I doubt Ron will he fired mid season but he should be. Clean the staff out. Everything runs it’s course. Ron’s has had 8-9 years, and the greatest team in franchise history (for which I’ll never get over the hurt of not winning the super bowl), but the world keeps turning, and everybody runs out of ideas. i 100% play out Cams contract next year and probably float a 1-2 year extension in front of him this offseason. Luke is near the end of his prime. CMC takes 30 hits a game. A heathy Cam is a game changing weapon that gives you a great chance at 10+ wins and the playoffs. You try and get a great stretch out of him for another 1-2 years while you have other all nfl caliber players at key positions. The negative version of this argument is we damn sure don’t have a qb on the roster that’s winning an important game anyway. the Kyle Allen ship sinking like a rock with all the “Cam cares more about how he looks than how he plays, Kyle Allen just plays the game wink wink nod nod” crowd on board has been pretty enjoyable outside of the part where we were 4-2.
But you'll never get a healthy cam again. Not for a whole season, and an 8 win season is worthless. Cam needs to go and we need to get another top 5 draft pick qb before McCaffrey breaks down.
I understand the sentiment, and I guess I would say well you roll the dice with this core and hope you can get one more full 16 out of Cam and see what happens. I say that because the “get a top 5 qb” strategy isn’t happening this year when we win 6-7 games, so it’s another year, year 4 for CMC, average nfl player shelf life. Then you get the guy, but unless you get Trevor Lawrence by going 0-16 next year, who else out there gives you a chance to win his rookie year? That’s year 5 for CMC. Now it’s the qbs second year, maybe he’s pro bowl quality, maybe he’s Mitch Trubisky, CMC year 6 and pushing limits of reasonable expectation for CMC being a peak RB. 3 years since you gave up on Cam and one last run. IDK. Just thinking out loud.
I'd rather roll the dice on a qb than keep going with a broke down expensive cam newton. He was great, but I have no faith based on recent history that he can ever get back to that level of play. Lawrence would obviously be my choice but that doesn't mean there is another good option coming out in his year. I think this year you need to pick up OL in the draft and go for a qb next year.
fair enough. Not saying it’s a no brainer. There’s no doubt Cams time is short. I have little faith given recent and all history that we have a competent OL draft.
It's definitely not a no brainer. I get why you'd want Cam to stay on, it's just another version of rolling the dice that might have better odds for production in the short term. If we don't bolster the OL it won't matter either way
2011 - 17th in sacks allowed 2012 - 17th in sacks allowed 2013 - 16th in sacks allowed 2014 - 12th in sacks allowed Doesn’t matter how good the rushing attack was, we’ve had a hard time protecting the passer for a while now.
We definitely need OL help and have for a while, but Cam’s willingness to hold the ball and Schula’s love of 5 second routes played a role in those numbers too.
Don’t forget the NFL letting people head hunt reigning MVP Cam while diving in front of bullets for other qbs
Even with an average OL we still consistently had good years in the playoffs even though we had one good WR for what seemed like the majority of delhommes tenure. 2 when we had muhammed.
I mean it’s obviously going to be a disaster, but he seems to fit everything on Tepper’s wish list. Gonna be a lot of pissed off season ticket holders.
I've already started trying to talk myself into McCarthy. Hated it initially but I think I'd still rather have him than Kyle Shannahan's QB coach or whatever the dumbass trend was last year.
Thread dead af. Panthers twitter has been throwing a bitch fit for like 2 months straight. Am I the only one who doesn't think things are that bad? Kinda excited to see who we add tonight.
I don’t mind everything we did in free agency. The CMC deal isn’t nearly as bad as first reported. Same with Teddy B. Losing Cam broke my heart, but we all saw it coming. Would love to either land Simmons or trade back tonight.
The Ohio ST CB or one of the OTs seem to be the obvious choices. I agree that all is not as bad as it seems, with a decent OL I think we have an above average offense, and the front 7 still has a lot of talent.
Exactly how I feel. Like...parting ways with Cam sucks. I hope, in the long run, he can come back and retire a Panther. But there's a reason why nobody has picked him up. And it's gonna be hard to argue that Teddy isn't an improvement at this point.
We’ve been able to mend the fence with 89. Mending it with Cam down the road shouldn’t be nearly as tough. It sucks, but it didn’t make sense for either party to continue the relationship.
If Okudah drops, they should sprint to the digital podium. And I agree. Go defense heavy with a couple OL additions and this thing could be much better off than we thought a month ago.
