he's officially joining the NBC ND telecast once he retires, but i don't know if it's official what his role will be. given that he's going to replace collinsworth though (that again is official) it stands to reason he'll be in the booth replacing flutie and not on the sideline/working the halftime show

i watched, damn these teams were good. Mirer was so good. The physicality of these nd teams was impressive

Some mistakes were made by the coaching staff, holtz was definitely not a great game day coach but his teams were tough, talented and played hard for him. They also had a plan, they knew what they were doing. An identity is what people like to call this now

This is the transfer we all were expecting, ND has an obvious hole at DB with no depth so would make a lot of sense.

I think this was the last ND game that I didn't get on TV. I was able to find an online stream to watch it but the quality was awful so I probably only caught about half of it. I remember being thouroughly entertained by two horrible teams though. And also McCleod Bethel Thompson

    Gold Standard

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly has been a very busy man amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Radio interviews, keeping up with his players, working on plans for this upcoming season and all that comes with running a football program remotely are part of what he has been up to, as well as a lot of discussions with recruits in the 2021 class.

BlueandGold.com recruiting insider Mike Singer has the latest on a dozen priority targets for the Irish who have talked recently with Kelly, what they are saying about the Irish leader and more in this edition of The Gold Standard.

We are going to kick this off by going right to offensive line targets Brian Kelly has had a call with recently, and many of these are video calls. Magnolia (Texas) High offensive tackle

    Matthew Wykoff
picked up a Notre Dame offer March 26, and he told me that he could see himself playing for the Irish. Just a few days after landing an offer from the Irish, Wkyoff got to speak with Kelly and enjoyed that conversation.
“It was awesome,” Wykoff said. “We mostly just talked about how special of a place Notre Dame is.”

Recruiting outlook: Three weeks before Wykoff landed the Notre Dame offer, he released a top schools list of Arizona State, Auburn, Penn State, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and USC. He told me that Notre Dame making his top group added the Irish to his favorites list. Look for him to officially visit Notre Dame in June, if allowed, and he would like to make a decision before the start of his senior season.

    Garrett Dellinger
has been speaking with the Fighting Irish staff about officially visiting June 12-14. The staff is looking to have a mega offensive line weekend, much like they were planning to March 20-22. Dellinger tells me that he has been communicating with Kelly as well, with one topic being an official visit.
Recruiting outlook: Dellinger’s recruitment has been an enigma. There is buzz that LSU is the favorite for him right now, and all six FutureCast picks for Dellinger are for him to land in Baton Rouge. There has been a vibe for several months that he is not a big priority for the Irish, but some facts don’t line up with that, including Kelly personally communicating with Dellinger. He keeps his process close to the vest, so we will just have to see how this one plays out. Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Kentucky are also believed to be involved for Dellinger.

You can’t mention Dellinger without bringing up his teammate, fellow four-star offensive lineman

    Rocco Spindler
. He is one of the very best interior offensive lineman prospect in the country, and his phone is blowing up on a daily basis from schools from across the country. Notre Dame has been working hard in Spindler’s recruitment for a long time, and Kelly recently had a video chat call with Spindler, Irish pledge
    Blake Fisher
    and
    Landon Tengwall
, who has since committed to Penn State.
“It was a great conversation,” Spindler said. “He actually caught me at a bad time because I was doing speed and agility work with my trainer. I paused that for a good five minutes, and he told me, ‘Hey, I’m not going to take up anymore of your time. Get back to your workout.’ It was funny because I said, ‘I really just want to talk to you!’ But he said, ‘No, you’re going to get back to work and listen to your coach!’”

Recruiting outlook: Spindler added that he and his family are hoping to get on a call with Kelly this week. I have my FutureCast pick on Notre Dame for Spindler, and I’m not considering a change for that anytime soon. Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State and others will continue their push for him, but I like the Irish here. He was going to visit Notre Dame March 20 and April 3 and take other official visits before a May 15 decision, but that has been pushed back. Spindler is adamant about taking all five officials before he makes a decision.

    Pat Coogan
a couple weeks ago now, and he is instantly become a big target for the Fighting Irish. Coogan tells me that he had an early April video chat call with Brian Kelly that went well.
“Coach Kelly and I really hit it off,” Coogan said. “I really liked him and he was very personable which was great. We talked about my recruitment with Notre Dame, the coronavirus and then both our backgrounds. He made sure that I felt no pressure and took my time with making a decision.”

