I didnt actually disagree with that part. There wasnt anything new in there for me. At the very least they could have gotten Billy Corgan on to tell the story about going to Vegas with Rodman twice in 24 hours during the finals that year lol It is funny how dyed hair and a few piercings and tattoos was viewed at the time also
He’s certainly not as interesting as the other NBA stars who cross-dressed, dated celebrities, headlined a WCW pay per view, and became friends with Kim Jong Un (RIP?) . Pretty run of the mill stuff. It’s not like he’s a Jayson Tatum or anything, did you know he’s only 19?
I was watching Face/Off (also from 1997) yesterday and daughter who is supposed to be this counterculture freak just looks like this.
I haven't listened to the pod so I can't speak to what he said there, but I kind of agree with him for the most part on the tweet. I was young at the time, but he kind of felt Kardashian famous to me. I'm sure there are wild stories and he did whatever he could to keep eyes on him, but at the end of the day it was just a side show for attention without a lot behind it, IMO. Some people love that shit and that's cool. I just never really got it.
Kardashian famous IMO would be if Dennis was a Lance Stephenson/Swaggy P type clown who never actually contributed to winning basketball in a meaningful way. The fact the sideshow was in full effect while being a key member of the best dynasty in NBA history qualifies as interesting in my book.
I can see that. If I can pull a Simmons here and compare him to wrestling... Rodman felt like that guy who had a unique gimmick that people bought and had fun matches, but then when he got on the mic to cut a promo he had nothing to say and there was nothing behind all of it. People were fascinated by him about his hair color and clothes and all that stuff, but the doc showed an interview with Barbara Walters (when that was a real thing that mattered) asking him about it and he was basically just "I like it". He's been like that for 25 years, really, and it just kind of felt hollow to me where I could never get into it. Other people did, and that's cool. If I was hearing more Vegas type stories all the time, my interest levels would have being raised.
So you’re saying Rodman is the Ultimate Warrior?? I think there’s a difference between “I was never a fan of the antics” or “I’m more interested in the on court part of sports” than saying flat out that he isn’t interesting. Rodman cross-dressing was more interesting than anything an NBA player has said since. Plus if a modern NBA player cross dressed he’d probably be treated like a saint by all the woke twitter bloggers and awarded an ESPY
i kind of both sides dog the rodman thing, i also think some of it is just rodman fatigue of over exposure vs him not being interesting.
I listened to the pod. Russillo was the one who talked a lot more about Rodman not being interesting. I didn't think Simmons said a whole lot about it. They both seemed to have a bigger issue with the idea of Rodman getting more credit in hindsight than he deserved because they didn't think he was that good in Chicago. I thought Russillo's take on the Pistons whining about a lack of love and the idea that everyone was against them because they had the audacity to win during the Bird, Magic and Jordan era was funny. The Bad Boys and Ryen Russillo seem to have a lot in common in that regard. Russillo was pissed because they didn't put his name on SVP's show for years when no one knew who he was. He almost left ESPN until SVP left radio so he could be by himself and get more credit. He left ESPN in part because they put a bigger name (Stephen A) on in his time slot.
haven't seen Simmons trending nationwide on Twitter for an awful take in a while, congrats to Bill. The best part is he basically co-opted an original take by Russillo and Ryen will get none of the blowback.
It was definitely Ryen’s take and Bill agreed with it. Ryen was surprised Bill did. Ryen’s take was he didn’t find out anything new they already didn’t know. He was hoping more details into some of the partying and antics would be revealed.
Also loved when Simmons was like "Rodman was the best on-ball defender I've ever seen" and immediately followed with "he's the only person I've ever seen slow down Larry Bird" and "no other forwards could guard Bird" when discussing a documentary predominantly about the actual most unguardable guy ever I wonder if he even realizes that he's doing it
I didn't mind that and understood where he was going with it. He was talking about the difference between Detroit/Chicago Rodman as far as defense, so at least it made sense in this scenario.
I haven't watched the doc yet nor listened to the pod but will drop in that Rodman is the most annoying person to run into in Newport. You instantly have to leave the bar/restaurant. He craves the attention of the entire place and is so loud and obnoxious.
Ryen had to be so pissed; he probably thought he had the ultimate contrarian’s take there and Bill was just like yeah me too.
Rodman is interesting, he just has nothing interesting to say. "People misunderstand me" "I don't care what people think" "I don't give a shit" is basically his entire thing. Him being supposed "friends" with Kim Jong Un is fascinating, except if anyone asks him to explain it, all he can say about it is "he's my friend".
yeah saying Rodman isn't interesting is like saying Belushi wasn't funny. He's not really a verbal guy and is obviously introverted to a degree, but he DID wild stuff. It's possible to be interesting in ways other than quotes
i read at some point that the blazers were vegas favorites over the lakers and bulls in 91 so that part probably wasn't accurate ultimately it doesn't really matter because they lost to the lakers in the wcf but i thought bill would have known that
Listening to Simmons and Russilo talk about anything for any period of time seems like my own personal hell. Props to you masochists that continue to do it
he wants equal props for becoming successful while being given every advantage from birth the fragile nature of the privileged is always great
I dont think he's saying he wants equal props. That was back in 2003 when he was only at Page 2 for a year or two.
Just gets tiresome seeing the same people insinuate everything acting like they are the smartest guys in the room. God forbid someone not hate Bill. Their problem not mine. Shit, I listen to less Bill than a lot on here who hate him.
