how does that help specific breeds? I assume you adopt mixed breed dogs.

I may have misunderstood your original reply.

My last couple adoptions have been pure bred dogs.

My bad. Most of the times I hear people say adopt they mean “adopt a mixed breed”. I’d definitely be willing to adopt a bully.

Starting to think about getting a dog, I feel like a rescue dog could be a good idea. I feel up to the challenge.

i just need to get over losing my buddy before, I don’t want another dog just to make up for not having spock anymore. It’s a weird feeling, I want a dog but i will probably expect the dog to be like my old buddy and that seems unhealthy.

Get some flea and tick pills. You can order it online and your vet should sign off quickly if you see them annually.

Got an over the counter type topical treatment but he’s due to his annual vet visit, so I might ask for some kind of prescription pill/chewable for him when we go

So I'm getting married next weekend and was planning to go to the beach for a few days afterward. I had my 10.5-month-old golden retriever set to go to a Rover sitter for seven nights.

Then she goes into her first heat today and the Rover can't do it anymore.

I fucking knew this would happen.

Calling my vet tomorrow, but do vets even board dogs in heat?

Any of you have a toy that will allow our dog to play tug of war by herself?

There are lots of options on Amazon but they all look a little sketchy because its the same toy posted 100s of times under different names. Our local pet store didn't have anything and I need something that will hopefully stick well enough for a 40 pound dog to pull on it and it stays in place.

Ugh, my dog had a mild CCL tear that is being treated by bed rest and rehab and she was doing fine. She was allowed to go on 5 minute walks now , but when my wife let her out to get her on her walk, she let her outside before putting her in her harness and my dog saw a squirrel and bolted after it. She now won't put any pressure at all on that leg and I fear she fully tore it. Our vet has no appointments for over a month and person we are doing rehab with doesn't have another appointment with her for a couple weeks. I dont know if I should bring her to an emergency vet now or just keep her on bed rest until we get to her next appointment

We had a dog that tore both CCLs. On the first one we did the full surgery. On the second one we just let it ride. To be honest by the time they both “healed” it was exactly the same.

edit: to add, we weren’t monsters and didn’t want to pay for the second one but she was older then and had come down with cushings disease and were advised she shouldn’t be put under.

Anyone have advice on heavy duty dog crates? I think it's really important that my new rescue Freddie be crate trained and I feel like I've been doing a good job as far as getting him comfortable with the crate. For example I put his food bowl in there and, while he doesn't love that, he goes in and eats. I've closed him in it and pet on him and he seemed calm. But the one time I left him in there for an extended period (like 1.5 hours) I got home and he had bent the metal with his jaws trying to escape. I felt terrible and am just really glad he didn't hurt himself. So I guess the next step is to buy a heavy duty crate and try again? But even with that I worry he'll hurt himself. Any thoughts?

Here is Freddie being a sweet boy. He is wearing a t-shirt because he was/is recovering from a gun shot wound. Thankfully the wound is getting better every day and he's not in any pain :-)

Just my monthly reminder to hug your dog and make her/him feel good.

i miss my spock so much still, the walks, feeding him. Sleeping and giving him affection during the night so he felt completely comfortable.

not ready yet to get another one but there is no way I am not getting a dog in the next five years

Backstory, Bonnie is a pound pup I got 6 years ago.

Took Bonnie for her annual check up today and boy did I get a surprise at the end. Things were going great and the vet said as we were leaving, “let’s make sure her microchip works.” Microchip worked...different number. Tried again the same different number. Scanned the other side, her number.

Sooooo yeah, two microchips. the vet looked at me and said I’m going ignore that. She’s your dog and she’s very well taken care of. The vet gave me the other microchip number for my records.

Curiosity got me so I called Called home again, the chip service, and they said yeah that’s definitely someone’s name associated with that chip. We need to get it transferred to you.

“Yeahhhhh ma’am I’m going to hang up the phone now.”

