading multiple 1st round picks to take a QB is no big deal but drafting a QB with 2 first round picks in b2b years is stupid. Unconventional? Absolutely. But at least you get two chances at hitting on your QB instead of 1
I love when people bring up Tom Brady examples of finding some scrub that turns out to be a HOF in like the sixth round. That shit hasn’t hasn’t happened since Brady like 20 years ago.
Guys if we hold onto enough late picks or trade them for shitty talents like Josh Rosen, eventually after many many high picks we might find someone who is as good as the more talented guys we won’t pay the price for
I agree, but if they feel they have to, they’re going to. They have A guy they want, they’re not going to settle for choice 2. That’s why they got the picks stocked up
You don't have to take a marquis name to get a generational talent. Mid or so first round qb would be fine. Mahomes was taken 10th I think. Again, if we take Tua and he kicks all the ass, that'd be cool, but I think there are safer bets.
“Safer bets” give you Ryan tannehill, it gives you culpepper over Brees. We have to take the risk on the higher ceiling for once. Getting good player that are safe is how you end up with a decade of mediocrity. I don’t know about your guys but I’ll take risking a bust and knowing we need to move on or not in 2-3 years over 7 years of uncertainty of wondering if an ok qb is going to take the next step
Sliding too 18? 10:00 PM ET (via Tony Pauline): Wills sliding while Thuney’s market expected to explode Additional sources confirm my earlier report that several teams have moved Jedrick Wills off their tackle board and are now grading him as a guard
Guy like this leads your defense for 10 years and makes as many Pro Bowls. Which is why they'll probably draft Herbert.
