Madlib's brasil game is outrageous. Highly recommend the Brazilian beat konducta volumes NPR also just did a series of bits on sampling with Just Blaze, 9th, Salaam Remi, and Premo
Going back and listening to some classics that I’ve missed along the way for whatever reason. never really got into Mobb Deep and I guess beefs with Pac and Hov kind of kept me away from a lot of their music. Listened to The Infamous for the first time last week. 7/10 album imo. Super big highs and a few really mid tracks. Way too bloated now I’m on to the minstrel show
i love that album...... it’s a 8.5/10 for me that used to get me pumped before football games and Gravediggaz
I’m aware that my take on the infamous is fairly warm. I just feel like it’s got too many songs and that it gets kinda boring. It’s got some incredible tracks that are 10s but I think it drags some.
you started LB at the minstrel show? you gotta go from the jump (the listening) with them including mixtapes and justus league shit you’ll have days of shit to listen to
I’m definitely going back. I’ve just got a mental checklist of albums that I never really organically experienced. There aren’t many because I’ve normally stayed on top of things but there’s been points in my life where music was either more or less important and a few albums slipped through. One spin of TMS and I’m a big fan so I’ll definitely check out their catalog
think I posted this a while back but The Minstrel Show has aged really well. Just a really well crafted, listenable project. Hiding Place is another that's incredible. Aside from all the LB stuff, highly recommend checking out the first Foreign Exchange album, Connected if you haven't. Probably gave that the most burn in real time back in the mid 2000s. Had that as a driving soundtrack for a while and being from the Carolinas, it kind of came to be the feel/sound I associate with being on the interstate on a sunny day. Basically a Phonte solo album with guest spots from Justus League guys, Oddissee, Von Pea, Ken Starr, etc. over Nicolay hip-hop production. So good no rhyming but always thought this track was great
When Pooh shouts out Dilla at the beginning of Hiding Place :*( I wish there had been more rap foreign exchange projects. Phonte is a serviceable singer and certainly good enough on his hooks but I can't listen to him sing for a whole album, no matter how good Nic, Zo, Yazarrah, etc, are. "The Answer" was so hard.
yeah, I'm with you. The second FE album was about as far as I could go with Phonte singing that much and still be engaged throughout
Bro play the Murda Muzik LP...production is top notch. The Infamous is good too. Always loved the Mobb.
I just meant their style isn't for everyone. That's just music though. Your assessment wasn't really wrong, I just grew up listening to that CD over and over. Like I said, give Murda Muzik a try.
I will. I enjoyed the Prodigy solo album that dropped in the early 2000s and I’m a huge fan of that era of rappers/producers/style in general and I imagine if I caught TI naturally back then I’d look back on it fondly. If the album were 11/12 songs it’d be a classic for me just like it is everyone else
Went to stream it and realized it’s the one with quiet storm. I definitely like this album. Definitely like The Infamous as well. 7/10 is a solid score from me.
Yeah HNIC is still a classic to me. Like I said, I grew up on that stuff so I'm biased. Always liked Murda Muzik better than the The Infamous, but most people disagree with me...it's all subjective anyways.
What’s you guy’s opinion on the Madgibbs projects? Pinata/Bandanna I love them both but for different reasons. It feels to me that Madlib on pinata might have underrated Gibbs talent and was little more boombastic wrt his beats and that made for a more profound experience on the production side. On Bandanna, feels like the beats are more subdued and it allows Freddie to shine more. I think that speaks to Madlibs brilliance because the production is no less impressive but it lays the table better for Gibbs to get busy. either way they are a phenomenal team Freddie’s voice and delivery lends itself so well to Madlibs soul samples it’s just such a brilliant match
Waiting for the lord to rise I looked into my daughters eyes And realize, ima learn through her The messiah, might even return through her If ima do it, ima change the world through her Shit hits, man
the food was a thousand times better on Chappelle's show than on that album, which btw, was one of his WEAKEST @ ME MOTHERFUCKERS. "Be" is one of commons worst songs. It's Your World was the best song, shoulda had Dilla do the rest of it.
I think Gibbs (much like push) is in a weird lane. His appeal is more fine tuned for the coke raps of the mid 90s early 2000s and my assumption is that hip hop fans of that era mostly have matured past that. Personally, I find nostalgia in his bars and I generally relate to it a bit going back to a time in my life. not saying this applies to you but the primary complaint I see with Gibbs and Push are “all they talk about is dealing drugs”
I mean the subject matter isn't my favorite but it isn't like I don't listen to coke raps. Voice/delivery is more of an issue for me I think
Aye. I quite enjoy him. He’s got a soulful delivery and quite a lot of talent and a penchant for one liners. I understand the voice thing to an extent. Outside of Chicago it’s always been kind of strange to hear midwestern rappers voices
That's the other thing that's weird because I am big on Detroit (duh) and I like some Chicago weirdos so it shouldn't be that off-putting for me at all.
I guess I should’ve included Detroit in that mix as well (although Detroit has a much more eclectic sound). Chicago guys sounds like Chicago, Detroit guys sounds like Detroit. Imo when you get away from those scenes (Cleveland, KC, Indiana etc) voices start to sound weird
After digging into Little Brother I have decided without question that North Carolina is the hardest sound to pin down
was the chapelle show version not on the original album? It’s currently the version featured on Apple Music
not on the physical version (that was a thing 15 years ago), but after hearing the response to how much better the chappelle version was they subbed it in on the digital version
Daytona is an amazing album imo and he’s got two classics with malice. He’s currently in the lab with Madlib so he’s coming
