I like living in Oregon and there are things about the U.S. that I like, but the idea of loving a country has seemed uncomfortable to me pretty much since I started to become politically aware and whatnot. Love for something like a nation fosters the will to change it for the better. You don’t have to (and probably shouldn’t) be proud of America in its totality at this moment in time. I would hope that your love for the country exists to the degree where you want to make it a better place for the generations that will follow, and one day we can provide more than lip service to the ideals we espouse for this nation.
Also doesn’t help that the concepts and symbols of patriotism have been hijacked by the people who represent the worst of what this country has to offer. But yeah, if America is part of the family, right now it’s the methhead uncle that goes on two-week benders and is often found face first in a drainage ditch.