Recruiting outlook: Since adding an offer from the Fighting Irish March 26, Coogan has added offers from Ohio State, Oklahoma, LSU and Texas A&M. I still feel really good about my Notre Dame pick here. He wants to experience the process and visit some of these schools, but I don't think any program will top his feelings for Notre Dame. He is adamant on waiting the dead period out and taking official visits, but we’ll see if he sticks to that timeline or not.

picked up an offer from Notre Dame March 4. Johnson informed BlueandGold.com that he is going to take official visits to Auburn June 6 and Notre Dame June 12, although those trips can't be counted on at the moment. Johnson had a chat with Kelly recently and also a video call with offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.
“They talked about how they want me to get on campus,” Johnson said. “They also got to talk to my parents. The call with Coach Kelly was great. The tradition and excellence that Notre Dame has both on and off the field is remarkable. I’m excited about heading up for an official visit June 12.”

Recruiting outlook: He is nearing 40 scholarship offers, and it doesn’t look like his recruiting process will slow down any time soon. Before the pandemic occurred, Johnson’s plan was to make a commitment later this year, but I could see him popping sooner than that. Auburn and Notre Dame may be his unofficial top two schools, but several others in play for the Fort Wayne, Ind., native.

    Rayshaun Benny
is one of Notre Dame’s recent offers in the 2021 class. The Irish joined the long offer list of the Rivals100 prospect, which includes Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon and many others. Benny recently had a call with Kelly.
“He was talking about how excited he is about me,” Benny said. “He wants to get to know me during this process. He seems like a down to earth, genuine guy. I met him in person once during my sophomore year.”

Recruiting outlook: Interestingly enough, Benny is being recruited by a bunch of schools as a defensive lineman. He told me that it's about 50/50 regarding the amount of schools that like him on offense and defense, and I’m sure there are some schools that would take him on either side of the ball. Notre Dame is looking at Benny on offense, but he prefers defense. Does that hurt the Irish’s chances here? Not necessarily. What is most important to him is being developed and having the best chance to play in the NFL, and that may be on offense. Notre Dame will need to push that button for Benny.

Last week, I posted a full update on Ewa Beach (Hawaii) Campbell four-star athlete

    Titus Mokiao-Atimalala
, and you can read that by clicking here. There isn’t a clear leader in his recruitment right now, but Notre Dame very may well be the favorite in his process. Kelly and special teams coordinator Brian Polian have done a solid job in this recruitment. Mokiao-Atimalala has kept in consistent communication with Kelly since landing the offer, and here's what he told me on their recent conversation.
“He was checking up on me and the family and making sure we're all good,” Mokiao-Atimalala said. “He was congratulating me on some awards I was given and stuff like that. Our relationship is still strong and I appreciate it.”

Recruiting outlook: Like I mentioned, this is a tough recruitment to read right now. Normally, he is not able to visit many schools due to being out in Hawaii, and he obviously can’t take trips anytime soon. He was going to visit UCLA and USC in March, but those visits were cancelled, which at the end of the day could help Notre Dame. He hopes to visit Notre Dame June 19-21 for his official, but that is up in the air. Nebraska, Michigan and Oregon are also contenders in this recruitment.

From the coaching staff to the current Irish recruits to the players on the roster to those on the academic side of things, there are a ton of people from the Notre Dame community recruiting Matthews (N.C.) Weddington running back

    Will Shipley
. Of course, Kelly is involved in this recruitment, and I expect him to have a call with Shipley in the very near future.
Recruiting outlook: I posted a lot regarding Shipley’s recruitment in last Monday’s Gold Standard and had another story on him Saturday. At this point, there is not much else to discuss with Shipley — it's really just going to be a matter of where he decides to end up, likely either Clemson or Notre Dame. Shipley knows everything he can about those two schools right now; it is just about making a choice.

While he told me that he wants to wait the dead period out and get to South Bend before making a decision, the current vibe is that he will pop in the near future, potentially even before May, which would obviously be prior to his tentative June 12-14 official that he set for Notre Dame.

“We’ve scheduled that date in case Notre Dame is the place for me and it is where I end up,” Shipley told TigerIllustrated, the Clemson Rivals website. “I am not sure when I am committing or where I will end up at this moment.”

The recruiting process seems to be really wearing on Shipley, which will speed up his process of committing. The June Notre Dame visit is really just a placeholder if he does choose the Irish.

