This market right now is insane. I’ve sold $700 worth of what I would consider mainly crap in the last month. Just stuff I found going through boxes. From the time I found the cards a month or two ago to now prices have increased 3-5x.
One of these weekends if I have some free time, I'm going to try and run a <$1 stack sale where folks can just claim bundles of cards. Seems like a good way to get rid of a bunch of cards and make a little back in return. Also, I had my first <12 hr workday in about a week yesterday so I stupidly convinced myself to buy a second box of Chrome. Wish I hadn't.
Chrome cards are nice, but at the checklist it has and the limited number of cards per pack, you arent getting your money back most of the time.
Also me finding out there is a card show a quarter mile from my house every Wednesday hasnt helped my spending on cards. I basically buy a blaster a week there. There is a guy who always has blasters and they are only slightly marked up. I grabbed another bowman blaster today and a chrome blaster. Continued my color streak in Bowman, pulled a /99 Green chrome of Jerar Encarnacion. Wish I was pulling better names, but complain. Chrome blaster was pretty ok. No Robert or Lux, but had a Yordan base, Yordan insert and a Dustin May in the Sepia pack.
So when you say slight markup what you talking? Any chance if it’s a price I like I could get you to snag me some chrome blasters next week?
I know it’s more than a mark up but I’ve been buying blasters off eBay for $30. Most guys are willing to negotiate. I would like to get more around the 26-27 range but I don’t think that’s going to happen. I’ve ripped 4 blasters so far and one Robert base, a bunch of Yordan and a lux. Nothing to great for color yet. I have 6 more blasters coming and 10 cello packs. Hoping to hit something in those.
Chrome were $25 / blaster box. $15 / hanger box I think. He was selling Topps series 2 blasters at $20 a box last few weeks which isn't even a mark up, so not sure how he made money on those. He had jumbo boxes for $400, but I think that's eBay price
Just checked Blowout and Mosaic Football Hobby Box preorder is $800, Choice is $700, and No Huddle is $600. Ridiculous.
Yeah they got me all excited when I got the email it was back in stock, then I saw the price tag and just laughed. I got one hobby box pre ordered all ready and looks like I should have no problem selling it around 700
Seems very likely today’s cards will be a terrible investment. There are so many out there right now the supply is over saturated. Everyone is ripping packs. Early Lebron will probably still increase since they’re much rarer.
Don’t have them in hand yet but just saw the grades.... 2018 Lamar Jackson Disco Prizm BGS 9.5 true gem 2020 Panini Draft Picks Joe Burrow Red and Black Snake Skin Prizm BGS 10 2019 Prizm Silver Ja Morant BGS 9 If I were to sell, first two should be big profit compared to what I paid and even the third I should make $
9s are up over $800 now so I feel comfortable saying you'll make a decent buck if you decide to sell it now. Morant's hobby has taken off since the restart and he has just about hit the level Zion is currently at. The hobby is so fickle right now. Anybody that has a big game sees their stuff increase overnight because new money flocks to whoever has 1 good game. It is bizarre. I truly think Zion's stuff went down because he didn't tear it up in 20 mpg so people went to buy MPJ, Gary Trent, Cam Johnson, Bol Bol, etc. Invest in role players I guess?
Such a wild and strange market. The Ja was actually a PSA 9 I cracked open thinking it would be a BGS 9.5. So got burned there but paid $400 ish for it so should still be up as long as his prices don’t tank when they are bounced. Also the Lamar Disco was a SGC 9.5 (paid around $385) that I cracked so that one worked out big time
So, IYO's, should I grade Gavin Lux and Kyle Lewis refractors? I'm not going to send in right now, but more curious if that level of card is even worth grading
I'm just buying singles now unless I find a hobby box I really want to open. Sucks but I really can't afford to pay $250+ per hobby box. Really not looking forward to what Prizm footballifootball going to be priced at. I did send off a group of 8 cards to PSA to get graded so I'm looking forward to getting that back in a few months.
They're right on that fringe of whether I'd send them. If you don't mind them both coming back as a 9 then send away. If you need them to be 10s I'd look them over real closely and if you see no flaws then send away. With those $30ish and below cards, I'm now setting them aside in a box and if that player sees their hobby take a spike into that $50+ range then I'll send in a bulk.
Makes sense. Also, on a random aside. I think I mentioned it but I'm going to start trying to get the Topps Chrome auto rainbow with Josh Staumont. Got his purple the other day for 10, got the blue the other night for like 18, and was able to get the gold this morning for $30. Was pretty excited the offer got accepted.
holy shit, it's ridiculous what basketball packs/boxes are going for on ebay right now. went to my LCS today for the first time in a while and all he had was Hoops for $8 a pack. He said he either couldn't get, or couldn't afford to get anything else right now.