So the thing I’m worried about now is if she went missing and she lost her collar that has her name, my phone number, and her home again number on it and someone took her to the vet to scan for a chip it’s a 50/50 shot my number comes up.

I don’t know if she was turned in by the previous owner or if was a runaway lost dog. I’ve always assumed she was a runaway based on her proclivity to chase squirrels, rabbits, ducks etc.

    Let’s run thru this exercise:

Hey Fire Jimbob this is home again and we have someone who has had your dog for 6 years now and we need you to transfer the chip you put in your dog to user LeVar Burton

    What would you say?

I don't have a crate suggestion but our last dog (pitbull) did the same thing. Messed up her teeth. One night we came home and the crate door was still shut/locked and she had gotten out. She had squeezed her 40-50 body through the opening was was obviously pretty dangerous. Then we started zip tying her in and then she somehow flipped the crate on the side while she was inside.

We realized that crate training was not meant to be and then worked on having the same routine when we left the house. Which resulted in her getting a peanut butter kong every single time we left the house for the next 9 years. Lots of peanut butters, lots of eaten of eaten stuff but after a few months, she learned she could sit by the window and watch for us and that help her anxiety. Again, not the story you want but just more of a background story that switching from the metal crate to something more heavy duty is a good move to avoid the above example.

My buddy died today. Pretty big shock as he was seemingly in perfect health, let him out to use the bathroom like normal this morning and went to let him back in a few minutes later and he was laying dead in the yard. Dobermans apparently have a fairly common heart defect which can cause sudden death with no symptoms or other warning signs. Needless to say we are pretty broken up. Love on your good boys and girls a little extra whenever you get the chance, never know how much time you have.

Had to take Flash to the vet. She sleeps in my youngest daughter’s bedroom and my daughter noticed some blood by Flash’s bed so we thought she threw up blood. While getting ready to take her to the vet we noticed blood droplets so we checked her couldn’t find were she was bleeding from. Finally found it and took her to the vet. Luckily they didn’t seem to worried and asked me if I wanted to have her seen as a walk-in. Wait is 3 hours so they told me I could leave her there because of her history of seizures. Hoping she just scraped herself on something. At least it wasn’t her throwing up blood. Was a real roller coaster of emotions. She is only 4 but I worry howl much longer we will have the pleasure of having her in our lives. I always take my higher spirit that Groot (knock on wood) has been healthy.

So this guy in our neighborhood has two pits and a young German Shepard. They are constantly getting out, like multiple times a week. Sweetest dogs, I've caught them a couple times and held them in my backyard until he could come get them (this was a month or more ago) and they continued to get out constantly. All 3 got out on Wed this week and my neighbor saw the owner walking down the street looking for them. She told him he needed to repair his fence or something because something was gonna happen to the dogs. The German Shepard got out and hit and killed yesterday :tebow: apparently one of the pits is limping too.
I wanna kill that dude. Me and one neighbor have said if they get out again and we catch them we are turning them in to a rescue. One neighbor is gonna call animal control to do a welfare check on them on Monday. I'm so pissed off at this random stranger.

So Flash has some sort of puncture and an infection. They have me the option of surgery or less invasive. Went less invasive I am afraid to have her go under with her seizure history we are afraid she won’t wake up. Now all I can hope is the antibiotics and keeping it clean will do the trick.

I'm confused, you are pissed at the dog owner because he won't control them or you think a random neighbor hurt the dogs that are getting out?

The owner because the dogs have been getting out multiple times a week for months now and despite everyone in the neighborhood always being on the lookout for them and helping catch them to get them back, he still never did anything about stopping them from getting out. And now one of them is dead and apparently another one is hurt.

I see where the confusion could come from in my initial post. My next door neighbor saw him walking down the street looking for them Wed and said he needed to stop them from getting out because she was worried something was going to happen to the dogs, like what happened last night. We live near some pretty busy streets.
