Dear Phillip, Please make you commitment public on May 5th. Preferably after 3:15pm. Thanks, Brian Kelly
Honestly I can't fault the staff for Shipley. If this pandemic never happens, I believe he comes to ND.
This one we needed a completely fair fight to be competitive with Clemson. Some of the others I question.
My cousin who lives in Cleveland was set to go to a school driving distance away. She got off the wait-list at UCLA on Thursday and committed there Friday without ever going to LA or the campus, knowing it's a 5 hour flight from home, without any COVID concerns, because that was the school she wanted to go to. He's going where he wanted to go. Can't fault the staff for trying, but it was kind of naive to think we were going to pull an elite talent from Clemson's backyard because he's well spoken and cares about academics, or whatever reasoning we had. He's going to the best situation for him, regardless of COVID.
Swarbrick had an interesting comment earlier around the pay for likeness stuff. Obviously wanted to pause but then something around being the QB for ND and the way ND is positioned could be pretty lucrative with TV and marketing. I’m still against it but I’d change my mind if it bought ND a natty.
yes my being against it is solely because I think it'll be just one more thing that the schools we already can't beat do better than us, but if ND is going to lean into it then hell yes lets ride.
It would cause even larger inequality in college sports based on the disparity of media coverage. And we’d be at a major advantage there if we took advantage of it. Narrator - “They didn’t take advantage of it”
Riley is a huge pick up for us...his film (against mulitple power 5 WRs in FL) looks really good and he has the size already (not tiny like Tariq Bracy)
Riley and Ryan Barnes (whom many think we lead for already) would be a fantastic CB duo - that's already an A in my book if they land those 2. If they get Ceyair Wright as well (still skeptical about this) then Mickens is an elite recruiter and talent identifier since he was the one who offered Riley and Barnes
Kizer and Coney cut by the Raiders. It'll be real nice when an ND QB again finds success in the NFL. What a drought.
i knew Kizer would be a bust...he couldn't even take care of himself going into the 2016 season, no way he was going to cut it in the NFL
A lot of big programs really don't have shit as far as recent success at QB. There are only 12-15 good qb's at any given time and for the last generation a good chunk of those are taken by Purdue Cal Miami University NC St. Etc Michigan didn't get anything more from Tom Brady than we got out of Brady Quinn.
I feel like there have been more ND LBs drafted in the last 5 years than the previous 15. That's a problem.
I agree with you but college and pros are a completely different thing. Vince Young and Cam Newton literally carried their teams to the title (Cam Newton was a really good pro QB too)
I was wondering today what RB plan B is and evidently it's go a the Stanford transfer and pass on one for this class.
I'll let you guess https://247sports.com/college/notre...-Running-Back-Like-Trevor-Speights-146828561/
so ND was totally caught off guard by Shipley going to another school, huh. I'm pretty much at the point where I don't trust this coaching staff's judgement on where they think they stand with top recruits.
putting all their eggs in one bag on a visit the weekend before covid caused to shut down was not great i think someone posted this but i am pretty sure kelly started the epidemic to walk back his talks of getting top 5 classes and actually having to recruit
I think the huge recruiting weekend would have made a difference in some recruits minds. COVID fucked it all up. Can’t fault the staff with that, but I do fault them for only recruiting one running back. That was just dumb from the get go
I don't really get this process. Didn't we know we were fucked 2-3 weeks ago when the rumors were he was going to commit in early May? Why didn't we start recruiting backups then. I haven't followed much of this, but if there was even a chance he wasn't going to end up at Clemson, why wouldn't he have said "Clemson is my heavy favorite and I see myself there, but we don't sign LOIs for eight months, so I'm going to find a time to get to ND's campus and check it out before I make things official"? It clearly sounds like he wants to go to Clemson and we would have had an uphill battle changing his mind if he's so definitive about it this early. He's not a borderline guy who had to hop to us or Clemson or risk losing his spots.
Part of the recruitment of Shipley was that he was the only back. That was part of the appeal. I dont hate it. Its May, its not like this carried all the way to December.
Yep, offers should have went out weeks ago when even all of us knew this was going downhill. Waiting until yesterday was very short-sighted, unless you’re betting Dabo leaves this year or something.
They need to be able to make Shipley feel like he's the only back while simultaneously recruiting three backup plans and making each of them feel like they are just as important. If they can't or won't do that then this is going to keep happening. And those backup plans are allowed to be highly rated players that other good teams actually want too... We don't always have to go straight from 5 star unicorn to Tony Jones.
they did the same with tyree and it paid off, but that is a seriously tight rope to walk every year. Nd turned down some damn good backs last year.
this isn’t true, ND had multiple other backs in play last year, ND never thought it was going to get Tyree until the end Taylor absolutely thought he would get Shipley
Maybe I read wrong but I saw that nd turned down a pretty good back last year to keep their pitch alive for tyree that he was the only back they needed. it seems really stupid, but they did the same this year so I am now kind of believing it
They did. The kid from New York was ready to commit but ND turned him away because Tyree wanted to be the only back in the class
They at least had offers out to other backs last year. Just didn’t make them commitable until Tyree decided.
Onye (DE) Committed https://247sports.com/college/notre...d-Jason-Onye-commits-to-Notre-Dame-145344211/
His tape is laughable. Just murdering children. Lot of tools there though. Looks to have a lot of Ade in him and that has turned out well.
Seems like they are moving towards DE with upside this cycle. No need for impact guys so find ones that grow into like you said with Ade.
I don't mean to suggest these aren't good commitments (although for the record, I'm skeptical the DB from Florida who committed without visiting is going to stick), but its definitely funny how they play games to get people to forget about Shipley.
