I had to go to Fargo for work once. They had a restaurant with many exotic sausages and some solid breweries. I don’t know any reason I’d ever go back though.

I would go a little later in the season but it completely depends on what you’re wanting to do there.

I'm not much of a luxury accomodations type guy but any place called "The Swag" is going to be a definite no for me. I'm similarly biased against places called The ____ at _____

I live near Blackberry Farm. I've been through the property, never stayed or eaten there.
I know several people who have worked there. They churn through college kids because the hours suck and often the guests suck as well, but the tips are pretty great.
I had one buddy who was a fly fishing guide for them, he took out Brett Favre and Tiger Woods, and some country music people who are probably really famous but I don't know. He wasn't supposed to tell me that.
It's over the top nice, but also over the top expensive.
I had a boss in college who loved the restaurant.
I have a cousin who works at their brewery. They supposedly make pretty good beer.
They have a new property, Blackberry Mountain, that seems more appealing to me. It's more focused on paying too much money to do fun things in the mountains. As opposed to paying too much money to sit around at a spa or on a porch looking at the mountains.

Now I apologize for using that many words and not providing much help.

Sounds like Blackberry Mountain is the way to go. Getting married soon, and saving the honeymoon for after the pandemic, so wanted to do a little local minimoon thing for now. Blackberry sounds the best to me because fly fishing and food.

I was just at the Cloister - extremely nice resort and great golf course.

Downside - there were an absurd amount of kids there.

    SNOW

Honestly that's all I know right now. Still researching options all around. I'm south Florida guy born and raised and haven't seen snow in many years. I went skiing 20+ years ago and had a blast, but now I just want to start some annual vacations for my kids, experience new stuff, build memories. It doesn't have to be an epic 2 week ski every day in perfect white powder vacation and I can't afford that anyway. That's what my sister&bro-in-law family have done multiple times going to Steamboat Springs, CO and Park City, UT.

    - sledding
    - tubing
    - building a snowman
    - making snow angels
    - snowball fights
    - sitting by fireplace
    - maybe maybe a beginner ski lesson for 2 kids & gf & me but probably not even interested in that right now, maybe future vacay.
    - staying in a decent place like a suite with 2 bedrooms so a lil privacy, and a kitchen, a place where we can make our own breakfast and dinners.
    - buy lunch when out, eat dinner at restaurant 2-3 times while we're there, other than that make our own basic stuff.

Wife's sister has a house in South Tahoe right next to the municipal golf course. They're a serious skiing family, and their place is several blocks from the gondola up to Heavenly. They've found that the last ten years have been feast or famine when it comes to snowfall up there, and often there's no snow at lake level even if the ski resorts are open (and during the drought it wasn't worth getting season ski passes). This is supposed to be a la nina year, which suggests lower-than-normal rain and snowfall for CA and the Sierras. If you want to be certain of having a snow experience, you may want to look elsewhere. If you're OK with staying where there isn't snow but still being able to get up to ski resorts with snow, then Tahoe would be good (and the lake is always spectacular), but I'd maybe push it to later January to early February

Not sure the age of the kids - but they have classes, etc. for almost any age - enables the parents to do what they want for the day.

Pretty much a daycare situation but the kids get to learn the basics of skiing/snowboarding.

Planning to work remotely in Turks and Caicos for the month of November. I searched the thread but didn't really find much about it, aside from the international airport being complete shit. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? The GF is currently reading the Fromers book so I assume that will have some good information but why trust a random person (or people) who right a book vs. a random group of people on the internet?

Not bad right now,as long as no new fires start up you should be fine with at most some haze and AQI under 100.

That said winds and such can change at any time...

Since Pebble beach has to do outdoor dining only right now you get to have lunch/dinner pretty much on the first fairway which was really wild.

Deer just walk up to the tables and obviously the course is ridiculous. I didn't even play it I just got a golf cart and we drove the course.

Didn’t know you could get a cart just to cruise. I’d plan on playing Pebble and possibly Spyglass but also thinking about hitting up Pasatiempo. We don’t have many other plans, just there to hang out for the week that would have been our honeymoon

The marine layer can get pretty thick in the mornings. Faugust turns into a pretty nice and clear Sept/Oct Indian summer tho

Dunno if you remember the twin smokestacks of the power plant at Moss Landing halfway up the Monterey Bay coastline, but wife and I have kayaked there four times in the last month

A few pics from a trip to Alaska.

Here is an unmodified image from my camera of the Northern Lights from Talkeetna, AK. As someone who is interested in N.L/A.B., but knows pretty much nothing, I learned they have an index for A.B. activity, numbering 1-9. This night was a 4 on that scale, and was a peak moment from that night, taken at something like 2:30am local time. Special memory.

tjosu - we were heading all the way north so this could potentially make zero sense for your trip.

But we rented a houseboat instead of a hotel in Sausalito (SF bay) and it was awesome. Was like fraternity row of tech people and random houseboat lifers.

One of the more ridiculous experiences of the trip.

Flights booked to SFO. We’re planning on staying several days in Monterey but then undecided on the last few days. I’ve never been to SF but is it worth it to stay in town right now? Looked at Santa Cruz some briefly as well but I know nothing about the area so not sure what would be best yet

I did a trip similar to this last year. Stayed in Carmel then drove up to SF. Santa Cruz was cool, and loved the beaches right north of there in Davenport which isnt relevant to your trip.

As a longtime Santa Cruz County resident I would think that if you're spending several days in Carmel/Monterey, a visit to Santa Cruz would probably feel like much of the same but maybe not quite as nice. Two things that bring people to the area, the Boardwalk and Cowell Redwoods, are either shut down because of covid (Boardwalk) or burned out from the fires (Cowell). You can still go to the Boardwalk and hang out, but the vibe isn't there since the rides are closed. Capitola Village is cute, but if you've been to Carmel's Ocean Avenue you've seen the better of the two trendy seaside villages. We probably have better beaches if that's what you're into