Will it be Clemson or Notre Dame? There will be tons of rumors and speculation out there on him in the coming days. Shipley has not made a decision on a school yet, and we will just have to wait and see what he decides on.

    Ryan Barnes
on March 25, and the Irish quickly jumped to near the top of his list. He is already had a conversation or two with Kelly, as well as video chats with Irish assistant coaches Clark Lea, Terry Joseph and Mike Mickens. Barnes was fired up about his recent discussion with Kelly.
“My family and I had a great conversation with him on the phone,” Barnes said. “We talked about the school and what a degree from ND means and we also discussed the philosophies for the football program and what it stands for.”

Recruiting outlook: I’m not at the point of putting in a FutureCast pick for Notre Dame here, but I’ve been thought about it. From what I have heard on the Notre Dame side of things and the Barnes’ side, there's a lot to be optimistic about for the Irish. While Barnes has a 5.6 three-star ranking, this is a young man who is being pursued by Clemson, Florida, Georgia, LSU and many others. He hoped to make a decision before his senior year, but he is not tying himself to that. He could make a commitment at any time, even if that means extending his recruitment into the fall.

Notre Dame offered Council Bluffs (Iowa) Lewis Central School tight end

    Thomas Fidone
on Jan. 30 after Rees saw him in person. Fidone announced a top six schools list of Notre Dame, Iowa, Penn State, Nebraska, Michigan and LSU. New Irish tight ends coach John McNulty has been keeping in contact with Fidone in recent weeks, and Kelly recently had a FaceTime call with Fidone, the nation’s No. 60 overall recruit.
“I thought he seemed great!” Fidone said. “He seemed up eat and like he’d be a coach I’d love to play for. We talked about his résumé with tight ends and how he thinks I’ll be one of the next great ones.”

Recruiting outlook: For Notre Dame to be able to land Fidone, they will need to push the Irish’s tight end success in the NFL. He is a good student and education is important to him, but he really seems to be valuing a place where he can be developed to play in the NFL, and Notre Dame certainly has a great track record for just that. However, Notre Dame did join the race for Fidone late, and McNulty wasn’t hired until March, so their relationship is still very new. Nebraska is still the favorite, but there is some Michigan buzz lately as well. Iowa is a factor, but the Irish have the upside in this recruitment to pass them up.

didn’t land his offer from the Fighting Irish until March 26, but with his film and academic stature, you have to wonder why it didn’t occur sooner. Notre Dame is one of the many schools keeping in close contact with him lately, and that would include a recent conversation with Kelly, which impressed the 6-1, 175-pound speedster.
“I think he’s an amazing coach and really open and straightforward,” Alexis said. “He said I’m one of the most unique players when it comes to what I do off the field and what I do on the field is spectacular. I think it went well and had a great talk.”

Recruiting outlook: Alexis was candid an interview with CaneSport, the Miami Rivals website, over the weekend, saying that the Hurricanes had the lead in his recruitment, followed by Georgia. The Irish will take at least one linebacker in the 2021 class, and McMurray (Pa.) Peters Township’s

    Donovan McMillon
is the biggest name to know at the moment. Notre Dame hasn't offered many 2021 linebackers just yet, but they are making McMillon a big priority. Both Lea and Kelly have been working on McMillon, and Kelly recently had a FaceTime call with the 6-2, 193-pounder.
“I think the call went really well; he talked to me about my rover position,” McMillon said. “We also exchanged many stories, and he talked to me how great of a University Notre Dame is.”

Recruiting outlook: Don’t let his 5.5 three-star ranking fool you. This is a young man who holds 49 scholarship offers, including Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and many others. McMillon’s recruitment seems in the early stages as things have really opened up for him in the past couple months, going from having a few Power Five offers to becoming a national recruit. “It was pretty cool. I know he has a busy schedule. It was cool that the head coach took time to talk to me. He’s so genuine. It really felt like he was just wanting to check up and see how I was doing. I really appreciated that.”

Recruiting outlook: Walters noted in our conversation that he doesn’t check his phone too much, but he is hearing from other schools, and that would include Michigan. But I don’t believe there shouldn't be any reason to be concerned about him swaying from his Fighting Irish pledge. He is locked in with Notre Dame.

Speaking of UM basketball, seems like we have interest in a transfter C. Was a top 150 kid, two years of eligibility left

So does anyone think Brey got the same talk Kelly did from Swarbrick after his disastrous 2017 season?

