Think you're pretty offbase on this. The more assholes that are out and about being selfish, the longer the rest of us have to stay in our homes and social distance. The town I live in gave tickets to 129 people for violating social distancing ordiances and I'm a fan of it. It's an idiot tax. I have no problem with people shaming idiots.
A few weeks ago I was super bummed out thinking about a 2020 without sports. Now, I hope all these leagues get fucked.
I don’t have a problem with either of those. It’s more the vigilante types who jump to conclusions and are all over people asking simple questions or a photo of someone walking in a park. Four weeks in and suddenly everyone is an expert. I think I’m just spending too much time online tbh.
Yeah, I don't care about any of that. And I don't care about people walking in parks unless the parks are closed or you're walking in a group of 10 or something stupid. Then you're an asshole. It's not hard to walk around where you're supposed to walk around and give people distance.
Yeah, I just read that. I don't see how that is remotely feasible. Also, how many tests -- which aren't exactly in great supply -- would have to be devoted to this venture? Live sports would be great, but in a responsible matter.
I mean you’re probably looking at 50 people per team when you consider players, coaches, security, training staff, etc. Then add umps, television personnel, etc. And more importantly, are you sequestering all the hotel personnel as well?
they said expanded rosters in the story, so way more than 50. Plus, are you going to sequester any and all media that covers each team? National media from ESPN/MLB Network/Fox/TBS? Television production staff involved, both local and national (because this whole thing is worthless without television)? Stadium workers at every game venue? And they hope to have this set sometime next month? It seems insane.
Given what we have seen from Manfred, there is no doubt this would be a terrible decision with disastrous consequences. Not well thought out at the expense of peoples lives.
What do you mean not well thought out? Their plan in case a player tests positive is not to stop playing. Rather, they’re just going to have more players available to take over. Seems pretty ironed out to me. What could go wrong with that? “While the possibility of a player or staff member testing positive for coronavirus exists, even in a secured setting, officials do not believe that a positive test alone would necessarily be cause to quarantine an entire team or shut down the season, sources said. The plan could include teams carrying significantly expanded rosters to account for the possibility of players testing positive despite the isolation...”
I don’t know about other baseball fans, but I for one would rather not have a season than have one where Acuña and Albies have to social distance from each other.
If you're determined to be a selfish dick to everyone else's detriment, I don't see how it makes someone a "bossy kid" if they tell you to cut that shit out
Does RowdyBurns win his ban bet if MLB starts in June/July and the entire national league tests positive for COVID-19?
I agree, this plan is so well thought out that MLB will likely wait until the government gives corporations blanket immunity for putting employees in harm’s way.
carrying extra players so you can keep the business rolling when the starters contract a life-threatening illness lol. is john d rockefeller running baseball now or
This is the one league already accustomed to social distancing from fans so it should be a seamless transition
it’s an out of patent drug. From what I can tell there really isn’t big money in it anyway. I just think he’s hoping it’s a fix (with no proof) so he can tout HIS fix that no one else saw as a fix on the campaign trail. Winning re-election is as much for more of a priority as enriching himself right now. He already likely made his family in the tens of even hundreds of millions with the one real estate tax break that was buried in the fine print of the stimulus bill.
manfred continues to make rule changes to the game that no one actually wants. he clearly despised the sport he’s in charge of. he will stop at nothing to destroy the sport so none of this is surprising
2 days ago surgeon general says would be the “hardest and the saddest” of “most Americans’ lives" “This is going to be our Pearl Harbor moment, our 9/11 moment, only it’s not going to be localized; it’s going to be happening all over the country,” Over a thousand people dying a day and still going up. And people are talking about how to get baseball back.
“this will be this generation’s 9/11” the smart doctor says to the generation who lived through 9/11 and everything that happened as a result
Honestly, I hope MLB does go through with this plan and it’s a total disaster. I want someone to hack the electronic strike zone. I want players being called cunts on live TV. I want total chaos so that every other league realizes how fucking stupid playing games in 2020 is and they all stop giving people hope it’s possible.
am I wrong in thinking that there is no coincidence the news about the MLB/NBA etc ramping up plans to comeback a few days after the president was on a conference call with their commissioners?
