you don't have to get heated to not completely agree with every take from a scorching hot take machine. I used to listen to everything Simmons put out but I've almost completely cut out his podcast. his company still puts out lots of stuff I like. rewatchables, jj redick podcast, desktop, etc.
Way Down In The Hole was disappointing. I’ll check out the ep on the pilot and hope it improves but my hopes are so much lower than they were a couple hours ago. Van couldn’t remember Ziggy’s name. Not the actor. Ziggy. Doubted (?!) HBO’s ratings. And Jemele said that if you asked most TV people the three best shows, they would list The Wire, Breaking Bad, and Game of Thrones. Just horrifically wrong. Made me appreciate the pop culture stuff the rest of the site does so much more. And I already loved most of it.
got finished so poorly that no one cares about it but the wire and bb are usually two of the "best" shows on peoples' lists.
Yeah. It’s not that wild of a take. Sopranos, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Wire, and GOT probably make up most of the general public’s top 3
Lol, yeah the foremost shock jock in radio history who made an untold fortune off purposefully offending everyone in America definitely didn’t adopt any sort of persona or manufacture drama. Here’s a rare live stream of Stern opening family Christmas presents:
wire, breaking bad, game of thrones, and sopranos are the 4 I hear most often for sure. I've never watched GOT but I don't think that's a wild take.
Klosterman does a pretty good job of challenging Bill but he’s not on it a ton. No ones asking for a first take type show. Just calling out dumb takes in a ribbing/ball-busting way instead of walking on eggshells around Bill. I think most friend groups pile-on when someone says something stupid
When Howard would get in fights with Gary etc on air he obviously knew it made for good radio, but their reactions were genuine. I've seen Beer League, Artie isn't THAT good of an actor. I'm sure if I searched "Best Stern Show fights" on YouTube there would be compilations in excess of 30 minutes, if I searched "Best BS Report/Bill Simmons Podcast fights", there wouldn't be enough to make a TikTok
Yeah, if you want to listen to a heroin addict and porn star scream at each other, The Howard Stern Show is a lot better bet than The Ringer.
I like the show, I just don’t think it’s as amazing as the ringer folks were trying to convince us last year. I’m guessing the HBO connection had something to do with it.
maybe. it's kind of hard for me to listen to these writer-types talk about shows that i like because eventually they end up making fun of them and it kind of ruins it for me. that's not just exclusive to the ringer.
My biggest gripe with Bill's taste in film/TV is his blindspot for Sci-Fi. He's worthless in that genre. Was really looking forward to Edge of Tomorrow Rewatchables, and it turned into a masturbatory critical theory senior seminar on Tom Cruise and Doug Liman's career choices instead of any substantive discussion of the actual movie. My guess is Bill let that one drop without any oversight whatsoever. Just heard him call I am Legend terrible in an episode he couldn't stop gushing over Enemy of the State, during the same week he reviews Total Recall. I would love for them to do a Gattaca Rewatchables but shudder to imagine how bad they could screw it up. On the plus side, I generally enjoy the Westworld pod (KOC did a great job on his guest spot the other week), and adored the Star Wars Bingemode series.
You can disagree that those aren't your favorite shows, but I can't think of a more unanimous top 3 when it comes to "prestige shows". It's not even close to horrifically wrong.
I would suggest giving it another shot and keep going. I quit after the first few episodes too only to revisit it before the second season came out and was hooked. I think the writers kinda figured out the show in the second half of season 1. It is probably my favorite active show going right now. Also cousin Gregg is extremely likable.
The way I understood it, she was discussing critical consensus. Thrones is nowhere near that level. Sopranos doesn’t even get a mention from her? Mad Men? Thrones isn’t on that level.
Someone on Reddit broke down the Rewatchables selections by year and by decade. 71 movies from pre-2000, 45 post-Millennium
Even with the awful awful ending, GOT still belongs in the conversation. JMO. I would still rank both those shows you listed ahead of it.
The ‘91 Bulls-Lakers talk was as good as it gets from Ryen with an E and Bill. Loved that discussion about one of my earliest sports memories.
That makes sense considering the ages of the people doing the Pods. Bill is 50, Sean is 38 I think and Chris early 40's. I wish they would have done more 80's movies to this point: Coming to America Ferris Bueller Back to the Future Goonies Teen Wolf Terminator Predator
I've always liked their NBA Draft stuff and O'Connor posted his top 30 yesterday. His list is really different from every other list I've seen, and I kind of like it. https://nbadraft.theringer.com/?_ga=2.52954090.358295201.1587052772-1366364830.1587052772
We've had plenty of Teen Wolf content from Bill. No thanks. More movies made this century, please. That they haven't done Catch Me If You Can is proof Bill has lost the plot of the podcast.
I am Legend was good then got bad and it ruined it because they didnt want to make will smith a bad guy
Strongly disagree. It has some major flaws (3rd act, monster effects), but overall it was very emotionally resonant, ambitious, and a great take on the one-man post apocalyptic scifi genre. It was also a box office success and generally received favorable reviews from critics.
What is everyone’s Top 7-10 from this century that they haven’t done ? Anchorman Catch Me If You Can Gladiator Almost Famous Casino Royale Dodgeball Talladega Nights Royal Tenenbaums
I think you’re compressing the degrees of gradation between absolutely terrible and totally perfect. I am Legend wasn’t a perfect movie by a long shot, but terrible movies don’t make the audience’s hairs stand up on end or bring them to the verge of tears in theaters. Just from the apocalyptic genre, Legion, End of Days, The Ninth Gate, etc... are terrible films. Flicks like I am Legend, Oblivion, orThe Book of Eli have redeeming qualities even if they aren’t to the level of a Snowpiercer, Blade Runner, orTerminator.
You didn’t get chills down your spine watching Neville wander through a deserted NYC or a lump in your throat when he lost Sam?
Yes, we all like dogs. The inclusion of the dog was a cheap and exploitive way to drag an emotional response out of suckers.
i do not remember having any physical and emotional response to that movie no, i dont care to argue it i just thought that was a goofy statement to make