Chronicles boxes are $20 blaster and I think $40 mega box in retail store. Last I saw they were going for $125/$280ish on ebay
I was today years old when I figured out blue wave and blue have different print numbers in Topps Chrome.
How many different products are going to have a Zion auto rookie this year? Every damn product Panini comes out with has one and they keep coming out with more. Seems like there is a ton of money to be made with buying raw cards where a mint gets you 2-4x and a gem my gets you 5-10x. But none of that is with the new stuff, all older cards. I’d suspect football is about to explode even more so similar to nba with the season coming up.
Panini has so many releases that we are going to end up in a new junk wax era just because everyone is going to have a million rookie cards again
I was bored yesterday and wanted to buy a box to try to find a Zion or a Ja rookie yesterday but I don’t even know what to buy. I haven’t bought any cards since the Upper Deck / Fleer / Topps early 90s so what should I look for?
Stay away from basketball, I just got back in to the hobby this past winter and that’s one of the quickest things I learned, stay away from basketball. The price to buy a box to rip doesn’t pay off 95% of the time. I’ve gotten lucky and bought a mega box and hit three zions and a Ja. Then another time I spent $100 on packs to rip and came away with at most $15 worth of cards. But singles man, I get the need to rip but not at this price.
If you can find boxes in stores it's ok, but good luck because people buy them as soon as they hit shelves and resell them for profit on eBay. I check my grocery store or target every time I go shopping and have only seen basketball cards once and i think I got there just after it was stocked and five people came in behind me together and grabbed the rest of the boxes.
This is why I stopped buying PSA 10s. People are paying 4-5x for these modern cards that are gimme 9s (as long as they're centered). Instead of buying two PSA 10s, I'll buy 10 raw, grade them out, and very likely end up with 3-5 10s. The problem with older cards is that the older the card, the more hands it has been through. I recently started buying a lot of Dwyane Wade rookies. I bought 15-20 Topps Flagship rookies and the best I came across is probably an 8. It is near impossible to find one in good condition.
This may not be the case for D wade but I find a lot of early Lebron 8’s will sell more than raw as well depending on the card. There are so many fakes out there People will pay a premium just having the peace of mind it’s authentic.
So asking for opinions/ideas here Been making an fsu collection the past few years or so, and am working on an idea based on this poster I'm gathering autographed cards of each player listed here, and am going to make like a bigger framed creation, maybe arranging the cards in like an offensive formation and defensive formation above and below. I've got an auto card of each player in an fsu uniform except Bobby Hart and Terrence Brooks. I've got base cards of the two, but just seeing if the more experienced guys here had an idea of where I could look to see if they even made any for these guys... Only place I've looked is eBay. Thanks fellas
Looks like Bobby Hart doesn't have any auto cards beside giveaways they gave out at the UA game when he was in HS. Looks like Brooks has two rookie autos. This site is a great tool for checklists and stuff https://www.tcdb.com/Person.cfm/pid...oks?sTeam=&sCardNum=&sNote=&sSetName=&sBrand=
The thing I like about Baseball and Hockey is there is a defined go to rookie card for each player that you want. I'm not sure basketball and football have that. In hockey you want the Young Guns rookie card, and baseball you want the players 1st Bowman card. Of course Bowman has variations and autos and stuff, but at least it's the same set. Topps rookies are good too, but secondary to Bowman. With so many Panini releases, what is the go to NBA rookie card? And switching who has rights makes it harder too. It was fun making a Bowman 1st collection of all Tigers first round picks, it goes back 30 years. Same with Young Guns for hockey.
Just to highlight the craziness of the number of different sets and variations Panini does for basketball and football. Guess how many different cards (including different variations) Zion Williamson, Luis Robert, Jack Hughes and Joe Burrow have? And that isnt even fair because Robert has had cards since 2017 and most NFL releases still havent come out, Ill throw in Jasson to compare someone in their first year of cards and Kyler Murray for a NFL player who has gone through a year. Answers in spoiler Spoiler: Answer Kyler Murray - 3,114 Zion Williamson - 1,796 Luis Robert - 1,342 (roughly 600 were prior to this seasons release) Joe Burrow - 1,180 Jack Hughes - 502 Jasson Dominguez - 293
Football - National Treasures, Contenders, Prizm, Optic, Select Baseball - 1st bowman, Topps Chrome, Topps Flagship Basketball - National Treasures, Prizm, Optic, Select There are obviously a ton more cool sets to collect but those are typically the most desirable across the 3 major sports. I don't know enough about hockey to give an opinion.