    From Loy on Spindler

I put in a 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction for Notre Dame to land a commitment from Clarkston (Mich.) high school four-star offensive guard Rocco Spindler back on March 3, 2020. Irish Illustrated and 247Sports want to take a look at where things stand regarding this prediction and whether we should “Like It, Love It, Leave it.”

    Love It.
In full transparency, as I want the fans to know where I stood on this one between the three choices, I was going back and forth between “Love It” and “Like It” the entire time. I didn’t even have “Leave It” under consideration to be completely honest.

There are plenty of teams still in play for the 6-5, 295-pounder, as he moves closer to releasing his Top 5, setting his official visits, and eventually making a final decision. With that, as I’ve said for a very long time, I believe there are three strong contenders including Notre Dame, Penn State and Michigan.

The Wolverines definitely have the distance working in their favor, as the family has been to a ton of games and been on campus a lot. They have a great connection with the Michigan staff and in all honesty, it won’t be easy saying no to Jim Harbaugh and his crew. Regarding the class, Spindler has become close with a few commits headed to play in Ann Arbor and that is a positive for the Wolverines here.

Penn State is a fast-riser in the recruitment of Spindler and offensive line coach Phil Trautwein has done a great job. Head coach James Franklin is someone Spindler likes a lot as well. Anyone writing off the Nittany Lions here needs to step back from that. He is very high on Penn State.

For Notre Dame, Spindler’s connection to the commits in the 2021 class headed to play for the Fighting Irish, from what I’ve gathered, is second to none. He’s very close to that group, which is helping Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish, led by offensive line coach Jeff Quinn, have been relentless in their pursuit. Others pitching in here include head coach Brian Kelly, offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and special teams coordinator Brian Polian. I’ve always felt as though Spindler is looking to attend a school with strong academics, a program that can develop him for a career on the next level, a tradition of strong play along the offensive line, and a place where he can develop lifelong friendships. I think the collection of all that is what has Notre Dame on top as of today.

If Spindler were asked what he likes about Notre Dame, there are a lot of reasons he could use to answer that question. He’s been high on the Fighting Irish for a very long time. He could go into things related to football, academics, his connection to the staff and commits, or another factor. That said, one thing recently took place that I believe pushed Notre Dame out front even further. Wanting to hear more from a player’s perspective, Spindler reached out to former Fighting Irish All-American and current Indianapolis Colts offensive guard Quenton Nelson to pick his brain about Notre Dame.

"I was just asking him a few questions. I was like, 'Hey man, I know you were in my shoes at one time, so why did you choose Notre Dame?' Then he went in-depth and said that it was the right decision at the right time," said Spindler of his talk with Nelson. "He said he wouldn't redo it for anything. He said they really developed him into the player he is today. He said you have to know what you're looking for. He told me he was looking to be challenged, he was looking for a great education, great facilities, campus, and to really be developed into a longterm NFL player. He said the brotherhood there can't be beat anywhere else. He was like, 'I was expecting my freshman year to get punched around, bullied, teased from the upperclassmen, and while they would mess with me, those same guys were willing to work with me after practice and during practice to develop me into a great player.' He said that's what he looked for. He said that it was about helping the team. He said that's what they did and that's all about the tradition that has been passed down for decades. He was like, 'I did the same thing with the class underneath me and I know they're doing the same thing now. That's how it goes.' I asked him about the fun things to do and he said that hanging out with the guys was the best thing. He said you don't have much time between school and football, but those guys will go to battle with you every day and have your back when the time comes. He was cool."

We’ll see how this one plays out, but I believe Notre Dame is the team to beat as of today, so I’m sticking with my 247Sports Crystal Ball.

Per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Spindler is the No. 47 overall player in America, No. 2 offensive guard nationally and No. 3 prospect in Michigan from the 2021 class. Spindler will also play in the Under Armour All-America Game.

USF was way worse, that was the opener, an entire offseason of hope just fucking slaughtered

I got kicked of Busch stadium, then subsequently kicked out of Hooters across the street on this day. Busch was because of Franzia, Hooters because of this game

    Ahh to be 23 again

Tulsa was the game after Declan Sullivan. I remember leaving the stadium being so fucking mad. Went for a td when all we needed was a fg...

that Tulsa team ended up being decent? and they had some big names on staff if I remember correctly