These sports leagues believe they have access to quick result testing. Instead of using it on meaningless games, why not get that testing to the hospitals?
Our district in SW Ohio kicked ass in getting an online curriculum turned around in a couple days and they have kept the kids busy and engaged. Mine are 8th and 9th graders, though. No, they aren't learning at the same clip, but they aren't falling too far behind. We're not stressing over our kids, but we're holding them accountable for at least turning shit in and staying engaged. I don't know if grades will matter, but our teachers are impressing me. My boys owe it to them to work hard in return. If nothing else, even if grades mean squat, I want mine to be remembered among that group who actually put in an effort and was able to come out of it with high grades. For the record, my boys have also impressed the hell out of me in their response.
That's what I'm hoping too; but yet our labs are still crazy backed up while the NBA got all their players/staff tested within days. But, we know in today's society money gets you access to a lot of things the public cannot.
I was caught off guard how much work my wife has had to put in for her third grade class. This isn’t a break for teachers as I thought it might be. She’s constantly at the computer working on plans or meeting with her 3rd grade team. My first-grader has been outstanding. My second-grader, however, has her ups and downs in levels of motivation.
The caveat about mine being 8th and 9th graders is a big one. At this point, they're more wired for this type of learning. Hell, it will be good practice for college in a few years. I can't imagine trying to engage young elementary classes right now. I did see one post about one of our elementary teachers who drove around town and dropped each kid's scholastic book order on their their porches, when they came in, with a hand-written note for each kid. I thought that was kind of cool.
Also, this week is their actual spring break and they are all taking a break. They've earned it. They were on it from day one, all the while some of the larger and more affluent districts around us essentially shut down and took a wait and see approach until DeWine ordered an extension. Now they're all scrambling to regain their kids' attention and get them moving. It's probably too late for them to get any traction at this point.
Christians: The blood of Jesus can cure anything. Christian’s rationale when a young child dies: It’s god’s will Also Christians: God is all loving and merciful
For our school, the teachers are posting videos and sending out school work. But most of the teaching is done by us (mostly my wife) because a 15 minute video isn't going to teach a 2nd and 4th grader how to math. It is a break for teachers as far as teaching and dealing with kids. And ours know they can melt down and get what they want and (I hope) wouldn't do that at school. Meanwhile, I'm still working a full schedule and she's working 4 hours a day (like she normally would) and paying tuition to teach our kids.
I think you're underestimating how much administrative shit goes on behind the scenes. It would be far easier for my wife to be physically at her school right now than doing the shit she'd doing at home PLUS tending to the kids' general needs, PLUS supervising their work. It's not a break. Signed, Husband Who Feels the Brunt of It
all of this is much more difficult than my normal teaching job and I long for the days where I can just go back to my classroom and just teach. It’s not a break. I’m still dealing teaching but now have a more difficult way to do it. And I’m still dealing with kids and families in now a more difficult way to communicate.
My sister does math curriculum planning for a bunch of districts and has been churning out 12 hour days since Whitmer shut the schools.
Add to this the amount of low income and homelessness in our district as we try to feed almost 400 kids twice a day. We have a bunch of families with no internet and no computers at home so distance learning is now even harder. And I have kids I’ve been calling for 2 weeks and no one answers and I have received no call backs. And we are starting full blown online school with attendance next Monday.
Nine out of 25 in my wife’s class have not done one thing yet and she has had no response when contacting parents.
For sure. Teachers are putting a lot more work into administration and the teaching is left to the parents in our case. Then when parents don’t understand or the teacher isn’t clear or messes up (which this is all new to them too) they have to deal with parents instead of just taking the questions real time. Some are good at communicating, and adjusting. Others are not. For us, the teaching is really limited and left to us which is obviously going to happen when you lose hours in the classroom of face to face.
