My special needs goddaughter has had a fever the past few days and couldn’t shake it. Shes immune deficient so not good. Her mom took her to their pediatrician today and they tested her for flu, strep and covid but the doctor diagnosed her with an ear infection so hopefully that’s it. She’s two and is my favorite human being on the planet.
They should be able to visually see an ear infection pretty well. If they're calling it that then I would feel hopeful.
Back in 2004 my 20 month-old son was hospitalized with RSV. Probably the scariest time I've had as a parent was spending those days at his cribside listening to him try to breathe (respiratory therapists kept assuring us that his case wasn't nearly as serious as many in the NICU, and that he'd be OK, but when it's your toddler gasping for air it's hard to be optimistic)
The bumbling of things by the government is by design because it gets idiots talking about how the government sucks and more money should stay in the hands of billionaires. When the highest tax rate in the US was > 90% a ton of shit got done. Attending college was affordable, money was spent on feeding the less fortunate among other things. You should read up about the US government pre-Reagan and his destructive policies.

Paramedics/EMTs on PBS just said that workers like them in NYC make an average of $37k with no health insurance. He said if he gets sick he won't be able to go to the hospital. Most work 2 or 3 jobs just b/c being a paramedic lets them help people.

My understanding is that WHO was trying to get details from China. China was resisting. China finally gave details to WHO in exchange for WHO saying nice things about China. WHO issued a Global Emergency warning and said nice things about China. This actually reminds me of the actions of a certain American federal office holder. Cutting funding to WHO is not the best response. The whole world needs to team up to hold China accountable to the world in regards to pandemics. If China insists on trying to hide communicable disease outbreaks, then when fishy reports come out of China the entire globe needs to immediately prohibit imports, flights, etc... from there. If China had taken responsibility and been transparent earlier, they could have been incredibly helpful. At the same time WHO needs to fix some internal operating gaps. For one thing, when it comes to dealing with China it needs to swing first and ask questions later. Defunding WHO will not help. I have to think that idea is just another attempt at deflecting responsibility for our own late response to this crisis.

Or that the bureaucratic, FDA says no you can't do your own tests because reasons, let's create our own fucked up tests, endless list of traditional bullshit that we've been dealing with for months will someone handle a few billion and put it to better use than someone like Gates (or anyone else with money trying to create solutions to this problem)?
